How many individuals will be murdered in the meantime while the world waits for islam to catch up to other religions, and do away with its violent practices? Why should islam be given the benefit of the doubt when it has made absolutely no effort to mature and evolve?

Thread isn't about me, but it's interesting that "I'M" what triggers you, not the subject from the article.

Not all religion is the problem. For example, nobody is worried about Buddhism. You can try comparing Christianity to Islam all you want, but - 1) this thread isn't about Christianity 2) good luck because there's no comparison.

Who was it that originally sold the people of the nation of Africa to the settlers of the united states in the first place?

What many overlook is that the slave trade could not have been possible, if the people of the nation of Africa were not actively selling their neighbors, their family members, and anyone else among their own people who could be caught and put on the market. The people of the united states did nothing more than purchase what was a commercially available good at the time, no different from a chair, table, or any other innocuous piece of furniture.

they didnt sell family or friends but rival nations and the reason was the same as they did in ancient egypt, to aquire guns in order to defeat the invader [europeans] same tactic, old principle. its besides the point anyway as it was the actual bondage, torture and forced labour implemented by the whites in america THAT ACTUALLY MADE THE SITUATION INHUMANE. it was the conditions in america and on the middle passage that made this epidode the worst crime in history, not the sale. please, stop pointing fingers and be a man that your moma begs you to be, not a spineless jellyfish

Funny, it was a colonial way of thinking, "those people are retarded, let's enligth them". We're not in "Civilization" or "Age of Empire", all civilizations and religion doesn't follow the same path, there is no religion which is in Age 3 and another which in a Age 5.

Islam is a different religion from christianity, not a "late" christianity, with not the same relationship with sacred texts or power.

I noticed today that the Australian government announced its condemnation of the death penalty for gays in Brunei. Not one word condemning islam or sharia law, from which the death penalty originates...just the death penalty....of course no-one in Australia would notice this....we're all too dumb......
What a gutless government we have. Of course we cant offend our islamic trading partners, now can we...Indonesia comes to mind....gutless...just plain gutless

I don't think that Australian government need to condemn that. Muslims prefer shariah law to human right system, that's their own country and their right. However, it clearly show the non compatibility between islamic and western way of thinking.

The biggest mistake for me would to consider muslims just as a bunch of retarded which are late compared to the west. It's "just" another ideoleogy, people which support it may be wrong from our point of view, but it's not because they're dumb or retarded.

The slave trade ended 200 years ago.

    Islamic barbarism exists today.

The thread is not about Islam either - at least theoretically. Its about a law passed by the govt of Brunei. Yet I have not read a single proposal by you or anyone else here yet, suggesting what you want us to do about the law passed by the govt of Brunei. I read a lot of condemnation of Islam, and 'sharia law' and a lot of efforts to turn this into a wedge issue to divide progressives here in the states. Not one policy suggestion designed to target this brutal and inhumane law or the govt of Brunei that wrote it into existance.. Not one word about imposing sanctions, or United Nations Human Rights Council, which of course Trump administration has no interest in.

Now why on earth would someone so outraged about this law and the govt of Brunei as you want to sell yourself here as being, not make any effort to redirect this discussion away from all these tangents about how horrible Islam is and what progressives and gay activists here do etc, to discuss proposals to get this law changed or this govt of Brunei to back off. You have not even mentioned what the Trump administration has so far done. So far the Trump administration has issued a statement of 'concern' but it has refused to actually condemn the law. https://www.thedailybeast.com/mike-pompeo-and-us-government-wont-condemn-brunei-lgbt-stoning-law. The UK has condemned the law. The European Union has condemned the law, George Clooney has condemned the law.

The Trump administration has expressed 'concern' and urged the Brunei Govt to have encouraged Brunei to ratify and implement the United Nations Convention Against Torture, which it signed in 2015, and to sign, ratify, and implement the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.”

So now that I have lead this discussion away from Islam and how to turn this into a wedge issue in American politics lets see what you, ModCon propose our response should be to the first stoning under this law. Should it be a public response or back channels? Should we threaten sanctions, or organize an international boycott. Should we work to isolate this government diplomatically, or should we threaten to strife bomb specific targets like Majlis Mesyuarat Negara Brunei or its court houses? What do you want us to do?

I support the efforts by the our state dept to get Brunei to sign the UN accord against torture and endorse the statement of concern as a good first step. I support some quiet back channel diplomatic efforts initially to see if we can get the govt to back off actual implementation without forcing the Brunei govt to publicly lose face and we should contact internal human rights activists and more progressive voices inside the country, to see how we can help them be more impactful . These groups know what they need, and have a better understanding of what will work in Brunei.

Once Brunei actually starts sentencing citizens under this statute, we should propose a series of incremental sanctions and using more aggressive diplomatic efforts to isolate the regime until they comply with human rights norms. We have to remain sensitive to how our response may complicate the internal efforts of existing opposition within Brunei.

Now how about the rest of you discussing practical efforts to actually respond to the law and the govt that passed it.

I don't have to source that because I never wrote that, I just said that gay community are big defender of Islam. By the way you could nitpick about "you gonna prove that gay community support islam", okay, I don't have any opinion poll but :
_ Western liberal european country with pro gay agenda are the one with most muslims when eastern traditionnal european country are both islamophobic and homohobic.
_ I was interested in comics a time, and there was kind of intersectionnal gay/feminists which represented veiled women beside transgender "women" as part of the same fight.
_ Pro islam parti are often pro LGBT parti like Parti Socialiste in France.
_ The same for newspaper, pro LGBT newspaper like Le Monde and Liberation.

The same could be said in the USA, veiled candidates are democrats, democrats which are the biggest defender of LGBT agenda.

Slavery ended in 1962 in Saudi Arabia, in the 70's for Pakistan and Oman. The slave trade ended in 1815 with Vienna treaty and slavery started to be abolished a second time between 1840 and 1880 for most european countries. The abolishment was effective in what was then european colonies.
I don't count the abolishment of slavery of 1789 in France because Napoleon brought back slavery, neither the one of 1315 because it was limited to core french territory.

Thank you for taking the time to write such a reply, and I'll apologize in advance as I'm sure my reply will be dissatisfying.

Simply put, my intent is to focus on Islam and sharia. However, I can't complain if yourself and others wish to discuss what they'd like to see happen diplomatically in response to these laws. I wouldn't consider that off topic whatsoever.

The reason I choose to focus on Islam and sharia is due to my belief that so long as there are adherents of Islam - inspired terror, homophobia, mysoginy, fgm, hatred of infidels, etc. will follow. Islam is an 'ultra-conservative' ideology, too conservative for the likes of myself.

It's my belief that so long as there's Islam in the West, Islam will continue to manifest itself, if even on occasion, in the worst possible ways and will fail to assimilate to our Western ways. There's a multitude of instances to date, and surely more to come. The Bataclan, bus bombings in the U.K., Nice truck attack, Pulse Nightclub, and vast numbers of lesser known attacks.

It's my hope that progressives will slowly start to awake, though at this point I'm not sure what it'll take for this to happen. Certainly not talking about diplomatic efforts in regards to barbarism in other nations. It's not that I have no concern for those suffering elsewhere, it's that I'm a Westerner, and that's where my concern rests.
