Madison's original draft was: "The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed; a well armed and well regulated militia being the best security of a free country."

The second clause is dependent on the first, and the first is independent of the second. While the order of the reading was reversed, the militia clause still remains a weak dependent upon the right of the people clause.

The first phrase (...Militia...) of the current amendment does not limit the second phrase. It's participle "being" simply emphasizes the reason for the amendment to be in the BoR. Imagine if the Constitution were to say "The car tires being flat, the right of the people to walk shall not be infringed". Would it make sense then that if the car tires were filled, Congress could infringe upon the right to walk? No one denies that the people have the right to walk, but if the car tires are flat, then people are just going to have to walk. Similarly, the people have the right to keep and bear arms, and if the militia needs to be called out, the people will need their arms.

Even left wing legal scholars like Lawrence Tribe have finally admitted that the right to bear arms is an individual right.

"An appeal of the case, U.S. v. Emerson, begins with the filing of briefs in
the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit in New Orleans Friday.

The case, which is likely to be argued next January or February, is
    unfolding
as liberal scholars such as Harvard's Laurence Tribe, who has long been
hostile to the individual-rights argument, have begun to move toward the
    NRA's position.

"The real-world consequences (of the Texas case) could be enormous," says
Carl Bogus, a specialist on the Second Amendment at Roger Williams Law
    School
    in Bristol, R.I.

If the lower-court ruling is upheld, "it would stand the law on its head,"
Bogus says. It would destroy Congress' ability to create gun control laws.
Anyone arrested under current (gun control) laws could argue they're
unconstitutional. This is not just an academic exercise."

The renewed debate over the Second Amendment's meaning comes as recent
shootings in Atlanta, Los Angeles and Littleton, Colo., have increased
pressure for new gun control laws. This week, authorities in Los Angeles
    took
the unprecedented step of banning sales of guns from the nation's largest
    gun show."
USA TODAY, Case could shape future of gun control., The Second Amendment establishes a right to possess firearms. The question is: Is it an individual right or a military necessity?, By Richard Willing, 08/27/99.

Most gun control laws are unconstitutional.

I am no fan of RINO McConnell, but the kind of election cycle slander now directed against him no longer has any impact.
Ordinary Americans have developed an immunity to election related Fake News.

There is no real news anymore, a story here and there with small elements of truth maybe.

Just look at what happened after the norm of two parent families became the new norm of single parent families.

If you cannot figure that one out then no one can help you see the light.

Every level of government should now be encouraging Americans to start carrying handguns to keep the peace.

It is amazing how hard our political elite works to evade obvious common sense solutions to the problems they create.

There is Fake News on Fox, but Fox is more balanced which makes it more fair.
Even the hard Left has access to Fox News.

That is why most ordinary Americans know that Fox is the most credible MSM source right now.

MEDIAPOST, The BBC is the most trusted TV news brand, followed closely by Fox News and PBS, according to an analysis created for Research Intelligencer by Brand Keys.

Bwahahahahaha!!! Keep telling yourself that, kiddo. Just because a large portion of the populace swallows the Fox Kool-Aid doesn't make what they spout credible, or even factual.

Left media is a joke and a large part of the problem in this country, stoking racism and partisanship.

    That was rejected.

Some like to pretend that the Founding Fathers meant nothing whatsoever by their ablative absolute, that they merely threw it in on a whimsy, and that the remaining portion of the Amendment would mean exactly the same as if it were not there.

That is very silly, of course. It there is one thing the Founding Fathers were not it was frivolous. They did not festoon the Bill of Rights with meaningless phrases.

Fox News is far more credible than its competition because it allows the radical left to voice its opinions.
Ordinary Americans will always prefer Fair and Balanced to non stop left wing crazy.
    Even AOC almost gets it.

"Ocasio-Cortez has squared off on Twitter against such varied media outlets as the New York Post, The Washington Post, Politico, the Hill newspaper, CBS News, Fox News and Glenn Beck's BlazeTV for statements she deemed offensive, inaccurate or just tone deaf."
WASHINGTON POST,When it comes to calling out the news media, Ocasio-Cortez has some things in common with Trump, BY Paul Farhi,February 13, 2019.

Of course she is wrong about Fox News where she will always be welcome. :)

On the day that the Second Amendment was ratified and may years after, private citizens owned warships.

    So there is that...

    It was reversed.

Some people like to create strawmen and ad hominem about other people. You are not engaging honestly here by claiming that I "pretend" anything. My post made it clear the reasons.

You, however, are quite frivolous when it comes to supporting your unsupported argument.

You can scoff and deny, if you need to, but he majority of Americans who are opposing the special interests in demanding that their elected representatives confront the permissiveness that results in the horrific level of firearm carnage in the US are not being "frivolous."

Progress will be slow, but sure.

Scoff and deny what, your indirect personal attacks? I simply posted a rebuttal to your argument, and you called me, by extension, "frivolous" and whimsical. Intellectually dishonest cowards do that and then scoff and deny when called out on it.

We are talking about the Constitution and the 2nd amendment, not the "majority of Americans." Moving the goalposts, yet another fallacy.

Moralizing busybodies never give up on their eagerness to force individuals to conformity.

Your resorting to that sort of demeaning hyperbole is unproductive.

The United States has, by far, the highest rate of gun deaths among developed nations.

The United States has, by far, the highest rate of civilian gun ownership among developed nations.

The majority of Americans support confronting the permissiveness to reduce the tragic level of firearm carnage in the United States.

Such regulation in the interest of public safety comports with the US Constitution.
