Brazil's right wing thug of a President, Jair Bolsonaro, who has been called Brazil's Donald Trump, is threatening to wipe out all protection of indigenous land and hand it over to the agricultural ministry which will override constitutional protections of indigenous land and open up it all for foreign investment and development by multi-national corporations.

He has long said that he will forcibly integrate indigenous people and take away land rights and mused that "it is a shame that the Brazilian cavalry wasn't as forceful as the Americans in exterminating the indians."

The Brazilian Socialist party has filed suit in the supreme court to challenge the excesses of Bolsonaro's regime but the threat to indigenous rights and lands is clear from a president that scoffs at Brazil's constitution and is moving towards authoritarian, plutocratic rule over the nation as extreme, right-wing governments are want to do:

"Very worryingly, however, the government has also threatened to withdraw Brazilfrom the key international law on tribal and indigenous peoples’ rights, known as ILO Convention 169. This would further weaken indigenous rights and remove important independent, international scrutiny. Brazil ratified Convention 169 in 2002; it has since been used in rulings by judges and by public prosecutors who have the constitutional obligation to prosecute the state when it violates indigenous rights.

The government has invoked “national security” to trample over the constitutional rights of indigenous people.

"Brazil is the deadliest country in the world for environmental defenders, but violence directed at indigenous people can’t be explained simply as a battle over resources: in many cases, it is quite obviously hate crime. On the night of Bolsonaro’s election victory, for example, a health centre and a school were firebombed on Pankararu lands in the northeast of the country.

There are dozens of reports from all over Brazil of what sometimes seems like open warfare against indigenous communities. In an attempt to stifle NGOs who oppose his interests, Bolsonaro has issued a decree that government authorities can “supervise, coordinate, monitor and accompany the activities and actions of international organisations and non-governmental organisations in the national territory”. Environmental groups have been threatened with expulsion and Ricardo Salles, the new environment minister, has tried to suspend all government partnerships with NGOs in the country for three months. He believes that protected Amazon areas hold up “development” and is advocating commercial farming and mining on indigenous reserves, including those where uncontacted tribes live, which would almost certainly wipe them out."

The Bolsonaro regime will be a disaster for environmental protection of threatened rainforests and indigenous rights in Brazil.

I love how Progressives get mad when people take action. These people were voted in to fix the absolutely horrible problems down there.

I think they're crazy and so do you, but their problems are pretty crazy on their own.

Once again, from Progressives it's "DO what I say or I will call you evil!!!!"

No body likes this guy, but people are starting to like Progressives even less. Doing nothing hurts your own people very badly, which is what Progressives always leave out.

They basically scream "No, sit on your hands and do nothing or you are evil!"

It's why globally, Progressives have been losing EVERYWHERE. People are sick of them telling lies but actually doing nothing.

Brazil has been heading down the tubes ever since Rouseff was impeached in 2016, a move some saw as an institutional coup.

Fact is, that as a member of the BRICS, Brazil was perceived as a threat to the western leaning Brazilian elites that strive to be puppets of the US for their own enrichment. While Brazil is still nominally a BRICS member, it has completely changed its vector.

That change is amply demonstrated in Brazil's willingness to operate as a cat's paw in the US's endeavor to overthrow Maduro in Venezuela

Maduro tells Brazilian Army to resist ‘fascist rookie’ Bolsonaro’s orders to intervene in Venezuela

Venezuela will strongly retaliate against Brazil, the nation’s leader Nicolas Maduro has said, calling on the Brazilian Army to resist President Jair Bolsonaro’s attempts to intervene in its neighbor’s affairs.
The people of Venezuela stand united against the “threats of war and military intervention” voiced by the Brazilian right-wing leader, Nicolas Maduro said on Saturday. He blasted Bolsonaro as “a fascist rookie” and “a Hitler imitator,” and warned that Caracas will find ways to retaliate against any attacks coming from its neighbors.

Maduro also called on the Brazilian Army to “stop the madness” and thwart the attempts to create a conflict in the region.

A former army captain, Bolsonaro has never hidden his deep animosity towards the socialist government of Venezuela. Under his tenure, Brazil was among the first nations to openly back the opposition leader Juan Guaido as the ‘interim president’ during his standoff with Maduro.

ALSO ON RT.COMBolsonaro says Brazil & US focus on creating ‘rift’ within Venezuelan army to oust Maduro

In a radio interview earlier this week, the Brazilian leader said that he was working with US President Donald Trump to sow dissent within Venezuela’s armed forces in the hopes of ousting Maduro. He also said that he will consider helping Washington should the US launch a military invasion into Caracas.

His remarks were a departure from the ones previously made by Brazil’s vice president, who explicitly ruled out military intervention in Venezuela.

Bolsonaro the American stooge, serving them in anti-Venezuela propaganda and in making resources on indigenous lands available for the Americans.

Basically he's just rolled over... honestly it's embarrassing to watch

Well. Damn. He has a point, though he’s wrong about the US exterminating the Indians—we did worse, we made them wards of the state; and now they are the walking dead.

It’s nice to see the Rightwing openly advocate for and apologize for genocide.

Of course, if someone on the Left called them evil monsters for doing so, we’d get warnings from the Mods.

