The Trump Administrations recent decision to pull out of the INF nuclear treaty may be the beginning of a new arms race - one that puts the world in the most dangerous nuclear threat since the 1960's Both Russia and the US, who own 93% of the worlds nuclear weapons between them are modernizing their arsenals in a new arms race that could have dire consequences for the entire planet. The threat of Mutually Assured Destruction appears to be a thing of the past as both sides are upgrading to a tactical nuclear capability in which the use of such deadly weapons is not considered unthinkable anymore but something to be prepared for as a distinct possibility in any new war.

According to Peter Kuzniak, Professor of History and Nuclear Studies at American University, one of the first talks between Vladimir Putin and newly elected Donald Trump was over the new START treaty signed between Russia and the US in 2010. Putin offered to extend the treaty.

According to Kuzniak, Trump put down the phone and asked his advisers what the START treaty was. He talked to his advisers for a few minutes then got back on the phone and said that no, he didn't think the US would extend the treaty.

So the US has announced it is going to abrogate the Antibalistic Missile Treaty of 2002, and now throwing out the INF, putting all the blame on Russia for it's European missiles.

"The United States has accused the Russians of testing and deploying a Tomahawk cruise missile that we say has a range of more than 500 kilometers. The Russians say it does not have a range of 500 kilometers, that it’s a lower range. The United States is basing this on highly classified information. There is no transparency. The basis for their allegations have not been released. And the Russians have not done anything to convince the world that it is not over the 500 kilometer level. They have done that, apparently, in response to the U.S. deploying ballistic missile defense. The Russians allege that our missile defense has an offensive capability within the range of 500 to 5500 kilometers. So both sides are making allegations against each other.

However the important thing is that the U.S. had decided to do this based on the urging, largely, of John Bolton. So Bolton became national security adviser in July of this year. He brought in Tim Morrison, another super hawk, onto the National Security Council. He had formerly been with the House Armed Services Committee. And between the two of them they took the initiative on arms control away from the State Department, and really away from the most in the Defense Department, and they are the ones who engineered this effort.

Now, Bolton has never found a treaty that he likes. Bolton had pushed the United States to get rid of the ABM Treaty in 2001. He opposes extension of the New START Treaty. And in 2011, before the United States made any allegations about Russian violations of the INF Treaty, Bolton was already urging the United States to get out of the INF treaty."

The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists has moved their doomsday clock to two minutes before midnight. This is the closest to midnight it has been since the US and Russia tested hydrogen bombs in the 50's and the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962.

The use of nuclear weapons in strategic warfare is no longer off the table as the US and Russia have both ungraded their weaponry and are actively planning for a nuclear conflict they see as winnable.

It's all about leverage... the US is blaming China and Russia but the truth is there are now quite a number of countries with nuclear weapons. Early last year the US did a Nuclear Posture Review, the Pentagon pushed for the development of low yield nuclear weapons that can be more readily used and therefore provide more leverage... (pose a greater threat to adversaries)

The problem of course is these weapons are more likely to destroy us than the 100 kiloton yield bombs... because they are far more likely to be used, poisoning our air, our food, our water... and our children.

The first arms race started well and good and then they realized they could use it to control the ignorant and buy of stock in arms manufacturing companies. That way they inflate the stock by saying "The Commies are coming we need MORE bombs, planes and bullets immediately" and then approving any price for anything destined or manufactured by them.

This is just more of the same, another way to steal money me and other Americans. Trump is erratic but he would turn tail and run from office if he screwed things up to bad and let the other people fix things. A war against 2 super powers wouldn't be good for business but the threat of war is great.

 

Oh please, pretty much every nation has accused Russia of violating this treaty.

Even Obama said they were.

Our intelligence agencies said they were, you know who they are, those guys we are supposed to believe.

Get rid of the law, of course!!!! This is just more of trump's treachery and treason.

 

How different is that than Obama's response to Bush breaking the law? Congress' response to Bush breaking the law or Brennan and Clapper committing perjury?

It is good to have the piece of paper while it is still working, but when it no longer works all it is good for is to throw it in the fireplace.

Treaty is not a law and when one stops following it, another is being taken advantage of. What Trump did was pretty much acknowledging the facts.
