The United States is killing itself year after year. In August 2019, a terrible “record” was set in the US - there were three mass shootings with many casualties in one day. Obviously, something is wrong with "Great America".

News of the bloody slaughter with guns that happened in the USA turned into almost a common thing. This fact makes one think that these are not separate, out of the ordinary cases, but a new terrifying American reality.

At the same time, the number of murders and suicides that occurred with the use of firearms in the United States, over the past two decades, has reached its highest levels. According to information from open sources, the number of people dying from firearms annually from 1968 to 2019 exceeds the total losses in the wars that the US has ever waged. Of the above numbers, 23854 committed suicide. This was the highest rate in 40 years, but now the Americans have every chance to exceed it ... Every year, the number of suicides in the United States continues to grow.

Apparently, it will not be possible to reduce the number of such tragic cases in the near future, since the key condition for mass executions is the notorious right of US citizens to weapons enshrined in the Constitution. Based on the logic of American lawmakers, armed citizens are the most effective tool in preventing mass killings! Well, here - no comment ...

    Why is that happening ?

The convenient truth is... Overpopulation... Diversity and...Political Correctness.

    Overpopulation:

    It's a no brainer.
America's population was supposed to have been capped from between 150 million to 172 million.
Who is old enough to remember back when America was great when the federal government would run commercials on radio telling Americans stop having so many babies ?

    Diversity:
    Diversity has destroyed great civilizations.
    Diversity leads to balkanization.
There's a reason why the Balkans are called the Balkans.

    Political Correctness:
    Political correctness aka Cultural-Marxism
The PC agenda is socialism and totalitarianism.

    No poll... just more preaching.

@APACHERAT is right on target with his observations, IMHO -- especially about overpopulation, and, the perhaps less-obvious effects of 330,000,000 Americans all competing for a nice, big, sweet 'piece of the pie'... especially at a time when our central bank, the Federal Reserve, has completely taken over the economy during the last 11 years to protect the almighty-god stock market and those it cherishes as "too big to fail"....

The greatest danger behind the danger...? It's hiding right out in plain sight -- re-read George Orwell's masterpiece, "1984". THAT is where we are headed, like a runaway car headed for the edge of a cliff.... And meanwhile, Russia and China get stronger, better organized, and more positioned to work their own strategies, every damned day!

Your great great great great grandparents said, "What's this world coming to".

Your great great great grandparents said, "What's this world coming to".

Your great great grandparents said, "What's this world coming to".

Your great grandparents said, "What's this world coming to".

Your grandparents said, "What's this world coming to".

Your parents said, "What's this world coming to".

And now you are saying, "What's this world coming to."

It's called life and change. Some call it progress. But anyways, it's a repetitive pattern because future generations don't want to live the way past generations did.

Lots of conservatives not only want to live like past generations did but want to make the rest of us do so too.

Change does not happen because '"future generations don't want to live the way past generations did", as if some hologram 'future generation' sat down and pondered and decided how to change.
Social change is the result of thousands of small unseen alterations in reality, mainly material -- the discovery of the club, with which better to kill your enemy and take his woman ... the invention of writing ... the taming of the horse .. the only underlying universal is the general desire of humans for a more comfortable, more secure, more pleasant life.
Sometimes these slow accumulations of changes cause big sudden leaps. Sometimes they bring us silks and spices from the East. Sometimes they bring Genghis Khan and Tamerlane.

"Oh .. Ivan . ... look at all those horsemen riding towards us .. so many of them. we've never seen anything like that before ... what's the world coming to?"
"Now don't worry Sonya ... it's called life and change ... Some call it progress."

Yours is a very valid observation! It is something I wrestle with every day, because now I'm the OLD FART who's terribly concerned that the whole world is going to hell on a sled and that we need to get back to doing things like we did forty years ago.

But -- and please be objective -- look at WHAT we were doing forty years ago! We were right on the cusp of electing Ronald Reagan, and although it would take him and Fed Chairman, Paul Volcker, a couple of years to get the economy straightened out after ten years of idiocy, hyper-inflation, and total neglect, the United States went forward on a path of amazing success and prosperity.

