NYC is rather liberals and remains the greatest city in the world.

Anyone who thinks it is a shithole must have their brains up their butts.

New York City has had it's repeated ups and downs over the past 150 or more years. It's up for a while and then down for a while.Like 99.9% of our country right now, it is in dire need of major infrastructure modernization, including the public transportation.

As someone who has been spending time in New York City since the mid '70s, I can relate my experiences there. It is truly a great American City where anything is possible for people who don't mind the fast pace and crowded streets. If you can't figure out a way to make a buck and have a great time there, you are an imbecile in my book.I love it there and always have but I am a Californian and can only take it for a week or two at a time now. Manhattan has become much safer and more liveable since I first visited and later lived there for a while.

There will always be people who will whine and complain complain and no matter what is going on. They are just miserable crybabies. We have several of these types here on PF. I also feel the same way about San Francisco where I have also spent a lot of time and know my way around. I have lived mostly in LA for the past 54 years and to me it is definitely the greatest city in America.

What I can not understand is why there are so many negative detrimental people in general living in our country. Our politicians from both sides of the aisle, with few exceptions have generally been a bunch of duplicitous dishonest scumbags as long as I can remember and have gotten progressively worse, but our country and it's people have continued to build a great place to live, work and play. I find politics today to be a circus of the absurd, especially with the clown show going on now. But on the bright side, we are not involved in any raging wars at this point, so times are better than during the Johnson/Nixon era or the Bush/Cheney era.

Those here who blame any or all problems here on left or right wing politics are full of crap. Many spend their here time projecting their failures and their miserable lives on phantom daemons in order to escape the fact they they alone are totally responsible for what failures they are.

I like the fact that it is Native New Yorkers.....that think their city is becoming unremarkable. At least they aren't to the point of thinking their city is irrelevant.

Funny. I did reference the very liberal/bohemian set (read liberals in NYC themselves) who now lament on the state of NYC and it's fall from greatness. I know, you missed that part. It is still funny. Thanks,.

Unfortunately, you fail to understand what the article is really all about. Not that NYC is unlivable but rather that, in their view, it is no longer a "significant cultural entity" as it was always known to be.

Had you known more about NYC's great cultural history, been involved with the arts scene and lived there for 35 years like I did, the article would have meant more sense to you.

Thus, the joke's on you, buddy.

I really dig it when folks wax all poetic about the "city" and it's cultural impact. The truly fun part is the expression that somehow "culture" is diminished when all the underlying sketch is being removed from it.

No, the joke isn't on me. It's still the pretentious idea that what happens now in the city is somehow diminishing it's value as a cultural center. I do recall having said that already. Its like the now middle aged punk rockers complaining that all their value has faded.... Things change. Rigid intolerance in the "cultured class" seems unwilling to change with it. And that, I think, is sad. And funny at the same time.
