The reason why I started this thread on the "Latest U.S. & World News" forum instead down below on the PF "Military" sub forum was because I solved the problem with the Boeing 737 MAX.

Have the pilots flying the Boeing 737 MAX instead of a computer.

In fact have pilots flying all Boeing and Airbus commercial airliners.

The biggest threat to mankind is the Silicon Valley.
Humans are being dumbed down by technology and sooner than later the human will not be able to think and perform simple task using his brains and limbs.

Soon there will be billions who will not be able know how to drive a car or be able to turn on the lights in their homes using a light switch.

Already there are young millennials and Generation Zers who can't even carry on a conversation without texting.

Google is already working on developing a smart toilet !!!
    What can go wrong ?
California also plans to use smart toilets to be able to tax your poop !

A top loader washing machine fills, agitates, and pumps to empty. The digital circuits and readouts are just going to cost money now and later. Those frills cost money. Go for economy and reliability, use click dials.

Actually I still have an analog phone for emergencies.

I live in California and when there's a big earthquake cell phones become useless because everyone is calling someone or texting "Did you feel it" overloading the system and crash.

Big quakes usually cause power failures and analog phones don't require electricity from the grid to operate.

Satellite internet service really sucks but when there is no electricity, if you have a generator you can still access the internet.

When it comes to high end stereo sound systems, it has to have vacuum tubes.

But they aren't cheap and high quality has never been cheap.

If you don't have the money you can always buy a used McIntosh.

Touch screens are a hazard around dirt and water....Plus those damn cushions under the mat padding really can't take consistent poking...Like your eye...Not to mention the liquid crystal display is fragile...

I'm dumbed down to the concept that the person in command of a ship is suppose to bring it back in good shape in war, so I don't expect problems in peace to remain unsolved.

Have you taken in account of Obama's Moron Officers Corps ?

I read both the investigation findings on the USS McCain and the USS Fitzgerald and a lot of blame went to those young junior officers who were commissioned as officers in Obama's PC Navy, Moron Officers Corps.

Well there's a lot of pressure on continually moving forward ito technology, to have and be the most advanced at ....... (insert whatever here). Technology have opened up many things to many people, ie Windows - computing made easy for ordinary people but when it comes to aircraft, ships, vehicles clearly much more caution is needed than what is currently exercised.... I think the day when we don't drive ourselves anymore will be a very sad day.

How dumb do you have to be to not understand: "Don't **** up the ship?"

All of the branches of the military has some serious issues especially with training.

Today the U.S. Navy no longer turn out real sailors. (seamen)

What they end up with after basic training are young men and women who have been indoctrinated in political correctness. Then these young wannabe sailors attend A School.

Here's the problem the Navy discovered back around 2010, sailors no longer study from printed manuals but instead the manuals are in a PDF form and anytime anyone reads something on a computer screen, their reading speed drops by 25% and their comprehension of what they read drop just as much or even more.

Ok and yet the training division command failed to rectify the problem. In 1982 when I enlisted political correctness was around then also yet it didn't stop me from being able to do my duty or perform my job..

Got to agree about touchscreens. They're fine for certain things, like ordering kiosks and a vehicle "infotainment" system, but I wouldn't want one for anything very critical. I definitely wouldn't want one on a war machine, where a complex and fragile interface such as that one only poses hindrances and risks of failure.

I've seen that Tesla uses a big touchscreen for almost every function controllable by the driver, foregoing all of the usual dials and buttons, and I would pass it up for something else for that reason alone.

    I enlisted and served from 69 - 71.

The New Left hadn't adopted cultural-marxism yet and there was no political correctness in the military.

We were trained for one freaking mission to wage war and kill commies.

There was some social engineering of the military back then, McNamara's Moron Corps. (Project 100,000)

To dumb to be drafted but you were allowed to enlist in the name of PC social engineering.

Seems the Navy is learning a lesson about two things. One, non reputable sources, and two, durability of fragile IT. On the first, if you have manual controls, you also don't have anything that can later be checked to understand the inputs that one put into the system ( or not) that caused the ship to crash. Second, touch screens aren't durable, and often lead to improper entries. So both are bad. Looks like the Navy decided CYA was way more important than actual ship safety..

Part of being in the Navy is you don't crash the ship. That's a do thing and I'm not so sure training is involved. It's like all those other rules in the military, like don't crash the tank, jeep, anything that belongs to them.

When Reagan activated the four Iowa class battleships they were brought up to modern times. nuclear tip Tomahawk cruise missiles, counter battery radars, high tech communications, etc.

But there were some technology that couldn't be used on the Iowas's, that the overpressure from the 16" guns would damage these systems even those that were installed deep with in the ship.

If you were to put a three gun 16" turret on the deck of a Nimitz class aircraft carrier and fired a three gun salvo, the overpressure of the guns would destroy most of the radars and other electronics and after firing a few salvos, the carriers superstructure island would basically be crushed.

What was the main purpose why battleships and gun cruisers had teak decks ?
The teak decks helped to absorb the overpressure when they fired their large main guns.

    Cultural-marxism is real.

It was adopted by the "New Left" during the early 1970's.

    http://archive.discoverthenetworks.org/viewSubCategory.asp?id=552

America today is dominated by a system of beliefs, attitudes and values that we have come to know as “Political Correctness.” For many it is an annoyance and a self parodying joke. But Political Correctness is deadly serious in its aims, seeking to impose a uniformity of thought and behavior on all Americans. It is therefore totalitarian in nature. Its roots lie in a version of Marxism which sees culture, rather than the economy, as the site of class struggle.

Political correctness, oh yeah when Americans decided to stop trying to be vulgar ********s..Did you prefer the religious and moral PC before the cultural Marxist version?
Can we go back to telling Polack jokes that Reagan wanted people to stop using when he was chumming with Lech Walesa of Poland to throw off the Soviets?

There has always been a class struggle in the USA and it started with the signing of the Constitution over slavery, land owners, the gentry, and the elitist who didn't want the common citizen electing the executives of the nation....Not to mention the actions against those tribes that inhabited land.