A lot HAS changed for the better in the past 40 years... we have much faster, greatly improved methods for doing nearly everything now! From the standpoint of improvement in techologies, almost everything has been revolutionized -- our cars run better and longer (although they cost more), our medical procedures and medicines are vastly more advanced, our food, water, and air is safer and cleaner, etc., etc.

But from a sociological point of view, we are in trouble -- BAD trouble. Suffice to say, if you re-read Orwell's short fictional masterpiece, "1984" -- first published way back in the ancient days of 1949, you will be astounded at how much the dystopian misery of what he described parallels what we are turning into today!

Hint: in 1949, when Orwell wrote "1984", there were approximately 2.5 billion people in the world. Today there are 7.8 billion! Think about it! This is a very real, potentially very dangerous dynamic that NONE of our forefathers faced or even dreamed of....

I think one needs to look back on history and figure out why there were so very few mass shootings between 1900 to say 1960 when we had almost no gun control laws at all. Why the huge spike from 1970 to the present? Is it guns or has something changed in our society that is causing all these mass shootings, killings? Are we blaming guns for these mass killings? I think we need to find out what has gone wrong with our society that produces all the mass murderers. Of course I'm in a minute minority here. Guns are the cause to most, not the killers. We had 28 mass shootings between 1900-1970, probably around 200 since or more.

You can count them up is you wish.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mass_shootings_in_the_United_States

Notice the huge difference from 2000 till today and pre-2000.

Overall -- considering the world -- over-population is not going to be a problem. You might make out a case for a smaller population in a given country, like the US.

Once women get education, and once the primary source of social security for your old age stops being your children, and becomes the state or private provision, women stop being baby machines.

In fact, the birth rate falls below replacement level. |In Europe, the birth rate of the indigenous population has plummeted: to keep the population numbers steady, an 'average woman' must have a little more than 2 children. In Europe, it's about 1.5, except for the growing Muslim population, where it's about 2.2. Unless the Muslim birth rate declines, which may happen, eventually Muslims will become the majority population in Europe. (There is also conversion to Islam, although at the moment this is not great.) Increased Muslim immigration into Europe, which can be expected, would also speed up the time when Muslims become an absolute majority. But other changes -- the assimilation of Muslims to modern values -- will probably happen long before that time.

However, there is good reason to expect the Muslim birth rate to drop: in Iran, it's already below replacement level.

In the United States, the birth rate is also below replacement level. Hispanic women traditionally have had higher birth rates, but theirs has plummeted as well.

    Worried about over-population? Educate women.

We must not overlook advances in biological technology, such as artificial wombs.

Quantity is not going to be our problem. Quality is going to be our problem.

As has already been pointed out over population is not a problem. Were it ever to be a problem at some point it would correct itself. Disease, war, climate change. There are many ways nature can bring a correction. At this time it is the urbanization of the population that is lowering the birthrates below replacement. Children are less economically viable in an urban setting.

The biggest, and most dangerous (to me) changes are social driven by technology. The younger generations have shown they are willing to sacrifice, security, privacy and even personal freedom for convenience. Technology is removing the need for critical thinking and problem solving. Have you ever asked someone under the age of 30 for directions? You are likely to get a blank stare.

I am convinced the gun issue will resolve itself. The 2nd amendment will be changed if not go away entirely in the next generation or 2. The first amendment may even go sooner than that.

This used to bother me until i came across the quote in my sig by Thomas Jefferson. It come from a letter he wrote to James Madison.

"that the earth belongs in usufruct to the living;" that the dead have neither powers nor rights over it.

It made think and I have to agree. I no longer concern myself with the future. Since the future does belong to my children i warn them from time to time to consider the long term consequences of the choices they make today. While the benefits may "appear" evident, it's those unintended consequences that will bite you in the arse.

While I agree that the gun problem is out of control, it isn't fair to mix in suicides. Most suicides are men by 4:1 or more; by as much as a factor 10:1 over women at times.

Speaking as someone who planned for months, put a gun to my head, and tried to pull the trigger, the problem had nothing to do with guns. I considered many options. I might of just as easily chosen any of a number of other methods.

By blending suicides with the gun problem, you are completely ignoring the real problem: Why are so many men committing suicide? And I think the fact that this didn't even occur to you is a symptom of the problem.
