The head of United Nations Global Communications says that it is a "right" for migrants to illegally enter the United States.

Writing on Facebook, Melissa Flemming asserted that, "the right to seek asylum is enshrined in Article 14 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights & was made binding by the 1951 Refugee Convention."

"It is never a crime to seek asylum in another country even if one enters a country irregularly," she added.

As head of communications, Flemming, who is American, is also the spokesperson for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the same organization that Rep. Ilhan Omar advocated take control of the US-Mexico border last week.

"We should do what any other country does by dealing with this situation in a serious way," Omar said during an immigration forum in south Minneapolis.

"So, we have to bring in the United Nations high commissioner on refugees, an agency that has the expertise and the training to handle massive flows of refugees humanely."

    Really, it's a right ?

Are they holding all the other Third World countries in the world to these same standards?

Does an asylum seeker get to pick any country in the world they want to go to? Is it perfectly okay if, while escaping their home country, they pass through four or five perfectly decent countries on their way to their target destination country, due to better economic prospects?

Do countries have the right to enforce their own borders?

Your misleading headline aside, the right is to seek asylum. You have a problem with that?

The US isn't denying the right of asylum seekers to seek asylum, they're just telling them to go seek it in Mexico.

And the UN commissioner’s point is that people have a right to seek asylum, even if they enter a country illegally to do so. It is not saying they have a right to illegal entry; it is saying that entering illegally does not cancel your right to seek asylum.

So they should be treated the same as asylum seekers who did not enter the country illegally to seek aslyum?

Asylum in the USA is a narrow thing though:

Asylum has two basic requirements. First, an asylum applicant must establish that he or she fears persecution from their Government in their home country. Second, the applicant must prove that he or she would be persecuted on account of one of five protected grounds: race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or particular social group.

Being from a poor, dangerous crime ridden hellhole isn't grounds the law is the government targets them for one or more of five protected grounds that's it so why aren't we following the law and be clear if gang crime is a danger to you back home and being poor isn't grounds for asylum and just refuse them on that keeping this simple. Refugees and others who want to come by immigration must do it via proper channels.

No one is saying to these people they can't apply to migrate to many other nations other than the USA Japan and South Korea have labor needs they might try those countries if they are willing to work in a safe country.

Yep. Why not? Someone is fleeing for their life, and you want them to observe niceties?

That can be a very difficult thing to establish, and to be able to weed out the true asylum seekers from the economic migrants who pose as asylum seekers.

Unlikely in South Korea. They have a lot of elderly aged workers who live on scant pensions and need work. The government is trying to get employers to find work for the old people.
Japan is very picky about who they bring in to do their labor. They generally don't want their foreign temporary workers to stay too long or start causing disruption to the harmony of Japanese society.

It shouldn't be that hard its simple in Honduras is this poor person a member of a known group subject to government persecution and that list the CIA should have a handle on its their job as is the State Department. Unless they can prove there is such a risk and its simple to say they are moved to refugee migrant status then find countries who will take them in the USA is following our treaties in saying they must apply to the first nation that they come to that is safe and apply for protection which in most cases of southern migration Mexico. If they can't handle the flow then the UN needs to ante up and find nations willing to take them in and spread the costs and such around. As for people here illegally if any are using fraudulent identity documentation its a felony for each document and use of them charge them, toss their butts into prison then toss them out and their children send them back to their home nations they can join relatives there or go to orphanages or something until their criminal parents join them.
