It didn't bother them because most of them were 'northerners.' The secessionist movement in maryland was, as you said, not grassroots, which is why no one cared when martial law was imposed to stop it.

Very different dynamic if support for secession in a state is over half.

    Which it very rarely was.

Most of the states that seceded did so rather quickly. Their legislatures were owned by the rich planter classes who honestly thought that England would come in on their side and GB would continue to make them rich as they had been doing for GB. Unfortunately, better cotton was available cheaper from Egypt, and without the onus of being produced by the very system GB was using it's opposition to to justify conquering most of the Africa

I can remember back in the late 60's and early 70's when California's hippies and freaks were moving to Oregon by the thousands.

It wasn't uncommon seeing a sign at the California-Oregon state line saying..."Welcome to Oregon, Californians stay out.""

Why have conservatives become so divisive? You echo Trump with his inability to work with anyone in disagreement with him. Like him, you seem to think the only way to deal with disagreement is to divide those who disagree with you, rather than find common ground with them. Our nation could never have survived over 250 years if our past politicians had acted the way you're acting now. Shame.

There is no common ground allowed in California.

California is a totalitarian state with one party rule.

The Democrats in the state legislature even legalized voter fraud with motor voter, ballot harvesting and allowing anyone to register and vote on election day after the polls have already closed.

California is America's first third world state.

Half of Americans in California haven't had representation in Sacramento for decades.

California's state legislature passes over one thousand new laws every year and none were introduced by Republicans who only hold 1/4 of the seats in the state legislature.

The facts are illegal aliens are treated better in California than native born American citizens.

If you are not one of the PC protected class in California you have no representation in Sacramento.

I've seen several forum members--conservatives--charge liberals with wanting to divide the nation over disagreements with issues. Yet, I've never met a liberal who actually proposed such action. I'm a liberal, & I don't. Texas may or may not be legally permitted to divide into smaller states, but it's NOT liberals seeking that division, it's conservatives & Trumpsters. They are also the ones--in minority so far--who are suggesting secession from the U.S. for some states. Why are those who follow Trump, or support Trump, going toward secession so much more now? Are they so inept they can't imagine working together in unison with Democrats or liberals or even center-line moderates in America to make America better? Have they become so anti-American, anti-democratic & pro-authoritarian following Trump, that they will abandon their patriotism for America in favor of loyalty to Trump? I is a growing concern.

Ummm, on division. I'll say this again..

    "Not my president"
That may give you a clue on who is divided the country.

Republicans have tried to solve the problems at the border, tried to make a move on gun laws,

Everything the Republicans try to compromise on the dems demonize.
Its the dems causing the division.

Liberals swarm in, kick conservatives to the side, ignore their concerns then set about ruining the place..

    A. The case wasn't about children born to illegals; Wong's parents were legal.

    B. The Samoans are not citizens now, even though American Samoa is US territory.

    C. It took an act of Congress to give American Indians citizenship, long after the Wong decision.

So the court decision is about another issue, and didn't actually do what you claim it does.

    Case Closed.

The Puerto Rican Independence Party has elected senators in Puerto Rico. Why weren't they arrested for HIGH TREASON?

Puerto Rico is not a state. Territories have the right to petition for independence under the UN charter and most recognized International law. Have these Senators ever passed a resolution backed by the entire legislature?

In Baltimore after the ACW no-one was ever prosecuted, but the cannon emplacements were there for years. (some still are)

The Republicans have backed themselves in a corner on many issues, so they have cheated for years to support their cause, which has always been to benefit big business.

As far as Texas division goes, saying it can exists doesn't mean it's supported. I've stated I doubt the people in Texas would support it, but these claims that it isn't possible aren't correct. It takes more than wishful thinking.

Irrelevant. The ruling by the court is anyone born in US soil is a US citizen.

    Not US soil
Which wasn’t needed, per the Wong ruling.
Other than the fact the ruling explicitly states anyone born US soil is a citizen.

Based on my observations of events in Washington, DC over the past decade, I'd say your description of what's happening in California by Democrats, is occurring on a grander scale by Republicans in Washington, DC & across the nation in state legislatures. If there's a difference, please explain it to me.

The Republicans controlled the White House, the Senate & the House of Reps from 2017-2018. They had every opportunity during that two year period to pass the legislation you appear to favor, & claim they favor too. Why didn't they? Democrats were powerless to prevent them. How can you continue blaming Democrats after this opportunity was ignored by your party? You're confusing me.

Total nonsense. Republicans control most of the state legislatures in the South & central U.S., and most of the state governorships. There's no way Democrats have had the power to stop Republicans in any of those states for years, or in Washington, DC 2017-2018. How can you blindly go on blaming Democrats for something Republicans failed to do during their time in power? That makes no sense.

Gov.Gavin Newsom isn't the first person to say, "As California goes...so goes the country"

Medieval diseases, gangs, corruption, crime, crumbling infrastructure, out-of-touch wealthy elites, illegal aliens and ballot harvesting …

I do not live in CA, so am not familiar with the workings of the government there or the governor. However, I do know it's regarded as a pretty progressive state, & some of the ideas tried there that have succeeded, could prove valuable expanded to cover the entire U.S. Certainly, CA is far ahead of the rest of the nation in living the professed equality of various skin colors & between the English & Hispanic language groups. I'm sure there are problems in CA I'm not aware of, but the same is true for any state, county, city, town or general location you can name anywhere. I don't agree with your laser focus on what you regard as CA failures. There are many successes. Be fair enough to see those too.

Everything I've seen of conservative Republicans over the past decade demonstrate the precise opposite. One example was Mitch McConnell's treatment of Obama's last Supreme Court nominee, contrasted to his extreme partisan support of Trump's two nominees. The vast majority of Americans supported Obama's nominee. If conservatives don't believe in cramming things down other people's throats, then why did they (McConnell) cram Trump's two nominees down all American's throat? And, why is McConnell crowing about his eagerness to do it again?

Yes, there are a few Democratic states in the union, but the majority of states are Republican controlled. Nuff said.

Well the quality of life because of the Progressives experiment in California is deteriorating every day.

Question...where has diversity ever worked out ?

    It never has.

The best example is the Balkans in Europe.

It's where the phrase "balkanization" was coined.

Balkanization, or Balkanisation, is a geopolitical term for the process of fragmentation or division of a region or state into smaller regions or states that are often hostile or uncooperative with one another.

The stupidest war of the 20th Century started in the Balkans. The First World War.

Diversity IS working out fine in several scattered locations within the U.S. today. California could be regarded as one of them. I agree that history is filled with examples of racial & ethnic failures, but long term failure is different from permanent failure. From the beginnings of Homo Sapien Sapien about 200,000 years ago, individuals have dreamed of flying. For almost all that 200,000 years, failure repeated itself. But in 1903, the Wright Brothers broke the pattern & flew for the first time. Diversity has a record of failure, but the rewards of making it succeed are so enormous, it's worth every effort, & when that effort is made by enough people over time, it always leads to success. I am part of that effort.

I agree with your Balkans example. That's why I am opposed to the idea of secession of states from the union. That would be a form of Balkanization, & it would bring nothing but more conflict over more petty issues than we endure now. Balkanization is a form of tribalization, and it is the goal of Mankind to grow beyond both in his relationships with his fellow hominids. I'm part of that effort too.
