Yes everyone has a responsibility to ensure that they are safe. Are kids today much different to when I was a teenager over 45 years ago.. No. What is different is our attitudes and those of society in general. Yes we are all individuals, but we are supposed to be a society. A society has collective values, usually that which is acceptable to all. Of course when I say all, I am a scientist so I think like one. There is a limit to all. If say a thousand people wanted something changed, then we can say it's negligible in the big scheme of things. But as an enlightened people, we should be able to compromise, both sides. When we just totally block out reason however, issue becomes viral, and usually reason ,the thing that makes peace possible goes out the window. Now I don't think that the behaviour of these young woman is right, but I believe that they have the right to do it. This opens up things for predators, so we need as a society to be critical of the predators, not keep excusing them by blaming the victim. The direction we are heading though is to blame the victim. Disloyalty and distrust are being promoted by government and business. These are supposed to be the leaders of our society the proper function of which is to everyones long term benefit. Short term however the opposite is true, and our whole problem, our problems with the economy ,welfare, foreign policy, social justice and attitudes and behaviour, all boils down to only having a short term view.
As I said, male violence etc is a separate conversation. And one which would go without saying if it didn't need to be said ... again and again). What we do about them has nothing whatsoever to do with women taking personal responsibility for their own safety. Pretending that there is no fault on the part of the women who take these insane risks, is the ultimate hubris. Saying they're doing it because they should be able to, is like going to a war zone for your next holiday because wars should not exist. We know wars and rapists exist, but we're a long way off stopping either. UNTIL that happens, it's on us as individuals to remain safe. While we're doing so, we can raise sons who don't rape or kill, and daughters who avoid dangerous situations. A win/win for all.
Can you explain why his saying that is an issue? Seriously, I want to know. If you ARE condemning it - you have evidently never spent much time around groups of females discussing their conquests' appendages/virginity/skill/lack of skill, etc etc etc.
i suppose I say it because it disgusts me. He was big noting himself about taking advantage of a drunk girl. She wasn't someone who lost her nerve after the event. She had been stupid, but that didn't entitle someone to have sex with her against her will. I've spoken to rape victims who say that they became mute and submitted because they were unable to fight back. I must confess that I've never talked about having virgin lovers, how small they are or what duds they are in the sack, with my friends.
We have to admit that the snowflake generations have a different way of thinking and communicating with each other than previous generations. Everyone is entitled to make their own mistakes, but we shouldn’t be automatically saying someone is a victim when they make a foolish mistake they could have avoided by taking personal responsibility for themselves. I don’t believe society or the community should be forced into parenting other adults, and its about time adults were held responsibility and accountability for their own adult actions. The worse thing we can do as a society is facilitate someone’s stupid behaviour and call them a victim. Why don’t we call it out for what it really is - stupid behaviour that adults should not be doing. People have been taught "stranger danger" and "drink spiking" in schools now since the early 1980's, so there is no excuse for stupid behaviour. We all know that the majority of smart kids will survive, but the majority of dumb kids get lost along the way. So why are we now trying to pretend these stupid kids are more than the victims of their own own stupid mistakes? This is a warning for everyone not to go out drunk off your face to a nightclub cruising for sex, and then cry rape, because you feel embarrassed and humiliated by allowing someone to root you up the brown-eye. Hopefully this is a lesson learned.
These types of men have deep issues, someone who is normal in the head who saw a woman in that state would protect her ,call her a cab, or ambulance, depending on her condition .Taking advantage of her, is the act of a scumbag, thinking she asked for it is just justifying what you know is wrong. If you have so little self esteem that you need to brag about it then that just makes you all the sadder. There are however sadder people, those who justify and defend them .
When are you guys going to start speaking English. I play with some Aussies and a Kiwi or two online and no one can understand a word you say. We have Germans and Asians who speak better English. LOL
The history of English is fascinating. It's not really English, it started in Holland. At the time, Holland was the centre of trade, it's harbours full of ships from the four corners of the known world. A language developed among the sailors and warfies. A mixture of many languages, often having two words for the same meaning or the same words with different ones. Ill and sick, and a light light was carried by knights as they rode down the road at night. This language spread among the commoners and warfies whereever ships went. This language spread among the commoners of England since everything revolved around the warves. How it went from this to becoming one of the most studied languages in the world is fascinating, look it up. What began as common language spoken by sailors and warfies ,would become a language where people get PhDs studying it's complex Gramma.
