Cell phones/towers, smartmeters, wifi/5G, high voltage power lines... theres a lot of conflicting info out there. How concerned are you about it? (explanations of vote encouraged)
I went with : * I worry whats its doing to me, but I don't take any preventative measures. There is definitely a difference in the environment when everything's on and running and when everything's off. Off like in a power outage. I don't know what the EM fields are doing to me but I don't take any precautions.
I would suggest not using any electrical devices as they all create EM pollution inherently, if you are worried. Who needs lights or a toaster anyway?
I figure its like everything else- moderation is required. You wouldn't suggest that chewing a piece of gum is the same as chugging a case of diet coke, would you? lightbulb vs call tower is a similar relationship.
Lightning is a major cause of storm related deaths in the U.S. A lightning strike can result in a cardiac arrest (heart stopping) at the time of the injury, although some victims may appear to have a delayed death a few days later if they are resuscitated but have suffered irreversible brain damage. According to the NWS Storm Data, over the last 30 years (1989-201 8 the U.S. has averaged 43 reported lightning fatalities per year. Only about 10% of people who are struck by lightning are killed, leaving 90% with various degrees of disability. More recently, in the last 10 years (2009-201 8, the U.S. has averaged 27 lightning fatalities. https://www.weather.gov/safety/lightning-odds About ten times as many people are hit by lightning and live, than those who are killed. The effects of high-voltage shock can manifest years afterwards. Long term organ damage is common. There are support groups for victims high voltage exposure because there are so many complications. There is no need to worry about lightning unless you're in a lightning storm. Then there is plenty of reason to be concerned.
Wearing my old metal baseball cup makes me feel safe although once when standing close to the microwave I got one hell of a radiation arc and burn...
Since roughly the 1880s there had been people working in very strong EM fields for their whole careers without showing any large scale harm. Hell my father work from the 1940s to the 1970s around strong fields generated by railroad equipment. In fact, the idea of microwave ovens came about when a military radar technician found a candy bar had melted in his pocket from a high power search radar he had been working on. In any case, only extreme cases of EM exposed had been found to be harmful not cell phones or even high voltage power lines a few hundred yards distant for example.
I thought I read something many years ago in which highway patrol officers used hand-held radar units to identify speeders, and they would lay the radar guns in their laps, without turning off power, and some of them were dealing with testicular cancer issues...
There are enough things to worry about that I have some degree of control over, to not worry about things that I don't.
You can avoid holding your mobile phone against your ear. If EM has any potential to cause problems, not holding a transmitter next to your brain, is a no brainer.
