Unfortunately few smokers are what would be considered "moderate".
The majority of people who smoke do not do so for the reasons that would be appropriate.

There's a certain truth to this of course, but some things are more prone to harm.

I think we could say that banana bread and opium are on opposite ends of the same spectrum.

I think in the past what you say was more true, at the current price of cigarettes, most are moderate smokers

depends if your a type 1 diabetic or not, or even to a lesser degree if you have a insulin insensitive metabolic disease and of course again.... the dose make the poison

When I referred to "moderate" smoking that does not really cause harm, I meant no more than one a day or five a week. How many smokers only do that? Not too many.

I disagree, 5-10 smokes a day would be moderate imo, anything over that and it's like getting too much sun... potentially bad for you

Well then that wouldn't be healthy.

If you smoke more than 2 or 3 a day, imo, there is definitely an addiction, it's not just "recreation". Particularly if you find yourself having to smoke every day.

a smoker still holds the title of longest living person... so hard to say

the body likes a certain amount of stress and even gets stronger for it, too much and it rebels, each person is different

yes, just like eating sugar every day or caffeine.... it can be an addiction

I suspect you may be a smoker in denial, FreshAir. Try cutting back to 2 a day and no more than 9 a week, and if you can't do that, you have an addiction.

some people may live longer do to the fact smoking relieves stress and for many causes them to eat less and not become obese, which is a huge issue right now in society

I have not smoked in years, as I already explained, I am allergic to the carpet glue the government forced cigarette makers to add to cigarettes

but I fear you are an anti-smoker that refuses to see the benefits along with the risks, I see both

I would recommend vaping over cigarettes though as cheaper and still get much of the stress relief effects, that technology just keeps getting better and better

Ha! read an interview with some 100 yr old woman ... She said God cursed her with longevity. I smoke, still in good health, not trying to live forever. 1 yr to retirement & 9 yrs to enjoy it it all I'm asking for.
CORRECTION: world's oldest woman 128 yrs old

I agree, but over time the brain chemistry adjusts to that nicotine and then becomes reliant on it.

In other words, 1 cigarette might make you 40% happier, but if you keep smoking that all the time then it might only make you 5% happier, and then if you don't have a cigarette you'll be 30% less happy than you would have been in the first place if you had never smoked.
Thus (like any addictive drug) it becomes an illusion that it makes you happier.

For many drugs, the brain becomes so reliant on it that it can cause severe withdrawal symptoms (sometimes even death) if you suddenly try to stop.
Whatever good you feel from cigarettes, you'll feel the complete opposite of that if you don't have one.

yep, it's kinda like the anti-meaters... I say to each, if you don't want to smoke... don't, if you don't want to eat meat.. don't

I love the ones that say meat causes cancer... yeah, cause cancer was such a big issue before we started reducing meat... it was the donuts that were causing the cancer ;) sugar fried in oil... wasn't until we increased sugar consumption that cancer became such a huge problem

yep, she smoked just shy of a 100 years of her life, and lived to 128 yrs old

non-smokers would love to claim that title so they could have bragging rights

really sucks for their message if they are saying something will shorten your life and the longest living person did it most of their life

the nicotine is not the issue, nicotine is in natural foods like potatoes and tomatoes too

now if you have high blood pressure it could be
and if you had low blood pressure it could be a benefit

I smoked my first cigarette in 1965 when I was 11. Snatched a half pack of Camels off the front seat of my dad’s ‘57 Ford Fairlane and headed to the woods with a couple friends. Coughed a little the first time but learned to like them in a short while. I started smoking for real at about 15 and have smoked those Camel straights ever since. In the ‘70s when you could buy a pack for .35 and smoke everywhere, elevators, offices, bars, restaraunts, movie theaters and doctors offices I got up to about 2 packs a day. Then, thankfully the laws made it so you could only smoke outside and Now I got it down to about 5 humps a day. They cost $11 a pack now but I still love ‘em. I just had a pet scan because of a tumor in my eye orbit which revealed that I have no cancer in my lungs or anywhere else. I have several friends who have recently died of lung cancer who never smoked at all. So 53 years later, I think I’ll go out on the front deck and huff a Camel....That Turkish Blend....

These foods have extremely low negligible levels.
Not sure why you even tried to bring that up.

if you eat them everyday, it adds up, the point is, nicotine is not the issue, thus why many have moved to vaping

personally I think most of the bad health effects of smoking come from the over smoking... which causes excessive coughing, the excessive coughing is the issue

when they tested on animals they put them in glass cages where they were basically stressed like crazy in a smog of smoke... not realistic at all, the stress alone from that would harm their health

Well not claiming smoking ain't bad for your health. Didn't let my kids smoke either. But it's a personal choice, and for some people longevity doesn't hold much appeal.

nor am I, in fact I said that, I am saying there are benefits and risks and the risks have been over exaggerated and the benefits under stated

and I agree, personal choice, one of my adult children smokes, the other does not

when I die, I hope it's a heart attack in my sleep and once i can no longer feed and bath myself, I am ready for that heart attack

I saw that ... and certainly quitting is very stressful ... but beneficial? I'm gonna remain skeptical on that.

ironically smoking and owning a car in the old days was a couple of the things that motivated teens to get jobs

quality of life is as important as quantity

one thing is certain, we are all gonna die at some point

the cost of the smokes nowadays hurts the poor more then the smokes themselves

    I shoot it.

    Drugs are fun.

And then I celebrate with a slice of dead cow.

The difference is that somebody eating meat at the table next to a vegan is not going to effect them at all. Somebody smoking at the table next to me can effect me.

you can choose not to eat at a restaurant that allows smoking

you are basically saying you want the law to force the owner to only offer what you want

I disagree. I think smoking should not be allowed in public places. Private, I don't care. Any business open to the public is a public place. That said, it should be at state/local level. The feds have no say in this matter.
