    • There is agreement among researchers that illegal immigrants overwhelmingly have modest levels of education — most have not completed high school or have only a high school education.
    • There is also agreement that immigrants who come to America with modest levels of education create significantly more in costs for government than they pay in taxes.
    • A recent NAS study estimated the lifetime fiscal impact (taxes paid minus services used) of immigrants by education. Averaging the cost estimates from that study and combining them with the education levels of illegal border-crossers shows a net fiscal drain of $74,722 per illegal crosser.
    • The above figures are only for the original illegal immigrants and do not include any costs for their U.S.-born descendants. If we use the NAS projections that include the descendants, the fiscal drain for border-crossers grows to $94,391 each.
    • This means that for each 100,000 illegal immigrants stopped or deterred by a wall, the saving to taxpayers would be nearly $7.5 billion.
    • If a border wall prevented 160,000 to 200,000 illegal crossings (excluding descendants) in the next 10 years it would be enough to pay for the estimated $12 to $15 billion cost of the wall. 1
    • Newly released research by the Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA) done for the Department of Homeland Security indicates that 170,000 illegal immigrants crossed the border successfully without going through a port of entry in 2015. While a significant decline in crossings from a decade ago, it still means that there may be 1.7 million successful crossings in the next decade. If a wall stopped just 9 to 12 percent of these crossings it would pay for itself.2
    • If a wall stopped half of those expected to successfully enter illegally without going through a port of entry at the southern border over the next 10 years, it would save taxpayers nearly $64 billion — several times the wall’s cost.

It was your beloved BLOTUS that was abducting small children at the border and trafficking them all over the country.

    Excellent post.

It's worth mentioning that all 4 major border walls we currently employ cut down illegal crossings by over 90% in the areas where they were built.

I didn't say the House was co-equal with the presidency. I said Congress was.

I know it is within McConnell's power to call for a vote or not. But it is irresponsible not to, when the Senate already voted for pretty much the exact same bill.

The ONLY reason for him not to call a vote is to run interference for the president. So Trump is not put in the position of vetoing a bill that would open the government.

In doing this, he is making Congress subservient to the presidency. That's not the way the system is supposed to work. Trump said he would be proud to take responsibility for this shutdown. Let him prove it by putting a bill in front of him that he would either have to sign or veto.

Congress represents the will of the people.

Most Americans do not want to spend $40 - $60 Billion for the ineffective wall that is Not needed.

Most Americans want smart border security that works.

McConnell is protecting Trump by not passing the funding Bills that Americans want.

    Bring on 2020 Elections !!!

If things were so dire why didn't Trump get his wall funded during the past two years when Republicans controlled Congress?
Also, far more Americans die at the hands of other Americans. Dont they matter?

He responded to a post about the harms of the shutdown with a "boo hoo, go mow the border."

I should have said minimizing or ignoring the sufferings of millions of fellow americans.

So, what would having a vote do if they don't have the 2/3rds of congress to over rule the veto? Be a political stunt? I can see from looking back at your history you never once said anything about Reid keeping the votes on a budget that the house passed from coming to the floor. Many, MANY times the house passed a bill or budget for years and Reid refused to bring it to the floor. I am guess it was an oversight on your part that you never made a thread about that right?

    Be patient.

Mitch McConnell is the only reason Donald Trump is still in the White House. McConnell took on the burden of providing cover for Trump since day one. He has always placed party first. His obstruction of any measure to restrain or stop Trump has given a lot of Senators political cover from right wing voters in their districts, and strengthened the hands of Senators in Trump districts. McConnell also controls the money, as he knows how to shake the money tree and decides who gets it.

But McConnell doesn't take too kindly to being betrayed, and almost always exacts serious revenge.

And he will eventually reach that point with Trump. Trump keeps trying him.

The first time was the way Trump bungled and blustered over the first GOP attempt to repeal the ACA. Trump did what he is doing now, constantly appearing to change positions, talking loosely about different ideas at the same time while endorsing none, and never communicating clearly what he will agree to.

That constant vacillation is what sank the GOP's first effort to repeal the ACA and set the stage for the failure of the second.

While his talk radio base heard every variation of his vacillation, and parroted them as if they were genuine negotiating offers, Trump himself never committed himself to any one of them.

