I lean to the right and my college has a lot of left views. How do I avoid being brainwashed? Because I don't want to change who I am and the professors aren't going to do that I'm sorry. I'll just do my studies and not mention I lean to the right which is quite sad really. You can't even express your political opinions anymore without being looked down on.

Just be yourself. Don't hide your conservatism, but don't antagonize instructors/professors either. I have a son like you, who made the mistake of antagonizing professors in the humanities. Thankfully he's an engineering major, and only has one more humanities course required.

Since I live in Tennessee, I figured I would avoid a lot of this political correctness crap, but I guess not. We have a few loony liberals here as well.

Then I don't see how the question makes any sense. If the professors aren't going to change who you are, how can they brainwash you?

Just listen, learn and think critically about the ideas you already have, and the ones presented to you. College is not supposed to be about stagnation but growth. Maybe you grow further to the right, maybe tilt more the left, maybe you end up with branches leaning both ways but don't waste the experience sweating bullets that you may be 'brainwashed'. That kind of fear, means you already are!

Exactly, just THINK about things presented to you and make up your own mind based on your own thoughts

You hold what you got growing up. You get your sheepskin and get the hell out of there. You make your green money and you never talk to the alumni association or give a dime -- you paid and will owe them nothing.

College for you is but a stepping stone. Only the idiots crawl under their thumb.

I should've tried a christian college, they are mostly conservative. There are hardly any in my area though and I like staying close to home.

If you honestly need us to tell you, then you should not be going to college. But just in case...we call it "Using Your Brain".

The point of college is to expose students to new ideas and viewpoints. The answer isn’t to close your mind — the answer is to think about what you experience and come to your own conclusions about it.

Colleges aren't trying to brainwash you. Its just that academics tend to have liberal views so you will hear a lot of liberal views at college. In your family its probably mostly just right-wing views and you don't hear a lot of left-wing ones, but that doesn't mean your family is brainwashing you.

Nobody can complain about being brainwashed because they are in an environment with a certain viewpoint because there is the internet and you can fact check and get the other side for any argument you hear. Its great that you are hearing another point of view at college and may help give you a larger perspective on the debate. Just make sure to fact check your beliefs, the beliefs of your family, and beliefs of those at college.

I remember being bullied at church because I shared some left-wing views. Sometimes when an environment has too much of one opinion, people with other opinions get harassed and that can go for college campuses as well. I went to college in a right-wing area, so while most of the professors were left-wing, students with right-wing views were allowed to share their views. If you don't feel comfortable sharing your views at your college, then just sit in the back of the class, don't participate in political discussions, and just get a good grade. Find places where you are free to express your views if you want to express them.

Well, when I hear 20 something year olds use the terms "gross" and all of that. It really gets on my damn nerves. I just know they have left leaning views then. They use those type of terms on the "the young turks"
