Agreed it was a great episode capped by Kirk's comment "Let's get the hell out of here" at the end.

The episode was written by "speculative fiction" writer Harlan Ellison who had some great stories, but was a bit on the fringe due to his personality. I saw him on a SF panel once in the 70s.

Another great episode, but really a pilot for the character Gary Seven which was never picked up. I like Robert Lansing in 12 O'clock High and had hoped the series would be picked up. Teri Garr was always a favorite too.

The Cage - said by some critics back then as possibly the greatest TV episode of all time. But times have changed and we don't hear of it anymore.

For sci-fi, I might give that to the Dr. Who episode, "Blink"

They only exist when not observed. LOL!!! I still love that.

Red Dwarf Queeg, pure genius closely followed by Back to Reality and The last day. All deserve honourable mentions as they are not only incredibly funny but explore much deeper themes.

In that event, be sure to check out Vincent and the Doctor as well. :)

Blink won a bunch of awards.

I have never watched Red Dwarf but I've heard about it for years. I guess I will have to check it out.

Rob Grant and Doug Naylor created and wrote the first 6 seasons of Red Dwarf together. Then Doug Naylor went it alone and season 7 & 8 were crap. Then it came back recently with still only Doug writing but has been pretty good although not as good it's not bad at all!

They also wrote 2 novels together about Red Dwarf which take a much more serious tone to the story.

both of which are VERY VERY good I love how Red Dwarf ends with the best last line

"But in Bedford Falls everyday in Christmas Eve..."

On a side note Rob Grant and Doug Naylor were also a large part of the success of spitting image in the UK. (They essentially ran it at the beginning)

Interesting side note they tried to make a US version of Red Dwarf with Jane Leeves as Holly and Terry Farrel as the cat! It was complete crap and thank god never got past a pilot.

US TV execs just didn't get it.

The new Picard series will be set in yet another parallel universe!

The only real Star Trek is the original show and the original cast in da movies, all the rest are imitation Star Trek productions.

The thing that is most clear about the original ST series is the anti-racism and anti-war themes made by originator Roddenberry. He was one of Hollywood's all time biggest political & social liberals and those view points are clearly in evidence throughout the initial series.

I have not watched many of the subsequent series episodes, but it appears to me that these themes are not so much in evidence as in the initial series. For those of you who are more acquainted with those subsequent series, do you see such themes in those shows?

In ST:TNG, they dealt with LGBTQ rights on the episode "Outcast" in which Ryker falls in love with an alien whose entire race is only a single gender, but she identifies with being a female much to the concern of the rest of her race, who then try to "fix" her.

Then we have Measure of a Man that deals with body autonomy when Commander Maddox from the Daystrom institute wants to disassemble Data to see how he works.

In Who Watches the Watchers, we have an episode that deals with religious extremism versus logic.

Star Trek Voyager had an episode (Repentance) condemning the death penalty.

These are ones a remember off the top of my head, I'm sure there are many more.

Paradise DS9 one of my favourites!

The Village is a poor rip off.

Ds9 Rejoined Dax hooks up with a Trill who she used to be married to in a previous host and now they're both women!
