why do you want employers to be able to pay employees $3.50 an hour?

the tax payer ends up paying if the employer doesn't via welfare costs

the min is just the minimum one can pay an employees, same as 40 hours is the max an hourly employee can work before overtime pay required or we would all be working 60 hours a week

I'd like to make a note on that one.

If I am the victim or someone else's actions, somebody owes me compensation, and my condition is not my fault. I am exonerated, and owed something better.
If I am the person responsible for me, nobody owes me, and both my financial position and life conditions are my fault. Most people don't want to accept that.

If I can get others to agree as to the form of victimization (such as the rich are only rich because they stole it from the poor) I support and justify my own position as victim because others are victims too and they agree with me.

The down side which is never considered by these people is that when I reject responsibility for the consequences of my own choices, I don't learn anything, I don't change anything, and I don't have any control over my own life. I have chosen victimhood over responsibility, and it will be permanent until I find the courage to do otherwise.

I think there's a third state. The one where you're in a state where when you're on welfare it means you are required to accept the first job offer you get.

Unfortunately government has never learned how to protect you from yourself, and that is the number one reason behind most people's complaints.

Not in this case. It really is about equal protection of the law regarding the concept of employment at will.

Nope, not a white male. Look at my picture of me in my avatar. I am 64% privileged white male, 21% oppressed negroid, 15% genocided American Indian. I have a dog in every fight, black, white, yellow. I am however, a superior male. They don't have to make sexual harassment laws to protect me like women seem to need.

Nor is it it's job to protect you from yourself. It was not given that power in the constitution AS WRITTEN, so it doesn't have any power there according to the Constitution.

Of course, anyone can quit a job at will. However, firing someone is substantially different in many positions and can become quite a substantial legal risk.
Hiring as well has a huge disparity. When you hire, you must be compliant with many rules against discrimination for example- but if the candidate discovers the employer is connected to anything he does not like, he can refuse the job or quit his position. This would mean you cannot refuse to hire a woman, but an applicant can refuse to work for a woman. Or because you are catholic- or not catholic. You could choose any of a multitude of variables; sexual preference, race, religion age, shape of your nose- and the rules allow the employee unlimited latitude. However if you fire or do not hire an employee and there are any grounds for suspicion of discrimination, the department of labor may well decide to file against you on behalf of a person claiming so. That is a one-way street; they never step in to defend you if someone files a discrimination suit. That subsidizes the chosen employee cases, but never subsidizes the employer case. Not so equal.

In the effort to improve the fairness (and grease the squeaking wheels) we have also complicated things and created many problems. There is always someone anxious to make an issue out of something they feel offended by, no matter how inconsequential.

The point is, they couldn't really do that if they tried, and if they did, it would make matters even worse. However it would be nice once in a while if a politician reminded people that taking care of themselves is their first responsibility instead of promoting dependence.

I worked with poor, very poor black and Latino students in Brooklyn, and your lack of awareness is why we have bigotry. No one enjoys living at the poverty level and to conclude that women have babies to get welfare shows your contempt. If on,y you got as upset over big corporations getting billions in tax
You make the word victim a dirty word. People are in fact victims. . Do you think when I couldn’t get a credit card in my own name, I wasn’t a victim of sexism? When someone doesn’t hire someone because of skin color, are they not victims of discrimination? You have no comprehension of discrimination and it is clearly illustrated by your examples. You left out the employee knows he can exploit someone who needs the work desperately

And of course you left out the facts that the bulk of "victims" of themselves, and of the people promoting socialism.
There is a battle of lies taking over society, as personal character fades and is replaced by so many anxious to be victims, and get the benefits of blaming others for their poor choices and demanding compensation from those who have actually accomplished and built.

Nobody said it was easy to make something of yourself- but the alternative of feeling sorry for yourself is becoming epidemic, and people are abandoning integrity, self respect and personal pride to wallow in it. Too busy to consider hating and blaming to find themselves, took cowardly to take control and responsibility for their lives- thus they have no power over it.

Nothing good happens until you get your butt in the drivers seat and take that responsibility and control.

it is about lowering the cost of government through simplification.

unemployment compensation for simply being unemployed, is simpler and more cost effective.

Can you cite a plank in any past Republican platform that ever said they want people to grow their own food? And I hope you are aware that in the 1800's not everyone was a farmer. There were blacksmiths, doctors, soldiers, sailors, trappers, scholars, dentists, store owners, entertainers, etc. none of which owned or knew how to use a plow. We have not all grown our own food since the dawn of agriculture. So we are going back several millennia before the 1800's. But if you are content with the minimum wage, you can live in my shed and take care of my property. Heck, maybe you can plant some crops for me! :)

Pedagogy is important, yes. But IMHO, by the time anyone stands in front of a classroom, they have had at least 16 years seeing what works and what doesn't without a single course devoted to pedagogy. And if you are smart enough to earn a four year degree in a particular discipline, you should be able to figure out how to teach the material in your specialty successfully. And you always have older peers that you can go to for free advice. College professors don't take any hours of pedagogy courses. Your math prof never took a course in how to teach math.

We’ve tried that experiment, it was called the guilded age. Without the supplimental income you are creating more desperation in the workforce, leading them to accept lower wages and longer hours to try to survive. I don’t buy that things will just work out.

You mean like the unpaid interns and volunteers that work for offices and political campaigns of candidates that propose raising the minimum wage to $15?

$0.00/hr is OK while $3.50/hr is not?

The always did and are doing so now. There are more good jobs out there than people to fill them. Make yourself worth $20 an hour. Supplimenting them to not to insures they won't.

You are talking about a check for everybody that doesn't want to work..... That would be popular for sure, as so many people no longer take pride in being self-sufficient and aren't bothered by being on a public dole.

Good post. They are victims of targeted destructive institutional racism, but the poor do have babies for welfare.

There should never be a check for anyone able to work who chooses to remain idle.
