Microsoft employees have signed a letter calling on executives to ditch a proposed bid for a US military contract that would see the technology giant providing computer power for artificial intelligence to be used in warfare for the next ten years.

The letter accuses of Microsoft of betraying its principles "in exchange for short-term profits" in a plan that would force employees to build a product who have no idea "whether our work is being used to aid profiling, surveillance, or killing".

"Many Microsoft employees don’t believe that what we build should be used for waging war.

The Pentagon's version of Genisys? Using taxpayer dollars to fund more creative ways to commit genocide?

Anyway kudos to Microsoft and Google workers for standing up to the beast.

Our enemies will have it so what they are actually saying is that they want us unprepared to fight back.

    How very unpatriotic of them.

Bed wetters who don't think the US is worth defending shouldn't be working on systems to protect the US from our enemies.

As far as Google is concerned ,,, the people who swept searches away from the 1/05/2011 post and to the excuse of the dailyKos poster who encouraged the assassination of Gabby Giffords for her Pelosi vote on 1/03/2011 shouldn't view themselves as holding a higher ground than some garden variety mass murderer.

Probably the same people who will bitch when we find that we are not prepared to defend ourselves.

It figures the terrified warmongers would come out of the woodwork to defend the Pentagon. Then again the Pentagon relies heavily on their fear to suck them dry for their military industrial complex brethren.

We "terrified warmongers" are the ones who enable you to make stupid comments like that.

So they want someone less competent and less ethical to do it? Because I gurantee you some one will and they might not be near as high minded or nearly as good at security protocols.

The only thing you chickenhawks enable is mass murder for profit. I'd rather be "stupid" to you than an enabler of endless war.

    Who is "they"?

And I guarantee that if no one wants to do it it won't get done.

Microsoft workers et al. is they, and I guarantee you that they will find someone to do it. Even some scientist have trouble saying no to the kind of money that will be offered for this. And please not I'm not saying I think it is a good idea or even that I like the idea. Just pointing out to you that people who believe in stuffing tech genies back in whatever bottle they crawl out of usually live just about long enough to regret it.

Too bad there is not a way that us mass murderers can't pick and choose who we defend.

What's wrong with using AI to keep our military capability ahead of other countries?

Somehow I missed that the Microsoft workers said that in the article.

You're probably right, money buys nearly everything. And when you have obedient citizens and many of them support endless genocide out of terror or for whatever reason, you get what you pay for.

Ahead of what? The same bunch that allegedly couldn't stop 19 Arabs from committing mass murder and mayhem on American soil armed with box cutters (according to the official tale)?

They didn't but that is one possible alternative to them not doing it.

The VAST majority of what the pentagon purchases is grossly overpriced junk that does not work as advertised.Witness our abysmal war record since WW2.

Thanks to Congress. Most of those years it was run by Democrats.

The Pentagon relies on intelligence. Hence the project.

The problem s not the military of it's equipment but that our political leadership seems bound and determined to avoid victory at any cost. Understand something, war is an essentially amoral undertaking, so you better decide before you ever start what your goals are and the shortest and cheapest route to victory in terms of human life and material in that order. Any unnecessary variation prolongs that war and results in more death and suffering and should be avoided if at all possible.
