Well, people are still being killed for being gay. They've got a hit list in Russia.

I tried to watch the video and I agree it was pretty . . . interesting. Most certainly not my cup either, I skipped through it quite quickly. I know I listened to some rough music as a kid, black sabbath, judas priest, etc, what was I thinking?

There's a reason the disparaging term "PDA" arose, and it had/has nothing to do with homophobia or Russia. It's offputting. That's why you see it rarely. The reason it's offputting to the majority, who get to collectively decide what is good manners, is that it is disrespectful to other people and, and I think this is different, makes us ashamed that the participants don't have respect for themselves. Certainly these musicians weren't making an amorous point, but a political one.

I've never been a fan of PDA either, matter of fact, but this is about much more than mere PDA. Especially when it's just a kiss on stage.

Is that all it was? I thought it was a political point.

Surely the only question worth asking is: will this help, or hinder, the cause of gay rights in Russia? (The same question was asked, for women's rights, with respect to '***** Riot' some years ago.)

Russia culturally, with respect to gay rights, is where Mississippi was fifty years ago with this difference: it's not embedded in a more advanced culture in the same way Mississippi was embedded in the US. But it is embedded in what we may call world -- and first of all Western -- democratic/liberal culture. Russia's leaders don't want to be seen as white Africans. The Russian intelligentsia are embarrassed by things like physical attacks on gays, even though some of them support Putin as a defender of Russia's national interests. (I can't prove this, it's just my impression from Russians I know.)

What this event says to ordinary Russians, I fear, is this: give these gays an inch, and they'll take a mile. It would be a great victory for Russia to advance to the place Europe was for a long time, in which discreet homosexual activity was tolerated even though legally criminal. Then came de-criminalization, as public opinion slowly changed. And so on. I don't think this event advanced the cause of Russia's gays at all.

Yes, so the need is FAR GREATER - obviously. Yet these fakes and record spruikers find nice soft targets, who need no help in that arena. It's like rich celebrities donating money to other rich celebrities, while poor people starve to death at their feet.

Not really into their music . . . at least since high school . . . but that's funny. Sometimes all you can do is troll a bunch of thugs. It isn't much, but at least it tweaks the noses of authoritarian trash.

Soft targets? Why not protest injustice and oppression where it is relatively safe to do so?

I don't imagine Saudi Arabia would even allow Rammstein in to perform to begin with, all things considered.

That's the point. I've never heard of any western pop-rock act touring Saudi Arabia, and they certainly wouldn't allow a controversial show like Rammstein. So why bring that up as an argument? Doesn't make sense.
Granted, I know that Dutch metal band Within Temptation played in Dubai once, but their stage show is harmless and Dubai is not Saudi Arabia. Iraq and Afghanistan, as someone suggested, are failed states and completely dysfunctional, so no person in their sane mind would try to tour those places with a major music production.
I find the fact that 'metal band performing in Russia' has turned into a debate about Muslims and Islam pretty meaningless.
Whether that man/man kiss on stage did the lesbian&gay community in Russia a favour can be argued. Probably not. I for one see it as a personal statement by the band, nothing more.

That's nothing compared to the stage act for a song called Bück Dich.

    Beware when googling.

Rammstein is really a toss-up. You're either gonna get amazing displays of high tech and/or pyrotechnic effects ...or you get BDSM themed homoerotica.

    Ech...

Im glad I dont speak german. I've been told a lot of their music is rendered unenjoyable by understanding what they're singing about.

Ah yes, and the lies of course, and why not. Russia should do what 'America' is doing, and offend its people by propagating the gay life style with obscene parades - and call it freedom instead of degenerate - which it is

So tell me Durandal, is your problem Russiaphobia or Christianphobia? Just curious!

Propagating by any group including religious ones is not allowed in Russia, so why would the gay/lesbian or any other community have a problem? Me thinks you're reading too much Western propaganda.

Because if it's 'safe' it means there's no urgent need. Obviously!

Until all these 'activists' start protesting abuse of women and LG people in the ME (and anywhere the Religion of Peace continues to persecute same), they reveal themselves to be liars. They don't care at all.

Are you saying there wouldn't be physical attacks on gays flaunting themselves in certain areas in the US? So why make mention of Russia, especially when any attacks would be miniscule compared to the attacks in Kiev and Poland.

Anyway that's not the point. The point is that if something is offensive to people then why is it being done, unless it's done with the intent to offend. And if the intent is to offend, then the gays shouldn't be upset when people respond in a way that will not be to their liking.

You're Jewish Ronstar and I'm sure you know that the Jews kept a low profile when they came here as did all the other immigrants. They didn't rub their differences in the faces of the Americans or they wouldn't have survived very long - nor would this country have survived if people weren't pressured to assimilate..

Because people who genuinely care will OBVIOUSLY go where the need is, not where there is no need.

Protesting in Poland etc is the equivalent (again!) of claiming to care about starvation and then giving food to fat people.
