I'm not as fast as I used to be. I can't run marathons any more. My gray hair makes me more of a target also. We can't stay young forever, but I still have 15-20 years of work left and family who depend on me. With the amount of background checks and security clearances I've had, there is no reason I can't carry a gun anywhere.(other than need to in certain government installations) I've worked in 2 Federal Reserves, DEA, CIA, FBI, all branches of the military, ICBM missile silos, NASA, USPIS, US Bureau of Engraving and Printing, state and federal prisons, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, Bell Helicopter, Texas Instruments, all major airlines, all major phone companies and ISPs, Level 3, offshore mining and drilling platforms, etc........... This was all after having a secret security clearance for my AD military stint. I have relatives who are judges, a federal prosecutor, a top secret military linguist, and a BATFE agent. I'm not indispensable, but qualified people with technical knowledge don't grown on trees and I am not easy to replace.

Besides, the 2A applies to us all until we prove otherwise. Most people are extremely valuable to somebody.

You can do anything you want, I never said you couldn't. You're the one who started a post with, "Do I not have a right to do my job?" I never even implied you or anyone else didn't. If you work in a dangerous area at night, and you need to carry to feel confident, by all means, carry.

I've been through this over and over in here. There are some people who probably should carry in this country. Ranchers, some farmers, people who live in, work in, recreate in, wilderness areas, people who live or work in very dangerous communities, usually inner cities, and so forth. I'm not a fan of being a fool. I am a fan of using your brain. You can argue from all sorts of angles as to what has changed in this country over the past 30 years or so. I think the problem is people aren't using common sense as much as they used to.

There's too many unknowns to say for certain. Do I think I can outrun or outmaneuver the attacker? If I move out of the way, does the attacker adjust their direction to intercept me?

If its a dog, I'll shoot it or if I'm unarmed, offer my arm for it to clamp onto, then go for its eyes with the thumb of my free hand.

If its a human, I'll ready my weapon and inform them I'm armed (if there's time). But if they're still coming at me and I can't get away, I'll shoot. If I'm without a firearm, Then I'll try to keep something between my vital areas and the knife- a weapon or even the back side of my arm, while I try to disarm or incapacitate the attacker by some means. I have no training or experience at unarmed combat, so it would be a CF. But I would fight til I couldn't, or no longer needed to.

Side note- my ceramics teacher was attacked by a dog once. It was clamped on to his arm and had him pinned to the ground, so he stuck his finger up its a$$... It promptly let go and ran away. I would consider this tactic.

The correct answer is "gun it down". That was my point. This thread. The correct answer. If we get to a point where the dog "clamps" on some body parts of yours, you already lost. Tendons will be cut, you will feel burning sensations and weird twitches in your arm forever, and not to mention the infection that is gonna contaminate your blood.

Drunk and drugged people are unpredictable. Could not be knifing, but actually, knifing with a c*ck, if you're a girl. That suits ye well now as an answer?

Give a warning if there's time to. If it works, great. If not, shoot.

    I can't argue hypothetical questions.

    Do you -

    1) say hello
    2) run
    3) spray them with pepper spray
    4) climb a tree
    5) shoot them (being in America)
    6) take a selfie with them
    7) up your medication so in future you avoid dark ally's
8.) make passionate love to them
    9) thank your lucky stars because a sink hole just opened up, cutting their path from you
    10) shout "BOO" and watch them run

I can honestly say I've never been in a dark alley by myself, nor will I ever in the future. There aren't any dark alley's in the rural area that I live. But for arguments sake...if a knife wielding man came upon me I'd run. Even at 51 I can outrun many even half my age. Pit bull's are domesticated animals and as such wouldn't be in a dark alley by itself. So nothing to worry about there.

The idea that you might want a gun is pretty revealing at that point in time. The notion that everyone needs a gun, all of the time because one instance that happens to another person in a life time for .001% of the time is not justification for you having an accident and shooting an innocent bystander which is seven times more likely. Especially so if the vast majority of the population go through their life never meeting attacking pit bulls or people in alleys with knives.

This is the boogie man talking. Go buy a lottery ticket. Your chance of winning is about the same.

    Well, yes..considering the OP

A knife yielding man, or a pitbull dog, starts to run toward you in a dark empty alley.

The topic is about being cornered in a dark empty all at night.

The night time in a city is the worse place to discharge a gun. It’s much safer for the public at large, including yourself.....to avoid dark alleys, where the boogie man might jump out and you end up shooting an innocent apartment dweller or an innocent alley cat. You're seven times more likely to get shot if you carry a gun to begin with, either by accidental discharge or by teen in heat you’ve jumped while fkn his girl and he steals your gun and beats you over the head with it.....

    and it goes off.

    Explain why.

At last checking, no individual present in the discussion has stated anything resembling the notion of "everyone" needing a firearm. The fact that there is nothing but misrepresentation and interpretation on the part of yourself is quite telling.

Which does not change the fact that a significant amount of the population has encountered threats in their lives where a firearm is necessitated.

Nothing more than an out of hand dismissal of the experiences of those who have actually been victims of violence, essentially stating that they and their lives do not matter and are not worth considering, simply because there are not enough of them in the opinion of yourself to count.

My days of walking through dark alley's are long gone. The only time I ever walked through a dark alley was when I was with friends going from one bar to another in Boston, so the likelihood of being attacked by a lone person with a knife was pretty damn slim. As for it being seven times more likely to get shot if you carry...I don't buy into that. I also don't buy into your 'teen in heat' scenario.
While I personally don't need to carry a gun to feel safe going out in public, I don't begrudge anyone who does need a gun to feel safe going out in public. We all have different comfort levels.

The area around the Texas State Fair is a sewer. You even have cops killing people in their own homes. My wife took the kids to the state fair last week. You can bet she was packing, and not because of dogs. Dallas is in the middle of a police shortage. They are 850 people below normal staffing levels.

No offense, but if that area is THAT bad, why on earth would you bring your kids there?
