We had 40 prisoners housed at Gitmo last year, the majority, if not all terrorists, the cost to house, feed and guard them for the year 2018 to American taxpayers over $540 MILLION.
This breaks down to a cost per prisoner of a little over $13 MILLION for each.Is this REALLY the best use of taxpayers money????We complain about giving our poor and under employed meager financial assistance while we operate the worlds most expensive prison.

I am surprised someone who is running for president hasn't promised to close it down. There can't possibly be reason that we don't know about that makes it logical to keep in operation. I mean if someone would say that closing it would be one of the first things he does president, then doesn't he must be a liar through and through. But my guess he was just ignorant to the importance of the facility and knew he had to keep it open once he was brought to speed on the subject.

The purpose of GITMO is the same as any SuperMax in the states. Every inmate in those places is too dangerous to ever release and are better to just be forgotten. The people who are in GITMO are never going to be released and because of it's location it's removed from those who would portray them as victims and create needless political drama. GITMO is worth every penny, want to save a few bucks? Bullets are cheap but again that would stir up the hand wringing crackheads.

Closing Gitmo is obviously a complicated issue, as evident from the previous POTUS who campaigned on closing the facility and failed to do so.

And yes, obviously closing Gitmo is back in vogue now that a new POTUS is in charge...

So you don't mind spending $13 MILLION per year on terrorists but begrudge paying below poverty level AMERICAN CITIZENS a few thousand per year??Very weird logic.

All you "Mexico will pay for the wall" folks, why is GITMO still open? O promised to close it, had 8 years to do it. But you gave him a pass...good thing he was not Trump, we'd of heard about it, every day.

Let's close Gitmo and send the tenants to OP's house. No? Where then?

I think this was one of his biggest frustrations

That he was unable to close that prison

I suspect their is a bit of deceit in the cost. We have about 8500 US military personnel at Gitmo. Most of them have nothing to do with the prison.

While this simple explanation is a half truth, it remains a half truth. You are leaving out parts of the pic here.

Do you suppose there is a reason he did not close GITMO?

The GOP didn't have control until half-way through his second term, but that is of course a very convenient excuse to why the previous POTUS didn't close Gitmo; despite promising to do so during his first week in office.

After reading that Guardian article it would appear that he used all the wrong tactics in trying to get the GOP congress,Obama only had a two house majority for a total of 78 days during his 8 years in office, because Ted Kennedy and another Dem. senator were both absent for the majority of his first year.

I dunno. Always seems interesting how the Democrats and the previous POTUS always seems to have difficulty getting what they want, despite having the political capital to do so...

Meanwhile, the current POTUS rarely (if ever) has issues getting what he wants done... Maybe a SCOTUS challenge here or there, but he always seems to get what he wants...

Not even sure why we have two major political parties at this point... We should really only have one...

Isn't there some way we could outsource Gitmo to Mexico?
