There's one article about land grabs in Joburg I found after searching but the videos also contain footage taken by ordinary people showing cars parked next to the road and people simply claiming areas that are not occupied.

Anyway I think @Doug1943 makes a fair point. The unwinding of South Africa was bound to happen at some point, so it seems that some planning to leave should have been in the back of every White person's mind.

Re the leaving, you're not thinking...I'll say it again, not everyone CAN leave, not everyone WANTS to leave, AND most importantly, leaving is not the only option. I fully grant that not everyone could leave in 95, but 20 years is enough time to put together a plan, and more importantly come to the determination that there isn't a future there.

As far as what appears to be a resurrection of the idea of Bantustans, that would have been a great idea...in the 1980's. It seems like the national government would never allow that now. That would lead to an extremely bloody civil war I would think.

I believe in pessimism of the intellect, and optimism of the will.

That means, for things we cannot avoid, let's hope for the best and throw ourselves into the struggle to make them the best.
Furthermore, there are things which will be true in the long run, but which may not be true in the short run. The course of true love never did run smooth, so also the course of human history.

I hope that in the long run, sheer economic necessity will meld the human species together, because co operation, over time, pays more than conquest. Someone, a few thousand years ago, realized that instead of trying to kill all the adult males in the next village and carry off their good stuff, which was dangerous and in any case a one-off, it would be better to swap our arrowheads for their pots. This didn't mean the end of war, but it did give us a competing model for how to get ahold of good pots and arrowheads.

But ... you have to take note of the short term. Rationally, once Hitler was in power, he should have behaved as most German Jews thought he would -- make nasty noises at them, pass some symbolic laws, and privately make sure they stayed and carried on making Germany rich. They would have built him an atomic bomb if he had done that. But the heart has its reasons, of which reason knows nothing.

We all hoped that Mr Mandela would prove not just to be an extraordinary human being -- one of the towering figures of the 20th Century -- but broadly representative of his people. Then, after the Black elite had been let in on the goodies, and the rest of the Black population entered on to the path of modernity, mainly via decent educational opportunities, and some informal affirmative action in employment, South Africa would prove to be a mighty economic engine that would draw the rest of sub-Saharan Africa up with it. That this was not a completely crazy idea is shown by Botswana -- the hope was that South Africa would become a giant Botswana (minus the very high HIV infection rate there, a cruel accident of history).

And maybe it still will. Perhaps as the Chinese buy the place up, a few million rand slipped into the right hands will keep the elite there from cutting their own throats and driving out or killing the people who keep the electricity running and the flush toilets working. Maybe they can be prevented from turning the place into another Zimbabwe. All decent people hope so.

But if you're an ordinary Black South African, the idea that this was your country, that it's not fair that these white Europeans came and took all the good things, and still have them ... despite having behaved atrociously towards you or your ancestors, without ever being punished for it ... that's a powerful feeling, and there are votes to be had in appealing to it.

So post-Apartheid South Africa was an experiment.

Whether or not you, as a white or colored South African wanted to take part in this experiment was, of course, a personal decision, and probably affected by how much property you owned which couldn't be converted to money, your own attachment to the land you grew up in, your own belief that your nice Black servants couldn't possibly butcher you in the night...

Of course white liberals and Lefties in the West have heads stuffed with idealistic nonsense about the ANC and Africans in general, along with the desire to watch white colonialists suffer. If they had read Rian Malan's My Traitor's Heart they would know just how things really work in South Africa, behind the scenes.

A previous wife told me that, within her family, -- many of whose ancestors and relatives perished in the Holocaust -- they had a saying, apparently inspired by the behavior of relatives in Berlin who refused to leave when the could have : "Forget about the Grand Piano!" (Apparently these people had a beautiful grand piano which they couldn't bring themselves to sell. The grand piano is no doubt still there -- the Nazis were cultured people -- but its owners went up the chimneys.)

Of course, some form of national self-determination, a federation of self-governing nations in the area, with each tribe having its own, might be a solution. Zionism for everyone, or, to sell it in a way that the ANC elite might like, consistent Leninism on the National Question. But it takes a very advanced liberal democracy to concede the right of self-determination -- the Swedes let the Norwegians go, the Czechs let the Slovaks go, the British will let Scotland go and the Canadians will let Quebec go. Maybe the Spanish will be civilized enough to cut the Basques and Catalans loose.

But I don't see it happening in Africa. In the long term, the peoples of this continent will be pulled into modernity, just as we all were. Capitalism is inexorable. But in the short term, my advice would be to go to someplace where modernity has already conquered, a place where most of the inhabitants look like you, or at least don't harbor a burning resentment against you added to a desire to get ahold of your property.

 

We've seen this movie play out before with the Russian aristocrats after the revolution, German Jews, White farmers in Zimbabwe. Get out while the getting is good, to delay could be fatal. History has shown them the end game.

 

There is truth in what you say. However, the writing was on the wall for all to see. I would have left if possible—the Afrikaners are not militarily or politically powerful enough to overthrow the government; and even if they could, I doubt they are philosophically advanced enough to create a truly free nation.

When I moved from Ukraine to the US in early 00s I went to high school in MN where I had two classmates from SA - beautiful tall girls. I met them in 11th or 12th grade. Great sense of humor and good personalities. I hope they are doing well, we didn’t stay in touch. I didn’t realize their parents were running from black oppression.

Well anything can happen I suppose, our present age is proof enough of that, but I don't see much chance of winning a political battle to partition the country. An actual military solution may be possible, but the cost will be extremely high.
