Should Old Traditions Be Forgot - - For PC?

@carlosofcali said, "I think Serra has lost favor after all the negativity from indigenous tribes. I'm sure the St Monica statue will be removed from Palisades pk some day. It is sort of strange. I don't think any other states have as many cities named after saints/ sacraments as California."
    (Huh? ref. St. Monica)
"No the issue is having religious art in a public park. The people of Santa Monica have struggled w/ Xmas displays in the past"

So the people of Santa Monica are concerned about her statue in their public park.
Coming soon, a referendum to change the name to Gandhi City
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And then there are all those statues that had to come down via mob rule.

    Confederate. Slave owners. Whatever.
    Really,
Should Old Traditions Be Forgot - - - For PC?

Certainly add space when it is worthy to give another point of view, such as Father Serra. But, walking on a bum leg so as not to burden an animal, along what is now Highway/Freeway 101 establishing missions a day's journey apart is positively commendable.
How about the dangers of tampering with history as we try to erase it?

Ideas. Other Traditions we should not forget but is becoming PC to do so?

    It is dishonest!

It is an attitude, a philosophy based on dishonesty.

Oh interesting. To me being PC means not being a dick. To each their own.

Don't you see the dishonesty the PC realm has created?
Not all. But the worst of it. Like it is PC to vandalize Trump's star in Hollywood.
Free Speech morphing into "My Speech Only".

As for Dickdom, it is bipartisan in their extremes.

Yeah hand me a hanky while I cry over a star being vandalized when as a gay man I have been verbally and physically harassed.

What is dishonest is claiming that St. Monica park will be changed because of PC>

Catholic saints committed no Treason against the USA. Gen. Lee is a scumbag because he led men against his nation.

    If not PC, what?

General Lee is a part of history.
So is stealing Texas from Mexico. ;)

Sometimes what's tried & true worked for a very good reason we may not fully understand.

I'm all for trying to make improvements, but we should be cautious.

Also, just because something new seems to be okay for 20 years doesn't mean it will be sustainable over larger time scales. Many of these cultural things adapted over time scales of many hundred years. Certain cultural attributes give some groups the advantage who were able to survive over inferior cultures. In some cases cultures were not prepared for sudden unexpected events that completely devastated the society and led to their culture going extinct.

Hitler is part of History too. Do you want to erect a statue of him? (in public)

BTW I often hear that the slave owners were Democrats. So why do the Republicans want to celebrate them?

being part of history does not negate Lee being a traitor.

I don't know what you mean by 'stealing' ...and 'stealing' has nothing to do with Treason.

And what if he had won? Then he would have been accepted as a part of history and all those atrocities would likely be overlooked or forgiven (kind of like Stalin, but probably even more so).

Plenty of American administrations in history had their atrocities (albeit to a much smaller scale).
Should Truman be demonized and his name be removed from all schools and buildings across the country?
Should Ataturk stop being revered in Turkey?
How big does the atrocity have to be before they are no longer held in esteem?

They can when used properly, in the appropriate place.

(Though there is a reason why they have a reputation for being overused)

No one is making a Hitler to Lee comparison

The poster made the correct comparison of bad actor in history to bad actor in history.

Just because Lee was a figure in History gives him no pass.

"Intelligence agencies should never have allowed this fake news to ‘leak’ into the public,” Trump tweeted Jan. 11. “One last shot at me. Are we living in Nazi Germany?”

I see the topic in this thread has become derailed. Can we get back to the original subject now?
