It doesn't have to be a news story. Tell us all about it.

It all depends on the job, and it goes something like this.

If you are guarding a bank, then you need to position yourself with a view out the front door so that you can see people coming in, before they come in. You need to profile each of them. Hat plus hoodie plus sunglasses is a high chance of a robber. If you see a gun out then you draw and fire without asking any questions.

If you are guarding an outdoor mall then you are usually dealing with homeless people invading it and using the facilities without spending any money. The merchants hate this and your job is to escort the homeless off. You always need to keep about 10 feet between you and them, and you use your voice, starting softly and politely and if then necessary ramping louder and yelling at them if need be just like recruits in boot camp. I have had my baton out twice so far and my gun unsnapped once -- these are with the violent homeless. One of my buddies had to draw and aim against one that had a rebar in his hand and was brandishing it. They hate security guards.

It is nerve racking but you get paid to be alert and protective of your clients. No glory in it. Just a very dangerous job.

My best jobs so far have been guarding a mayor and guarding a movie star. It's exciting to meet these people. They always look you over from head to foot and at your weapons (gun, baton, pepper spray) and then they smile with their approval. With the movie star there were 4 of us guarding him. With the mayor there were two of us.

My best friend used to work undercover security for Sears in Downtown Dallas. He was 19 and unarmed stopping shoplifters in the late 80s. One guy pulled a knife on him and sliced across his belly. My friend pulled out his handcuffs and sliced him across the forehead and knocked him out. Be careful out there.

Me. Never have for the dozen or so times. Just use commonsense and meet in a public place like a busy plaza.

You can do both. I can't depend on the other guy having the common sense not to try something in a public place. The local REI parking lot is my preferred venue

I guess I don't worry about some guy pulling a gun on me for a tent (last thing I sold).

Do you have a CCW permit? If so, why, and what circumstances prompt you to exercise it?

Yes. CCW is the only permit my town gives out. I never carry. Never felt the need to carry even when I was living in South Boston and did the 10 minute walk from the subway station to my place at midnight, which went right past one of the low income housing projects.
I have a gun permit because I enjoy target shooting. It's something I grew up doing with my dad.

That's right. Commonsense is the key, not carrying a firearm everywhere you go.

I'm not against anyone needing to carry a gun. It's just not something I need to do. To each his own....

Outside of ranchers, farmers, those living around brown bears and cougars, law enforcement, and the rare individual who lives in a truly dangerous neighborhood, no one needs to carry every day.

If I only carried when I felt that where I was going was that risky, I simply wouldn't go to that place. I carry because you don't know when the bad things will happen.