Au contraire. Take it back to the removal of noun gender, case agreement and the all important preposition. So the Danish Man and the Saxon Woman live on the farm in Britain. Their nouns and verbs are pretty similar but their grammar messes up comunication. So drop the superfluous grammar. Simplify plurals by just adding "S". Then the Norman French come in and double the vocabulary so we got the Germanic word, cow and the Latin word, beef. etc. But, by the grandchildren of the Norman conquest, the kids had to learn French as a Foreign Language. Their textbooks exist today. A fascinating part of English is its' growth by popular use. Like "d'oh" is now in the dictionary. I find the idea of "language academies" dictating the use of a language as not good. Remember the French Academy war on Franglais and words like "le parking lot". Yes to the Dutch who were usually close partners with Britain except when they weren't. They may have helped English with use but, did not really contribute to the evolution of English. I liked "The Story of English". Especially Episode 1. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Story_of_English You don't have to buy the dvd's or subscribe to them or whatever http://documentaries-plus.blogspot.com/2010/09/story-of-english.html Aussie English, the product of language isolation and atavistic tendencies. Moi Is an English speaking country? No! Unless you consider equally with French English speaking, eh.
Ah English, or as some of my student clients like to say, "bloody English!" A confounding language. I'm glad I was born to it because I wouldn't have the wit to learn it as an adult.
It'd be a terrible language if you had to learn another type of alphabet too. Comparable to an English speaker having to learn a Hebrew or Arabic alphabet.
Consider, historically, persons whose native language is English are the worst at learning foreign languages. My father could speak 5 languages fluently and was a language purest. Everything must be correct. No accents. But, English was not his first language. French and Dutch colonials and explorers seem more adept at learning the languages of natives they encountered. Maybe the lack of cases, gender, and grammatical agreement for adjectives, etc. wires the English speakers brain in such a manner to make foreign languages more difficult to learn. That's my excuse.
Yes, even as an alphabetic language it's difficult. Some of my Chinese speaking clients point out how pictograms work, it's very interesting. Meanwhile they're dealing with there, their, they're and tough, slough, trough, plough
I believe pictograms can communicate across different languages, true? Like a Vietnamese or Japanese could read a Chinese or Korean but, in their own language. I mean the pictograph for "sun" is the same of similar enough for such communication. Anyone know the truthiness of that? Will Australia adopt pictograph written communication? The are so near Asian and getting more Asian all the time Australia, you missed your chance to create a real Australia with less globalism and more internalism. Now you are on the west's economic treadmill and there is no getting off, although some fall out, like the middle middle class. So Sad. Would you like more sushi?
Do Aussie's agree with this written by an Aussie. The Aussie's ID is hidden to protect whatever Regarding the Trader Joe's manager killed by a police bullet. http://politicalforum.com/index.php?threads/police-bullet-killed-trader-joes-manager.538161/ I find that situation totally amazing. No liability? None at all? That is amazing. In Australia, for example, a police officer has no more right than a member of the public in these circumstances. Cops can be charged with murder or manslaughter and have no special defence. They are also individually liable for damages as a result of a tort committed by them where their actions fall outside common or statutory law. Trust me, it's in the back of your mind all the time and it does help moderate cop behaviour.
Sure, it disgusts all of us sane and civilised folk. But what does it have to do with women taking responsibility for their own safety? PS I have also never discussed private matters in such detail, but I sure knew women who did - back in the crazy days! They were more than happy to talk about men as though they (men) were brain-dead pieces of meat. MORE than happy. And I'm talking about educated, intelligent women .. not trashy types.
You're stating the bleeding obvious. While it needs saying, it's a TOTALLY SEPARATE conversation to that on personal safety, and if you keep saying it to drown out the equally important message that women need to be responsible for their own safety, then half the picture goes missing. Then you have girls entering adulthood with the message that since they have a right to walk alone at night, they WILL walk alone at night. No one here is defending scummy men, don't be ridiculous.
