The US is no longer one nation. The grand experiment has failed. Trump has also demonstrated that a person willing to severely abuse power, can defeat the system of checks and balances. So it is time to end this nightmare and allow States to opt out of the US.

I consider this preferable to a civil war.

For those who oppose the right of secession, by what rationalization do you justify holding States hostage?

Is the US like hell or the mafia; once you're in you can never leave?

    Nice spin.

You realize if we split along party lines your Democrat union woukd be a very small and spread out union.

As i described in Another thread. You'd get most of the west coast from i5 to the ocean
The i 25 corridor in Colorado the northeast seaboard and a strip along the upper mid west and Miami.

The rest of the country is pretty much red

Maybe a pocket or two of blue but they'd make up for us releasing southwest oregon which is deeply red

There is no right to secession. But I support the might and the fight of secession. If a state or group of states has enough might and enough fight they can secede and then if they can win militarily they can be independent.

    Winning is the only thing.

But the odds are far against those who secede.

I agree with Jay Runner that there isn't any right to secession. Although I agree with your statement that secession is preferable to civil war. I hope it never gets to that point but you lefties are crazy so who knows? What's your dream version of breaking up the United States?

The rest of the vacant land is pretty much red you mean.

Red states would quickly starve without the welfare from the blue states.

The West Coast as a country will be the 5th or 6th largest economy in the world. We have a wealth of natural resources, especially water. We are leaders or near the top for just about every agricultural product, including dairy and cattle. We have the lion share of high tech and high tech companies. We are the drivers of academia with many of the best Universities. We are leaders in many sectors of manufacturing; esp to include aerospace and military technologies. We have key military bases and resources including nuclear weapons. And we have 1200 miles of coastline where we control all major ports on the Pacific side.

And most importantly of all, we will NEVER have to worry about poisonous snakes like trump, sessions, or total nuts like bannon, ever playing a role in our government again. The West Coast won't have to struggle for freedom from the tyranny of the radical christian oppressors in red states, who elect people opposed to freedom. the Constitution, and core American values. They can then run their little states as theocracies, as all white, or whatever they want. Just stay the hell out of our lives.

Lol. I remember just a few years ago Republicans in Texas were mocked for wanting to be their own country. So quick the tables can turn.

The US is better off as one country and these questions were all answered in tue 1850s.

By and large the US, red and blue alike, is too fat and lazy to go to war with one another. They are just going to say mean things on the internet.

    Ahh...so you are pro secession.

Would you still be pro secession if a Democrat wins in 2020?

Insanity. how has Trump abused power more than any other president? You can't have states just opt out, the rest of the country has to have a say.

For me, it depends on the reason for seceding. If you have your own ethnic group, your own language, your own religion that is different from and distinct from that of the rest of the country you are seceding from, then yes, I support the right of secession. If you're seceding because you don't like the outcome of an election, too bad. You don't get to secede just for that. As for California, it would succeed for a short time, but it wouldn't be long before it started to look like Venezuela. The right-wing nature of the rest of the country keeps California on the sane side of the socialism/capitalism divide, but if it seceded, it would soon adopt socialistic measures wholesale, and the wealth in the state would flee elsewhere in no time.

Pre-Civil War, there was a right to seccesion. That was revoked by combat.

I think the US would be a much better place if CA seceded, and it seems like they think so as well.

Sounds like a complicated issue, depends on the situation.

Also I think one state trying to break off by itself is different from a large number of states in a certain region trying to break off.

I think the US would be a much better place if we had never gotten to the point where even the idea of CA seceding was on the table.

Wouldn't be surprised if Mexico tried to claim them back.
Among the younger demographic, half the population is practically Latin American now.

Don't you mean the IRS? They don't want to lose power or money. If you understood that, you wouldn't even ask this question. Why do you think that the USA was designed the way it runs now? Read up on it. You'll catch on. The Civil War wasn't about slaves, though I am very happy they were freed and slavery was ended.

The feds wanted all the power. Originally, the name states meant, countries. Each state was to be it's own country, like Germany, France, Britain, etc. The federal government was to be small.

Lots of bases in CA. But with no federal money coming in and no federal civil service checks coming in and federal troops pulled out can CA support them.

Thats madness. Could you imagine needing a passport to travel to California. To not be able to work there. Do you know what would happen to the price of many foods or technology without California? Not to mention what would happen to the many conservatives in California without a mitigating factor on their laws? California and the US are both way better off as one country.

California produces so much agriculture. The price of much of which would double without it. We'd be importing technology too.

Not to mention freedom of movement between California and the rest of the US. Which is extremely important to me.

Other than not really liking their politics, what's the benefit of them not being in the US?

    "California produces so much agriculture."

Not when the original flow of the Colorado is restored to the United States.

That seems like another reason that California and the US go better together. Where else is the Colorado river going to be used for the agriculture anywhere close to that of the central valley? Arizona? Nevada? I don't think so.

Other than political disagreements, I can't see how either California or the US is better off without one another. Same goes for Texas or any other state that wants to be its own country.
