Like it or not, the money the men you denigrate here fund a big part of conservation efforts with the money spent on these hunts. In contrast to the native populations who poach for tusk/horn etc. who are responsible for most depletion of species. Your stereotypes are grossly misplaced.

Sadly this is the harsh truth nuke. I did a research paper in undergrad and spent quite some time talking to game wardens in Africa (via phone conference) and I spoke with trophy hunters as well. I am passionately against killing these beautiful animals but the harsh effing reality is without these guys dropping millions to get the chance to blow these beautiful animals up the parks would be wiped out within a year.

The game warden of Africa told me that because of trophy hunting (which he was also against) the lion and elephant population has increased so dramatically that they have become a nuisance. I hate human beings when it comes to this stuff but it is what it is.

Then it could be argued that, if the above is a constant, and enough trophy hunting is permitted to legally occur, the elephant population in the nation of Africa will continue increasing to the point it is no longer threatened and on the verge of extinction.

If they were going by the law of the land, however stupid that law of the land may be, the dastardly deed can be criticized, but it's just hot air.

I love donkeys and mules, even burros. That photo makes me sick.

But if I were in danger of starving I would shoot one and have it quartered in ten minutes.

Horse flesh is good eating, and that flesh probably is, too.

When I lived on the rez the injuns shot a wild burro and cut off it's hind quarters, dug a pit, started as fire and buried the piece of meat.

Kinda like a Hawaiian BBQ on the rez.

Next day we had real burritos.

A real burrito used burro meat.

In some areas of Africa the elephant population has grown to a point where they are destroying the habitat they live in. This results in the animals leaving the reserves and destroying farm crops. It often results in clashes between villagers and elephants. In short, the herd must be thinned so the herd can survive. Because the large mature animals are what draws the tourists, the immature animals are what is thinned. The man who shot this animal paid a very large fee for the privilege, probably around $50K. That money is used to feed and maintain the herd.

That's what I was thinking, elephants leave a huge footprint on the environment and I bet after eating all of those green plants they fart and the elephant farts aren't being taxed like how they tax cow farts in California.

I see your point. Elephant flatulence is causing global warming. That guy with the gun does resemble Al Gore. Saving the world with bullets.

If these so called hunters think shooting something as large as an elephant is a challenge, I suggest they instead try hunting mice and rats, now there is a real test of hunting skills.

Most elephants are killed by black people. Do you hate black people now?

I’m a former hunter. I didn’t stop hunting because of some great epiphany but because at my age, 75, I can’t picture myself dragging a deer, even a disemboweled deer, a mile through the woods.
I am not a fan of trophy hunting but I don’t condemn trophy hunters. Having said that, let’s get a little clarity on what was shot. It was an elephant but it was not a baby elephant. A baby elephant would not have tusks. Elephant tusks are modified teeth in the upper jaw and first emerge at about a year after birth. Tusks grow about six or seven inches a year. The picture indicated the elephant is about five years old. Not a baby but a child by human standards and not a child but a young adult by elephant standards b

What makes a rat less noble than an elephant?

What a load of nonsense. This is just trophy hunting based on a capitalistic system.
And my stereotyping is bang on "the buck". It's a stritckly white men thing, with the occasional white woman.
And they kill rhino's just as well,... not for the tusk... just to kill to have a picture taken with a dead animal.
Just go google trophy hunting yourself.

You maybe right but I have seen elephants up close and that is one tiny elephant in the picture. Also it was still an elephant that had its prime mating years ahead of it so whether its a "child" or a "teenager" is moot.

Elephants are one of the most intelligent animals on the planet outside of great apes, dolphins etc. nor are they overpopulated like deer are in my area which necessitates hunting to fend off mass starvation. There is no reason to shoot elephants and definitely not ones that young.

What makes shooting something as large as an elephant, giraffe or a rhino challenging???Now shooting mice or rats that would be a challenge and a true test of ones marksmanship.

Pure ignorance. A few elephants are taken annually by legal hunters. When taken legally, all parts of the animal must be used. The meat goes to the villagers, the skin is used and the tusks are destroyed. However, thousands are killed by poachers. Most are killed for their tusks and the rest is left to rot.

    Like I said....
    Go google trophy hunters.
It's your typical middle age white man who kill just to make a selfie, sometimes with his wife.
And them are some weird looking elephants.

WOW! Its no wonder you lose in debates all the time LOL Wow, I have seen more skill from my nieces and nephews.

So I will ask again, are you going to criticize black Africans? This is just sad.......its so sad and pathetic. Its like a race between a Chevy Volt and a Porsche 918 Spyder. You ever watch those videos of baby animals trying to move their parents but they can't no matter what they do? HAHAHAHAHA

Trophy hunter or poacher, animal Is no more or less dead. Why not lump them in the same group? Hell at least the trophy hunters try and obey the law overall, poachers ignore it totally. Why the white male comment? It shows your bias and nothing else.

To the poster who hates all hunters..silly comment. All emotions and no logic. Anybody can easily point to all the things you do in your life daily that negatively effects animals...your hypocritical to attack all hunters.

With the above assuming that once the animal is killed, the carcass is left to simply rot and no one benefits from the hunt taking place. Such is not the case.

Trophy hunting is legal and sanctioned by the government of the nation of Africa. If the act is found to be so objectionable to yourself, take it up with the government itself, not those who are actually abiding and complying with the law in place.

Organize a protest and donate far more funding to the nation of Africa, than any number of trophy hunters could ever manage to pay. Buy out the government of the nation of Africa and convince them to put an end to all trophy hunting. Otherwise cease the useless prattling.

Which makes it the most likely to be a problem animal and of the least value to the societal structure of the herd.

I love animals. Don’t hunt myself but have no issue with those that do.

It’s hard not to feel bad for animals in need. Lord knows I have enough shelter animals because of that!

But I have seen people who let that emotion destroy any logic they might have when speaking about animals.
