Australians so fond of complaining over America's problems need look no further than their own country. When you guys improve your country, to the state America is approved. check back to complain again. We are not in charge of your climate, you are. If you think you can control it, simply act. If it works for you, let us know and we will try that system ourselves.

This is not over climate but in limited space, I tossed that in.

Americans, take heed. Australia is slumping now in real estate prices. For this you dare not blame President Bush nor Trump.

I don't want you alarmed over our market in the USA because the circumstances are far different than here in our country.

But you do not hear blame against the politicians at all in Australia. Do you wonder why not?

Who in Australia lets such sloppy building practices happen? I know my own local rules and they are very strong indeed.

Ive been saying for years that Australian politicians are incompetent, and many on this board would agree. I would say that none of them could find their own arse with both hands.

If you want to be educated about Australia, I suggest you find a better source than 60 minutes.

If you want to be educated about what Australia will become, I suggest you take a look at America in areas where the white working middle class no longer exists.

There's a reason K-mart had to shut its doors in the U.S. but is still doing very well in Australia.

The main problem in Australia is "non-conforming products" used in the past 20 years. We've had a fire recently in Melbourne in a building classified as moderate risk... I think instead of replacing the non conforming cladding (which would have cost far too much) the owners installed extra smoke detectors weeks before the fire.

    In Victoria vvv

yet the building with the fire was deemed moderate risk....

I would be curious to know if other countries have a similar problem of using this non conforming cladding and other non conforming products in the past 20 years... I am aware that much of China's ghost cities are of extreme poor quality... also the Grenfell Tower fire in the UK was due to non conforming poor quality products.... I wonder how many other countries have done the same to feed their property booms.

Ha.. it just gets better... 3/4 of occupied apartments were built in the last 25 years .... the era of non conforming products... lovely. Of course this figure does not include commercial properties.

From memory, the housing minister in Victoria said recently that there were regulations in place which prohibited use of inflammable cladding. Therefore, I feel that when these buildings are inspected, the cladding goes "unnoticed"...of course local councils nowadays outsource these "inspection duties" to private contractors to avoid responsibilities and possible legal consequences....and I suppose if someone is in power they can be corrupted...if you get what I mean....the private inspectors..not the council, of course......

In California, we have the UBC plus local codes for buildings.

So we catch problems such as yours at the time of the building. Building inspectors sign off that the building now conforms to law.

CA also inspects buildings fairly often. They do not inspect your residence once it is given the final approval though. So if the homeowner has installed flammable products where codes state none are to be, then the owner bears the legal problems and not the original builder.

Yes, we have these regulations here...a friend of mine had a building inspector recently who inspected her
carport which was just a roof held up by four metal stays...still needed an inspection...another friend had an inspection carried out on her swimming pool fence which is compulsory in Australia in an attempt to avoid
kiddies drowning in back yard pools...these inspections are costly, but local governments have outsourced
the responsibilities to private firms.....of course, there are inspectors, and there are inspectors........!!

Yes exactly, Australia have an enormous amount of red tape in virtually every industry... yet it happened. The more I consider this topic the more inclined I am to think this is a global problem. After all.... is almost everything not made in China, and more than likely other countries are yet to pick up on this issue... Australia being highly regulated as it is, taking immediate action in inspecting everything and not trying to hide it.

Also makes me wonder on the quality of buildings the Chinese Belt and Road Zombies are constructing in Africa and Asia...Middle East. Dubai?... this puts a whole new spin on the bad news that are on the way ... and not just for Australia.

In California you have defecatory inspectors who ensure you use the appropriately rationed 2 sheets per wipe instead of the excessive 3 or 4 sheet per wipe rort that has become the norm in most of the uncivilised world.

    All hail the bureaucracy!

Im Australian and ive been done 3 times for public urination. What a joke of a law. It was on grass in a subtle location!

Evidently there is no crime against pissing your pants in public.

If it can be regulated, CA Democrats find every way to regulate known to humans.

I can't speak for today, but when I lived in Germany in the past century, Germans would take it out and use it just about anywhere. Germans told me it is just nature.

I wonder how many countries around the world are experiencing structural issues in their buildings built in the last 20 years....China's legacy.

What's the point of so much development... other than creating massive amounts of debt... if it's simply going to collapse

We are brothers. We have marched into war side by side numerous times. WWI, WW2, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan - even when against our best judgment we have stuck with the ANZUS alliance and sent good men to die in wars, sometimes wars far removed from our region.

We have a contingent of leftist elites just as you do. Like yours, they do not represent the public at large. So take what they say with a grain of salt.
