All firearms dealers must run a NICS check in the US. Any person in the business of selling guns in the US is by law a firearms dealer.

America has a next-door neighbor to the South with whom it has a long, porous border. Lots of guns flow over this border already. We could make guns as illegal as, oh, say, drugs ... with the same result.

We're not like Australia, you lucky b******s, we're not like England (which has very strict gun laws, ask anyone living in Northern Ireland)... we're more like Yugoslavia. Well, not quite yet in all respects although we're moving in that direction.

That doesn't address the weak gun laws regarding gun show loop holes and private sales and private gifts where no universal checks are carried out

I can't see why you are writing about the southern border where guns flow South not North

I think @APACHERAT posted the information on this, which I will try to look up later. Mexico does have very strict gun laws, it's true. Might be a lesson there.
Demand creates supply, whether it's heroin, guns, or fake racist hate crime stories.

What is a universal check supposed to do?

Harsh punishment laws are very good laws. Laws that encourage self-defense are just as good, very good.

If you know how to buy a gun, anyplace other than the black market, sans paperwork and with no background check, please detail the steps and mechanics of how to do this.

All my guns had a background checks and paper on them, but I would like to get at least one with no paper, however I don't know how to do it.

    A couple of ideas.
    Gun shows?
Firearms forums, perhaps a regional one in your area, make your wish known, perhaps someone has one to sell.
For example, if you live in the Southwest, there are these fellows:https://www.southwestfirearms.com/ .... a lot of the people who post there seem to know what they're talking about, and you could ask them. They could probably give useful advice about how to make such a purchase no matter where you live.

All the gun shows I've been to have a uniformed police presence and none of the dealers will sell without paper and a background check -- except flare guns. You can buy a flare gun without a background check.

Private sells, gun shows that have private sellers or simply ask for one to be passed onto you as a present

You have to be a dealer with a federal license to rent a booth or set up a table in a gun show, unless you sell strictly knives, swords, etc. They pay for the space and don't want the competition nor illegal sellers doing illegal things, so private sellers do not sell in a gun show.

You could lie on your application for space in a gun show and give a fake license number, but everybody knows everybody, this is a mainline culture, so something that attracts the attention of ATF is a threat to legal dealers & gun show operators, and they will call the ATF themselves rather than tolerate a renegade as gun shows are a living or supplemental income for many legal dealers.

Most likely the federal government has someone(s) undercover posing as customers in most gun shows looking for irregularities and listening to the chitter chatter.

Like what? How do you defend your family from roving bands of mauraders?

You know, there is a certain group of people ... sort of, I guess, vaguely on the Left but some of them are not ... who are 'back to nature' types... want to be natural again, live in the woods, no electricity, grow your own food without fertilizers, no power tools, no flush toilets. I can see the attraction, except for the lack of modern dentistry.

Well, good on 'em. It's still a free country -- I even know conservatives who think they can escape the coming BigSister/Transgender state by doing something like this. Hide in the woods and keep your mouth shut and don't use the internet.

But I'm personally a believer in the industrial revolution, scientific and technological progress ... so if a mob is coming for my home, I don't want to only have a longbow to defend it with. Please give me the latest technology, legalities and expense permitting. In that sense, I'm a 'Progressive'. (Didn't they call a model of those things "the Great Equalizer" because it gave an 80 year old grandmother a fighting chance against a 23 year old 6'4" recently-released from prison buffed-up thug? See .... equality as well. Very progressive!

There is of course no such thing as a gun show loophole. Every firearm sold by an FFL to an individual whether it is at their own brick and mortar store, or a gun show requires a form 4473 and a NICS check.

There is no gun show loophole. I’m fine with opening NICS up to individuals to conduct background checks. Requiring one in order for me to hand down a firearm to my son is silly.

    Mexicos gun laws are interesting.

What scares Mexico's elitist and ruling class is revolution.

Mexico doesn't outlaw an specific firearm. They go by the type of ammunition that are used in the firearm.

You can legally own a pistol but no pistol chambered for any cartridge larger than the .380
Revolvers, nothing chambered for anything larger than the .38 special.

Rifles, no rifle chambered for any cartridge used by any military.

Any private sale would be paperless. I’ve sold numerous firearms on armslist.com.

Private sellers do sell at gun shows. Most folks I see selling privately walk around with backpacks on and a list taped onto their pack with what they have for sale. Perfectly legal.

Most people (90%+) selling their guns at gun shows are licensed gun dealers, so a background check is still required. There might be a few private sells/presents that are legit, but they are not a regular occurrence. In any case, I am not aware of any of the mass shooters that obtained their weapons in any of these methods.

What would you say is the percentage of guns sold at the gunshow by these Private sellers? 10%?.....less?

I’d say definitely less than 10%

I've never seen that. That probably shouldn't be allowed by the gun show operator. No wonder there is complaining. And how is it known the backpacker isn't a nut with a bomb (rhetorical).

I've taught several gang-bangers who will readily say they can get guns pretty easily, I presume with no paperwork involved. One kid offered to get me one free many years ago. I didn't think he was joking.
