The most powerful bureaucrats in Australia have been wargaming to prepare the country for "national-scale systemic climate risks" that could impact "the full spectrum of human activity" and are already "overwhelming" the country's ability to respond.

    Key points:
    • The Secretaries Group on Climate Risk includes some of the country's most senior military figures and the heads of the Federal Government's biggest departments
    • The minutes from the group's meetings noted extreme weather was already "overwhelming" the country's ability to respond to climatic events
    • The group also considered legal risks that climate change could pose for the Government
The ABC can reveal a group called "the Secretaries Group on Climate Risk" began meeting in March 2017.
It includes some of the country's most senior military figures as well as the heads of the federal government's biggest departments.

The group has not been formally disbanded, but fell into dormancy. But before that, the group warned the government it was widely seen as trailing the private sector in addressing the impacts of climate change.

The group conducted a set of exercises called "Project Climate Ready", in which the government chiefs wargamed future scenarios that it is expected could occur because of climate change.
    .....
The minutes from the meetings noted extreme weather was already "overwhelming" the country's ability to respond to climatic events. As examples, they noted:

From the ABC news this morning.

The government needs to lift its act.

Aside from creating "The Australian, Interior, Great Lakes"
What can you really do aboot it?

    Adapt.
    Improvise.
    Overcome.
    But, how about climate manipulation?

    Weather Warfare episode.
    Apply weather manipulation for "good".

    Of course "they" are.

How do you think the super drought happened in California?

Lots more contrails high in the sky than I ever remember being so common.
And we know what is in those "trails".

If they used their weather manipulation tricks for good,
imagine how much cooler Australia might be. And wetter.

The conditions have to be there to be manipulated.

Interesting that there were three years without hurricanes. I haven’t checked that- I assume it’s true.

There are other countries doing this too- how do you know that the American one would prevail?

The state has not implemented much water infrastructure since 1979 even though the population has doubled since then. The state’s reservoirs lack enough capacity to contain one year’s worth of precipitation. In February 2017 for example, several reservoirs diverted water into the Pacific Ocean as a flood control measure. Leaky distribution systems further affect the amount of water available to consumers. It is estimated that it would take nearly six dry years to empty the water held in California’s reservoirs at the current rate of water use. The state has large water consumers such as the estimated 2.7 trillion gallons it exports annually in cattle feed. In comparison, the state's urban water consumption per year is approximately 2.3 trillion gallons.

You need a couple more water tanks.

    And a shotgun.

    Besides the Great Interior Lakes
water might be pumped down to ground water level
    rather than reservoir for storage.

Oh you meant California, not Australia.

    California has upgraded reservoirs.
The days of damming up valleys like Yosemite are done.
So it's harder to find places in California for reservoirs.
The Federals own enough of the Rocky Mountains some good
    water systems might be created.

I have two tanks. No shotgun. If it gets to that, we’re all scuppered and it’s the end for all of us.

I didn’t understand the last bit.

    Not DEA
    State of California.

These water rights off the Mason Cahoon Ditch
pre date 1905 so were relatively immune, not totally.

Look at a topographical map of California.
Lots of rivers couldn't make it to the pacific
and contributed to a central valley wetland
    Tule Ecosystem

Those Tule lands have been sucked dry, for "fracking".

I think Scott Morrison could be a "fake conservative". Abbott was a true conservative, Malcolm was a .... blank....but Morrison seem to be more interested in helping Ardern with her policies curbing the internet than implementing what he was elected for.

I also find it interesting that he took Jacinda's policies to the G7, apparently clueless that Trump opposed them or the huge battle the Trump government have on their hands in giving conservatives a voice online... so clearly oblivious of the undertones of what is going on in US politics then showing up with liberal Jacinda's ideas... I wonder how that went down

Australia's feral pig population is estimated to be about 24 million but the Otway Ranges, in Victoria's south-west, has not previously been their stomping ground.

    Key points:
    • There have been isolated reports of feral pigs in the Otways over the past decade, but sightings have increased recently
    • Parks Victoria and the Conservation Ecology Centre have set up traps, bait and cameras
    • Unlike feral cats, foxes and deer, there is still hope that this pest can be kept out of the Otways
    From the ABC news.
We are being overrun by feral animals!

Wild pig meat is highly sort after for making sausage, especially the German sausage as the flavour is more intense. A friend and I were getting up to $200 a pig, but they had to be cleaned and chilled. We were both employed in the abattoirs so that was no problem.

A friend with a pig farm, had an Estonian worker who would make sausages and the most divine bacon I’ve ever tasted. He smoked it over applewood.

    Apropos pigs.
“Sniffer dogs are being urgently flown to the Top End to try and stop African swine fever (ASF), a disease which has wiped out approximately 20 per cent of the world's pig population, from coming onto Australian shores.

    Key Points:
    • The high numbers of feral pigs in the NT presents a greater risk of spreading the disease
    • Biosecurity staff at airports have uncovered 27 tonnes of cooked pork, which can still be infectious for ASF for up to two years
    • International travellers who bring in high-risk items can be refused entry to Australia and have their visas cancelled for up to three years”

    • From the ABC news app.

People who try to smuggle in unauthorized food should on second offense be banned from entering Australia for ever. Smuggling a small bit of pork or any meat, just a few grams and it could have a devastating affect
