CNN's Chris Cillizza and Harry Enten have put together some analysis of 10 leading contenders for 2020. I'm interested in what other people think.

I know that Biden is supposed to be in the lead but most people I talk to like Beto. The list in descending order is below and the article is here

    10. Julian Castro
    9. Amy Klobuchar
    8. Kirsten Gillibrand
    7. Bernie Sanders
    6. Sherrod Brown
    5. Cory Booker
    4. Elizabeth Warren
    3. Joe Biden
    2. Beto O'Rourke
    1. Kamala Harris

My preference is Beto. I think he would connect well, he has vision and a positive message and would have some credibility in the south. I don't like Bernie or Warren very much - too far left to win and in the case of Sanders he's a bit over the top in terms of continuous admonishments. It's like being stuck in class with a cranky math teacher.

I think Biden and Sanders should sit it out. Fresh blood is badly needed in the party.

Beto will be a fine contender, but he isn't ready yet. He's still finding his way and learning about how to present himself.

Klobuchar and Gillibrand just don't inspire me.

Warren, to me, is the strongest candidate. She is clear about what she stands for, and will be perfect to run against the corporate candidate.

I would say that Warren is intelligent, knowledgeable on policy and presents her views well. Can she connect or would she be seen as aloof?

I know this thread was designated for LW, but PLEASE run an obvious AA case, far leftist like Fauxca or Kamalamalama who couldn't get elected dog-catcher anywhere other than their LW-Complex cloisters.

Trump would roll either of them like a cheap cigar.

Do you want to know what people on the left think, or what closet conservatives (Democrats/liberals) think?

    The list is a 100% non-starter.

    None have a chance.

    Only Obama can win.

    They forgot Tulsi Gabbard.

In any case, I think Biden and Sanders are no starters, yesterday's news.

Warren probably has too much baggage. Trump's "Pocahontas" label is sticking, and her gene test didn't do much to dispel it. I like her ideas, but I am afraid she will be greeted with "Pocahontas" screams, no matter what she has to say.

Beto is charismatic. He could be a rising star, if he avoids mistakes.

I personally like Sherrod Brown and his "dignity of work" slogan. If you want to beat Trump, you have to be able to get flyover state voters to vote for you. he may be able to do it, although he has some personal baggage that would become center in a national campaign.

I'd say no to Booker and Harris, too polarizing.

Gillibrand and Klobuchar could be okay, although not exciting.

Excellent question...I, myself, wonder if she is 'electable'. I don't see her as aloof, but I can't put my finger on exactly what it is that best describes the trait that might get in the way. I'll keep thinking about that. As for the 'Pocahontas' thing, she will face it from Trump's base. For any thinking person who takes the time to learn anything about her, the faux scandal will be ignored and we'll be able to focus on her policies.

Of course, one of Warren's biggest problems is her age.

She will be 71 next year and she doesn't represent the kind of "generational change" that some Dems are seeking.

I agree... but for different reasons.

The DNC-E is not only looking for a crazy mouthpiece, but one that is on a very short rope. Burrito O'Roarke has no pedigree that would warrant enough trust.

If Klobuchar were to step up right now as a true LEADER and work with Trump, she would have a shot at beating him in 2020.
She is one of the very few Democratic candidates who is smart enough to debate Trump and not get smoked.
But if she doesn't step up now, she is not going to get enough money thrown in her direction.

Kamala Harris lost any shot at beating Trump when she used the phrase, "Vanity Project." She is now officially toast. She will get very little money.

He doesn't have a track record. The only reason we're talking about him is because he raised gobs of money trying to unseat Cruz. If that had worked, it might be a different story, but even so, he's still a straight white male. I don't think there is a big market for that anymore in the Democratic primary.

Yes. We need someone to rewrite the Constitution. Only Beto can create a country that outlasted and out-prospered any other in history. Just what are his qualifications besides his electoral performance.

Perhaps it is her age. I'm hoping that the new generation of voters don't see age as a negative and they give her platform a listen.

As far as I'm concerned the field is wide open and, with Trump as a template, candidates don't have to know anything about anything to run - just get up on a platform, spout off lies & falsehoods and conspire with a foreign adversary to win an election by a whisker - pretty simple, yes? :D

If Trump is the GOP candidate in 2020 (a longshot IMHO) I can see Michael Bloomberg taking a run for the Democrats. Progressives won't like it but playtime is over.....serious times require a serious response and Bloomberg can provide this, in spades.......

Like you, I don't see Trump running in 2020. But if he does, I agree that Bloomberg would make a fantastic opponent. The time for underestimation (and playtime) is over. Young blood is a fine thing, but not in this climate. Aspirational and idealistic candidates need not apply.

    Beto for Pres/

    Amy for VP

Americans are looking for candidates with integrity. Hopefully they can withstand the customary Republican scandal-ridden image makeover.

I like the list. I think Trump would clean the whole lot. Form an objective look I think Amy K tops the list. Beto is very appealing. He looks good and, if you pay no attention to the substance, he is a great speaker. Though I think his attempting, as a drunk driver, to flee an accident will have much more affect nationally than it did in Texas. His recent assertion that the constitution needs to be replaced will not fly far.

Yeah, I think Beto with either Amy or Kamala Harris.
My only concern with Amy is she might lose it and call Pence a MF.

Howabout: Holder, Oprah, Cuomo, Swalwell, and well known plus loved by the press -- Pelosi or Schumer. Hillary is like 3-day old fish. But the old guard will knock down any new comers who haven't paid their dues. The democrats like to criticize Trump but who has the nerve to run against him?