He said we did worse than genocide because there's still some alive and now dependent on the state.

First thought was, Glenn Greenwald better start looking for another country to move to, or this president's thugs will show up in the middle of the night, arrest him and turn him over to trump's DOJ to prosecute for being a genuine journalist. Even Greenwald's stance that the trump putin conspiracy was a hoax would not protect him.

My second thought was, in some sense looks like the new president is emulating what we have done with our new national security state, were one of the patriot styled acts the state relies upon, did away with the 1947 law that our gov't could not use propaganda(lies) on the american citizenry.

Greenwald, using Snowden's leaks showed americans they were being spied upon, without their knowledge. He may be in the same position as Assange before the neocons are through intimidating journalists, showing them they must stop revealing criminal actions of their own gov't, or else. That our so called journalists must join the crowd in our legacy media, and work for our national security state.

Of course the obama admin went after journalists, something like 9 times or so I heard this weekend from some source of info. But even then, would not try to get assange extradicted, because apparently the charge of being in a conspiracy with Manning, in hacking, must have lacked the evidence, and going after assange for other things, would be seen as an attack on our free press and free speech. Obviously the neocons in the trump admin want to end journalists revealing the criminality and bad acts of our gov't. Bolton, a great enemy of a constitutional republic even said assange should be executed. The president of brazil seems to want to emulate these guys in the trump admin.

We have presented the world with what we think is acceptable behavior, and should not be surprised that others, evil rulers, want to emulate us. Yep, we are a shining light upon a hill.

We have set such wonderful examples of how others should behave, and real journalists have revealed that. And our rulers, most of them, cannot tolerate it.

I think this line from your post gets right to the heart of the matter. Sort of what is happening with elites all over the western world - striving to be puppets of extreme right-wing regimes for their own enrichment. I mean.

So you are saying that extermination and genocide is better than democratic social policy.

The extreme right has become so depraved and psychopathic it is hardly even believable anymore.

Just more rape and pillage of land and resources by a criminal right-wing that has become so empowered by it's corruption of the political process that it thinks nothing can stand in it's way anymore. Look at the kind of leaders they can impose in their avarice to privatize everything. Trump is just the most comical but the ones just behind him are psychopathically deranged and dangerous.

I'm saying if the Indians had had any brains they would have demanded to be offered unconditional surrender, became Americans, and lived prosperous, productive, independent lives. Instead, they abandoned all reason, smothered themselves with superstitious primitive traditions, and chose to live as dependents of Uncle Sam. It is one of history's greatest tragedies for a people.

They had the courage to fight and hunt the buffalo, the bears, and the cougar, but not enough to embrace the future and let go of the past. Tragic.

Don't know if you heard this but Chris Hedges actually sued Obama for spying on Americans and imposing legislation to imprison Americans without process. He won in lower court but was overturned in SCOTUS if I rem, ember correctly.

Why we cannot rely on the democratic party to save us but need to embrace peoples movements to restore the constitution and the rights of ordinary citizens.

I think freedom of speech is in deep peril - but that is what happens in authoritarian proto-fascist states, unfortunately.

Racism? Over a historical fact? Seriously? Perhaps in Bizarro World.

It wasn't the white man's greed that destroyed the Indian nations; it was reason vs superstition. Superstition lost, as it should. The Indian leaders and witch doctors, refusing to refute their primitive superstitions and barbaric traditions, led their nations into ruin. And the Indian people have been paying for that faulty decision ever since.

Your right: This is one insane idea: "Honesty is the recognition of the fact that the unreal is unreal and can have no value, that neither love nor fame nor cash is a value if obtained by fraud—that an attempt to gain a value by deceiving the mind of others is an act of raising your victims to a position higher than reality, where you become a pawn of their blindness, a slave of their non-thinking and their evasions, while their intelligence, their rationality, their perceptiveness become the enemies you have to dread and flee—that you do not care to live as a dependent, least of all a dependent on the stupidity of others, or as a fool whose source of values is the fools he succeeds in fooling—that honesty is not a social duty, not a sacrifice for the sake of others, but the most profoundly selfish virtue man can practice: his refusal to sacrifice the reality of his own existence to the deluded consciousness of others."--http://aynrandlexicon.com/lexicon/honesty.html

All that psycho-babble about honesty, who the hell does she think she is? A rational being?

Nope. It's racism and it was the White man's murderous greed in the name if the lord that destroyed indigenous societies from Peru to Wounded Knee and everywhere in between.

Haven't the time or inclination to try and explain the history of colonialism to you.

Besides, I can't tell if you really believe what you are saying or just emboldened by the likes of the doofus in the WH to sit in your basement and type this type of bigotted nonesense.

    Either way, not my problem.

Well, hell, you love the tribal life, find a tepee, some friends, live in the Rockies. With regards to the Indians, just what have their tribal leaders given them? Cities? Skyscrapers? Spaceships? iPhones? Modern Medicine, a life worth living? Hell no. They have given them alcoholism, gambling, and suicide. Thanks a hell-of-a-lot, Sitting Bull. The civilized will always defeat the barbaric; that is until the civilized forget what it means to be civilized, e.g., the Romans, and devolve into the barbaric.

As an aside, I don't believe in anything; I know.
