That makes Sanford the first SERIOUS GOP Primary contender IMO. As a former Governor and with experience in Congress he has the necessary qualifications. His dalliance with his Brazilian mistress cannot be held against him given the BLOTUS's abysmal lowering of that bar as an impediment to holding high office. Anyone else recall Bob Dole trying to make it all about "character"? The GOP has no "family values" to run on so Sanders does stand a chance.

Not that he can expect much in the way of support from those who are ardent BLOTUS supporters. Instead his appeal is going to have to be towards all of the DISAFFECTED former members of the GOP who abandoned the party when it was taken over by the extremist white nationalists.

Now we just have to wait for the BLOTUS to come up with a puerile nickname of some kind. Not going to be easy without making himself look like a hypocrite but that never stopped him.

Be interesting to see how much support Sanford does gather in the polls and whether the GOP Establishment will see him as a viable alternative to the raving Imbecile-in-Chief.

Sanford has as much chance as that democrat from Ohio, John Kashack.

I guess the corrupt RNC is acting like the corrupt DNC did in 2016 by helping corrupt Hillary take the nomination through corrupt practices ... we really, really need a viable third party in this country.

Yes, that is correct but it will be a good way to evaluate exactly how much support the BLOTUS has and how much of the GOP would prefer another viable candidate.

The GOP establishment is reading the tea leaves, Trump has near 90% approval among Republicans, they aren't throwing good money after bad unless something dramatic happens between now and late august 2020

Aren't those the EXACT SAME peals of laughter that greeted your BLOTUS when he announced his candidacy?

Sanford has both the credentials and the political scars to be a worthy opponent. He restarted his political career and SUCCEEDED in being elected to Congress. That means he has learned from his mistakes and knows how to overcome adversity.

Feel free to dismiss him but he could end up being your BLOTUS's worst nightmare in the Primaries. Even if Sanford loses he could end up playing a similar role to the one that Ted Kennedy played against Carter in 1980. It was sufficient to weaken the incumbent and when you are already as low in the polls as your BLOTUS you don't have any margin of error.

Nobody knew what to expect politically from Trump in 2015. I laughed when he announced, thinking that he had no chance, that the senator from Texas would quickly blow him out of the water.

    Sanford we have seen already.

We're not going to have a "viable third party" in this country although you are free to vote for any of the many nonviable third parties. Third party dreamin' seems silly to me.

Frankly I support a Sanford run. Without an opposing candidate, there are no RNC primary debates, and if there is one thing I want to see, is Trump debating Sanford, or any of the other never Trumpers.

Besides, he'll need a punching bag to practice on for the debates with the eventual Democratic nominee.

These 'candidates' still need to meet the minimum requirements to get on ballots, which is unlikely. Most of America has long since stopped caring about the whining of never-Trump babies...

Read here that the GOP is thinking about limiting attempts to run against Trump.

    Yeah, Everybody has seen that.

Obviously some states will still have GOP Primaries.

Hopefully, the CNN and MSNBC will hold GOP Candidate Debates.

Of course, Trump won't show up--BUT, it will be fun to watch Republicans bash Trump for an hour or 2.

One way to get your picture in the news is to say you are going to challenge Trump. Reminds me of the unknown politician a while back who called a news conference to say he was not going to seek the office of the president. I never heard of the guy until that moment. Trump vanquished an impressive group of republicans the first time around. So we should ignore those republicans who say they will challenge Trump because they are truly the JV politicians with big league egos. And if you are a democrat you might want to talk to Hillary, who got her butt spanked by Trump.

What have you seen of Sanford that makes you believe he won't be a credible alternative to the BLOTUS?

Interesting link, thanks for posting it.

The GOP trying to deny primary voters the opportunity to pick their own choice of candidate is indicative of just how WEAK a candidate the BLOTUS will be in 2020.

It also blows away the whining about the Dems primary process.

Obviously both the GOP and your BLOTUS are SCARED of a 2020 Primary Challenge!

Actaully, they are more like the 2012 dnc and any party when the incumbent is in the oval.
in 2012 there were 17 challengers to Obama and not one debate.
