I always ask if humans have collectively reached our full potential? Sure we have the capability to do better, to do what is right, but can we rationalize why we need to take various actions? Politics and religion and other cultural behaviors drive wedges in society dividing us along idealogical lines with no regards for truth and facts. So we are fighting a fight that cannot be won based on what's in the best interest of Earth and humans and instead debating and fighting nonsensical crap. It's the dumbing of Americans, and humans, and will lead to our demise if we don't change our path...

What would be the point of colonizing Mars when it's doomed to have the same fate as Earth when the sun gobbles both up?

It is likely that in the several Billion years until then we will be long gone. Also...Mars will probably escape being engulfed.

Nope, most estimate includes Mars. Beside, it's toasted all the same.
Moral of this story: Live in the now, for tomorrow we die.

If when you say 'live in the now', you mean continue human's abuse of Earth, then I suggest the 'living in the now' will be more painful than eventual death and extinction. What impacts on society, the economy, food production, water scarcity, health, and general welfare, will be forced onto people as we're dealing with sea level rise, temperature increases, etc.? There won't be enough money on Earth to deal with all the issues! Just think of the costs and disruptions alone dealing with sea level rise...it will be >astronomical. Some of these impacts are being felt today so it's within a 'few' years, not centuries, that the real **** might hit the fan...

You and I will be dead before it gets really bad so the living for today thingy makes sense.

I agree...I'm in my prime with an organized life and money to burn so I should go crazy...however...I'm effected by the gene that forces me to set a fine example to my family and friends...I wish I was arrogant and frivolous!!

But there is methane coming from somewhere on Mars.

You don't need living or dead organisms to create methane.

Yet...the geological mechanisms do not seem to be there....thus the speculation.

    It's carbon+hydrogene... It doesn't need anything more.

Actually, it most certainly does, and the fact it is a seasonal phenomenon is quite puzzling.

Methane is one of the most abondant element in the universe. You have whole planets whos atmosphere is primarely methane. No presence of life or organic matter is necessary.

I would not rule out the possibility of life producing methane on Mars.... And.... I would not rule out the possibility Mars is sterile.

Nor did I state it is a necessity...only a possibility. You seem to arguing the opposite from a relatively closed mind.

With the thin atmosphere and extreme radiation I don't see more than a tiny possibility of some form of extremophile living there. Nothing to base a colonization upon anyway.

Not really. I'm just a realist.

Beside, why spend trillions to send people on another planet and then spend trillions more to ship them the basic necessity to ensure their survival when they have all that they need on the planet they were made to be on.

Firstly, nobody spends Trillions on anything,,,ever, Millions sometimes or even a Billion on whole programs like the SLS. Secondly we tend to explore because it is in our human nature and what we have always done. That's how the new world came about and how we went to the moon....if you do not have that gene or imagination so be it.

We don't really know what is below the surface.... And I would not base a colony on them.

Radiation on Mars if far, far, far from being "extreme".

Once we restore Mars's Ocean and air it will be a pretty nice place.. Low gravity, unspoiled. I think it will be a resort. The Hampdens of the Solar System

Next to no atmosphere and no magnetic field to speak of, so yes radiation is a big problem.

Exploring a world hospitable to you is something else than going to a barren world.

Going to mars is a waste of ressources.

We can't even build durable roads and bridges and you think we'll terraform another world?
