Gun confiscation has been in the news lately. Beto came out declaring he wanted to take people's assault weapons.

So, back to the question: Conservatives, if gun confiscation was legally passed and upheld by the Supreme Court...

Would you turn over your guns? If not, how does knowingly violating a constitutionally passed and approved law square with the veneration of the Constitution that goes on in conservative circles? And how does knowingly breaking the law square with "Blue Lives Matter"? Don't conservatives believe highly in "law and order"?

Only way to do that is by a constitutional amendment...
...in which case that would be irrelevant.

Our Court system was set up by the Constitution to do just that thing: decide which laws are unconstitutional.

It sounds like you want to go beyond that and use your own personal morality to decide which laws to follow, which I have no problem with. Just realize you're going down a path that leads to anarchy, and don't pretend to be a police-supporting law-and-order type.

Assume they change the Constitution. It doesn't change what I'm asking:

Conservatives, if LEO's came, with legal court orders, and tried to confiscate your assault rifles, would you obey them and turn over your guns? Or would you shoot the cops? You don't think it's going to be the military doing this, do you? You'll be blowing away local cops.

True...but they are not always right...see Plessy v Ferguson, people fought and highlighted that "an unjust law is, no law at all"

So laws are only laws if you agree with them.

That’s sounds about right with the current administration and his supporters.
I can’t want to see how the next administration uses this brilliant methodology

Well I'm more along the line of libertarian so if the Constitution becomes anti liberty it needs to be removed.
Not if it's used to oppress.

If you allow the Gov to strip your rights (RIGHTS...NOT permission) and create millions of criminals overnight by the tyranny of removing your rights, what else will you roll over for? People's guns are their personal, private property. The Gov has no rights or authority to it.

It's not something new....that phrase dates back to St. Augustine, used by Thomas Aquinas and often quoted by Dr. King to oppose tyrants that impose their beliefs on free people

While I agree with you on the personal property aspect (also applies to eminent domain and numerous other issues) I will have to disagree it is really a “right”, yes it is in the constitution but the moment the first rule or regulation was upheld on gun control it was no longer a right.

A felon has no right to a firearm
The state can make anyone a felon
Thus firearms can easily be removed by the state

    Correct,

Now comes the difficult question, should someone convicted of a major crime — say a school shooting attempt — after they are released should they be allowed to own a weapon? Is there a limit?

If someone cant be trusted with a weapon, they should not be in the free world. They will simply violate the laws or find other weapons. If someone attempts such a thing, they should toss the key into the sea.

So, if a law was passed that required you to have you gonads surgically removed and the SC said it was Constitutional, would you have them removed?

Wow....this making up hypothetical situations based on just making crap up is fun.

Seriously? We're talking about guns, not gonads. This is a silly response, and frankly, you're better than this. You should have pulled out the ol "Dred Scott" decision.

Uh, Beto didn't say he would come and take your guns? The Dems DON'T have a chance of recapturing government and instituting some gun confiscation scheme? Of course Beto said that and of course there's an extremely good chance the Democrats will control at least the House and Presidency. And there's a fairly good chance they might actually coaslece around some gun confiscation scheme. If we have another Sandy Hook...

Again, these are lame arguments. You're better than this.

Why are people struggling with this: If we've all selected some government, which is what we do, and that government legally wants to confiscate my non-existent assault weapons, I'm going to be a law-abiding citizen and turn them over.

This is amusing: the "FlamingLib" is more law-abiding than many of the conservatives here.

No, we are talking about a hypothetical situation that has a very slim chance of becoming law and then you are using this hypothetical situation to mock and ridicule people and claiming they would be hypocrites if they did not abide by your fantasy. I am definitely NOT "better than this" when somebody produces fantasy to use as ammunition to ridicule others.

But to answer you fantasy question, "NO" I would not.....and it has nothing to do with "laws". If we have reached that point, then this country no longer exists and we would have a tyrannical government.

Many Conservatives and Liberals venerate their interpretation of the Constitution and or venerate the parts that they agree with.

The extreme right wingers who think that we need to have weapons to fight our government are being foolish and talking BS. I really wonder how many of those pseudo patriots actually served in the military as many of us reasonable thinking guys did!
