Here we go again, folks! The last bar was condemned so rented this joint pretty cheap. Enjoy!

Belly up to the bar and take a load off y'all! This is the place to enjoy a break from politics. Free jukebox. Plenty of hot coffee and cold beer with a little hard stuff for those times ya just gotta have a snort! Food when we're in the mood.

Talk about anything EXCEPT POLITICS and we'll all get along just fine. :hippie:

Everybody is welcome here. Ladies drink free, gentlemen watch your wallets. Pull up a barstool and join the fun! :alcoholic:

One of my 10 rules for a happy life is to get off of the interstate at every opportunity. The country is loaded with quirky (and interesting) towns, businesses, and people. A few years ago we were in Maine traveling the back roads between Augusta and Rockport when we ran across a general store with a big sign advertising GUNS, WEDDING GOWNS, COLD BEER. As it turns out, the wedding gowns part is not a gimmick. We talked to the dress makers and they told us they do quite a business. From what I could could see their dress inventory was comparable to their gun inventory, which was impressive (this being rural Maine where the natives subsist by selling firewood and ammo to one another). So if you're ever in the neighborhood and you need a gun, wedding gown or cold beer . . .

Note: I'm sad to report the sign has been "upgraded" to a more modern look. Here's an article with pictures of the old and new ones. Decide for yourself.

Mighty quiet in here. Weekend was nice, except for the 1500% humidity. Ah yes, August in the South.

It was fun watching the hummingbirds hip-check each other off the feeders....

Speakin' of which, I stayed up past my bed time Friday night drinking beer and cooking Cherokee Purple salsa while I watched my DVD of Apocalypse Now. I had forgotten what a great movie that is and the salsa turned out awesome...

As it turns out, my wife has the book that movie is based on - Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness. For some reason I thought the book was set in Central America (Nicaragua, or something) but it's set in 1890s colonial Congo and Kurtz is an ivory trader instead of a special ops officer. It's a tiny little book - about 100 pages - so I'm thinking about giving it a read. While the setting is different and the characters are a bit different the thrust of the book and movie appear to be about the same - what happens to "civilized" men in uncivilized environments and all the contradictions and hypocrisy that arise. Not exactly what I would consider light summertime reading, but I'm hoping it will be like Boris Pasternak's Doctor Zhivago where the novel is better than the film. Mercifully, Heart of Darkness is a lot shorter.

The humidity was oppressive in our neck of the woods, too. It's probably the only thing I don't like about living in the South.

I saw something rather amusing yesterday afternoon, myself. I heard the little mongrels who live down the road raising all kinds of hell out in our field and I look outside to see them running as fast as their tiny legs would carry them after a doe who was loping along in first gear taunting them. She could have lost them in a heartbeat if she wanted to but I guess she wanted to have a little fun with them. I couldn't help but laugh at those dogs.

    Cheap local entertainment!

We are limited in the dog department around here, so the deer feel rather safe. Almost too safe. Saw the wee ones very early this year, I think I posted a picture the old Bar thread. They still panic when we roll in on the gravel road though, sorta. Run 5 feet then glare at us, lol.

We are heavy on the wildlife here. Just the way I like it.

    Gotta love it. :D

Same here, although it's a little dangerous to be wandering around the property at night or out in the woods without a firearm. Black bears migrate through these parts with their cubs and I've run into some stout bucks who weren't afraid to stand their ground around their harems. Two years ago we got a special treat when a bald eagle hung around our place for a couple of days pecking at some dead animal. The nearest river is 4 miles away so that was totally unexpected.

Got out and picked some pokeberries today and put them in my freezer. I have 2 rather large bushes nearby and should get some good stain out of it. May have to use vinegar to set the color. Right now it is a reddish purple. I am building a pirates chest out of old heart pine and would like to see what a purple stain on wood will look like. Stain.... wait overnight....apply linseed oil.

Call me crazy but I think a purple stain on wood would look nice. I'd be interested to hear how that turns out.

Ya me too. I have been taking my time with it. More work but less money. Finding hardware for it has been a pain.

Speaking of hot & humid... had a little shower move thru downtown just before I got off work. Not a cloud In the sky, but felt like 108 degrees in Houston. Stifling hot :(
