Perhaps the US creates it's own threats in order to justify it's own aggression and hegemony over the world. China is a competitor. And yes, it's government is authoritarian and repressive - but so is the US and becoming more so. Difference is, China is mostly geared to economics and generally does not tell other countries what to do nor does it attack other countries to overthrow governments they don't like.
I'm not going to use my IT quota, but America was not divided on Trump sticking it to China over trade cheating. America is divided over tariffs on other countries and Trump using tariffs for non-trade fights.

If we went through American history with the same microscope do you think we would not find similar instances - just in your struggle for civil rights alone. But you had some of the bloodiest labour battles in the world and imprisoned thousands of people for pacifism and subversion - in peace time!!!! It is a very American thing to decry dictatorship and repression in enemies while ignoring the same in regimes you find useful and being completely unwilling to honestly explore your own history.
