Reminds me of this:

Rendezvous with Rama is a science fiction novel by British writer Arthur C. Clarke first published in 1973. Set in the 2130s, the story involves a 50-by-20-kilometre (31 by 12 mi) cylindrical alien starship that enters the Solar System. The story is told from the point of view of a group of human explorers who intercept the ship in an attempt to unlock its mysteries. (per Wikipedia)

 

I always thought it was an old White Owl cigar.

 

It has been all but confirmed to be a Comet due to pictures as it left our system that showed it to be reddish brown in color. Experiments have shown that the ices when bombarded with radiation create a Tholin coating over ice as predicted and observed in terrestrial comets. This also eliminates the outgassing that creates tail.

 

It sheds its' camouflage nearer its' target.

Since no one has actually "Seen" it I suppose that might be camouflage....especially considering we didn't even notice it until it was heading away from us.

 

The presumption any advanced civilization would send a physical manifestation of its existance across the galaxies is human vanity in another of it’s forms. If they ‘come’ they’ll be here without us even knowing until it’s too late. Why would they allow a species as blood thirsty as ours to spew out into the galaxies to again unleash colonisation on a cruel scale? On the other hand of you really want to wander into bizarre speculation maybe we’re just a potenital food crop? We might then see some justice handed out for all those crayfish we cooked alive.

 

Highly likely they would find something more tasty and chewy....not much meat on these bones.

 

It is certainly of extraterrestrial origin. It just did get here by intelligent effort.

I very much doubt any even slightly advanced being would send a huge spaceship across the galaxy when a micro unit would do a better job and be virtually invisible. Even we puny humans can create atomic sized machines so they probably have something much smaller and better. The energy required alone makes smaller significantly better.

 

How do you know they even have tastebuds? Why assume anything about such beings? If they ever do arrive I doubt they’ll be anything like our science fiction writers have imagined. In fact we may not even recognise what they are until it’s too late.

 

Why would it require 'intelligent effort' to get here? Scientists have been predicting for decades that random bits of extra-solar debris were likely to pass through our solar system (and all other star systems) fairly frequently - in astronomical terms as opposed to human life spans.

So we finally 'luck out' and spot one that was big enough and travelled close enough to be detected.

It was not travelling at a particularly high speed, conducted no course changes that were not explainable and gave off no thermal emissions (and powered space craft have to) - its temperature was the same as that of the solar background. Finally its surface composition was similar if not identicle to 'domestic' comets. Ergo it was a piece of space rubble.

If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck it IS a duck. Not the phoenix from Harry Potter.

 

Any technologically advanced race is going to explore it's neighborhood, and there are really only two efficient ways to do that: astronomy and probes. So yes, advanced aliens, if they exist, will be sending out "physical manifestations" (i.e., probes), just like we do.

Perhaps...it's a ghost ship...which originated from intelligent species but has now been dead for hundreds or thousands of years...

Let's remember that traversible worm holes, string theory, m-brane, etc. are all outside of experimental science which is what is generally meant by "science".

They are in the realm called "theoretical phyisics" where ideas can not be tested today and in various cases don't enjoy much support.

 

Well, they ARE science, but they are not theories, since they cannot yet be tested. They are hypotheses - some more supported than others. And if man were meant to fly, he'd have wings.

Physics is not only science, it is the root science. Everything is a derivative of physics.

The key point is that they cannot be ruled out. The speed of light speed limit cannot be taken as absolute. As with all theories in physics, it is only valid within its domain.