This pattern is repeating itself with the shutdown.

There are a couple of key differences.

One is that Trump created this crisis. No one was talking about a wall until one of his staffers suggested it as a gimmick he could use at his rallies to do some of his trademark race baiting.

Another is that Trump already made a deal, and then went back on it. No one owes him anything now.

He also blew up the negotiations on the issue, live on national television.

Now, he's busy doing exactly the same thing he had done on every legislative battle.

Appearing to take a my way or the highway position, and then taking all sides simultaneously in public for the entertainment and conning of his base.

The other objective in Trump's mind is to declare victory, by floating a a scattershop of loose idea in public, any which of which he will enbrace if there is a deal and claim as his own. He's for everything now, as long as he gets $5 billion.

And, of course, the other is to avoid responsibility, a key Trump trait. Trump never takes responsibility for anything.

Even now, as he bellowed that he would proudly take responsibility for shutting down the government over his wall, and then turned right around and tried to blame anyone and everyone else for it.

McConnell is tired of being bitch slapped by this imbicile.

So, while he is still providing legislative cover for Trump, it isn't going to last.

Indeed, they're running toward a deadline.

GOP senators are already peeling off.

If McConnell calls the question, the votes are already there to open the government and forget about the wall. The House has already voted that, and so has the Senate (before Trump went back on his word). He knows that. One might think Trump knows it too, but he's not too bright, nor are any of the flunkies he has around him.

Every day this goes on will bring the day forward when enough Senators defect to provide a veto proof majority, which is all but inevitable.

Already prominent GOP senators are announcing their opposition to Trump's threat to use emergency powers.

This is how this is going to end. If Trump tries emergency powers, the courts will stay him, and the weaklings in the Senate will have the perfect excuse to put a stop to this nonsense.

It really is only a matter of time.

We are headed to a full blown Constitutional crisis. The only question is which way we get there.

You would have a point were it not for the fact that Harry Reid never shut the government down.

Trump made this crisis, all by himself.

McConnell is a true example of why the American people get screwed over daily by Congress.

Mitch KNOWS that enough of his GOP Senators will defect and vote the deal Trump originally agreed to into legislation and vote it with a veto proof majority (they've already done it once).

If Trump pulls his emergency declaration stunt, that day will come much sooner.

I don't know... if the Trumpublican Senate had to vote on the EXACT SAME CR they voted on 100-0 just a few weeks ago, I don't know if it would even pass.

Remember, they only voted it 100-0 (voice vote) when they thought they had the pumpkin on board.

Now? I don't know... it sounds like there are enough vocal defections that it would be darn close, but I still highly doubt the Senate would be veto-proof now

It that isn't the walking-talking version of strange, I don't know what is.

Actually, I have a lot of admiration for McConnell. I only with the he had higher ideals.

He is not to be underestimated. He is an excellent legislator. Indeed, watching him and Nancy Pelosi is a fascinating study in the exercise of power by two top practioners of the art.

In sharp contrast to the behavior of the President.

McConnell knows that his true power is in his ability to hold a coalition together and control the agenda and the vote (neither of which can be guaranteed on a consistant basis).

McConnell has always been a party and coalition man. Therein lies the real long term power in a legislative body or committee.

He will never be an idealist, and never take position over principle. He is a cyncial and practical operator.

He will never be remembered in the same breath as Ronald Reagan, John McCain or George HW Bush.

But he will be ranked among the more effective Congressional leaders and belongs in the same league as Dick Russel or Sam Reyburn.

Although I don't think they're going to name a building after him (at least, not in DC).

    No, it's not...

an indirect veto of a legislative bill by the president or a governor by retaining the bill unsigned until it is too late for it to be dealt with during the legislative session.

He was never actually presented with a bill, since the House didn't approve what the Senate did...

Time is not on Trump's side. Be patient. The outcome of this farce was determined on December 11th, when Trump went out of a limb and demanded a chain saw.

It's only a matter of time.

I got nothing but time, since I have yet to be personally impacted by this shutdown either way, nor am I personally impacted by the presence, or lack of, a border wall.

I just find it hilarious that McConnell will no longer bring a bill back to the Senate that they passed 100-0 3 weeks ago...

There is no honest rationale for that... Politically smart I suppose, but not a logical leg to stand on...
