I might want to move there one day. I know they have good healthcare, but have poisonous snakes and other scary insects. Wages are pretty good too and they don't have all this divisive politics. Sounds much more peaceful. What do you think?

I think you got it about half right.

    * We do have good healthcare that is notionally covered by a tax levy, though quick access to the very best might cost a bit extra (though vastly less than the US).

    * We do have poisonous snakes. Quite a remarkable number and variety to be truthful. We also have some pretty impressive poisonous spiders, some of which can be found in most back yards (mine included). We have a truly bewildering variety of dangerous marine creatures, from tiny octopuses that will kill you inside an hour to jellyfish, poisonous fish, sharks and much, much more. We have huge crocodiles that not only live in rivers, creeks & ponds, but also swim out to sea. Really scary buggers those. Additionally pretty much everything here bigger than a chicken has either big teeth or big claws.....and some of our ants pack a really nasty bite/ Even platypuses are dangerous! Oh, and a guy was killed the other day by a bird swooping at him.

Just assume everything here is dangerous unless told otherwise. :)

.....but seriously, the most dangerous animal in Australia is a young male behind the wheel of a car. The animals sound scary, but they rarely kill anyone. Just wear gloves when you are in the garden, boots & socks in the bush and listen to the locals about water.

    * Wages are high here, but so are expenses. Housing is particularly expensive here practically anywhere you are likely to want to live. Taxes are high by US standards but not by European standards.

    * Politics here is quite divisive, but not a patch on the US or some parts of Europe. That said, I see signs we are getting worse. Our extremes are smaller and we seem less inclined to do monumentally stupid things (just lots of smaller stupid things). I don't think the standard of our politicians is especially high, but I don't see many nations where that is the case.

    * We are generally speaking safe & peaceful. In terms of crime we are firmly in the 'average Western European nation' range, which means safer than pretty much any US state.

If all of that appeals to you then start the applications to migrate now - the process can be drawn out & difficult depending on what you bring to the table.

We like migrants with education. If you have some sort of skill that will get you a job that will work too. Alternatively, the queue is much shorter if you have a lot of money. :)

Except for Victoria, I don't see much
as far as a nice place to live.
    Have you considered, New Zealand?
Or are YOU into roughing it. Ignoring the heat, humidity,
    total Nicole Kidman "Australia" experience?

BTW Giant Spiders are NOT insects. :D

    Racist.

Hey op, in 7 years the developed areas will be under the ocean. You don't want to move there until climate change is reversed. Wait, no, that's also climate change. I'm not sure.

Oh hell, I hear you can say anything you want about their government in public. Oh, no you can't. Sorry.

Well, there is, aw never mind. Move to Palestine. They only want peace. Darn, wrong again.

Gee, what a worthwhile and completely relevant contribution Chester. Quite the well informed one, aren't we.

Do mummy and daddy know you are using the computer? Probably time for them to have a talk to you about the difference between 'in your head' voice' and 'out loud' voice, and which one is appropriate for talking and posting on the internet. I do hope the medication helps you concentrate better. Maybe take some time off from posting until you work out how grown ups do it. Run along now.

You need to be wary of extreme heat in the summer, especially in rural areas far away from coastlines. It is never as comfortable as living in Los Angeles. Melbourne is the best place to live in this regard because of the mighty Murray River that runs through it. The heat got me in Western Australia and I had seizures.

My family has had a farm quite literally on the north bank of the 'mighty Murray' for 150+ years. I grew up in a town that is also on the north bank of that fine river. It is nowhere near Melbourne - hundreds of kilometers away at its nearest point. Melbourne has the not so mighty Yarra, which is about 5 minutes walk from where I am sitting now.

Melbourne is the most temperate mainland capitol city, but we still get weeks of 30 C+ weather in summer and usually get a few days over 40 every year. The good thing here is that there is usually a breeze and the weather is famously changeable - the Crowded House song 'Four Seasons in One Day' was written about living here. :)

If you want a genuinely cool major city then Hobart of possibly Canberra. However, they get quite cold in winter....plus thay aren't near;y as nice to live in as melboure or sydney.

Just avoid Melbourne (which is fast become Australia's answer to LA and/or SF), and you'll be fine :)

Rural Tasmania is a good option .. especially if you can get well above sea level. Go 400m+, if possible.

Both are better than Sydney and Melbourne :)

Australian 'cold' isn't a thing for Northern Hemisphere migrants.

Based on your previous post I'll give that all the consideration it deserves.

It was a bit harsh, wasn't it. There are some truly lovely areas of Victoria. And he further you get from the capital the lovelier it gets. As do the people :)

You made a stupid ideological statement that sounds like something our more brainwashed American posters would say. I'm not required to be polite about that.

There is a reason that Melbourne has consistently ranked among the most liveable cities in the world for decades. By all means choose not to see that, but spare us the ignorant BS.

I am very familiar with rural Victoria. I have had family there since the late C19th, have travelled widely and have many friends from there. If living in a rural area is your thing then its fine, but I know enough about rural Australia not to get sucked in by people who try to pretend it is any better than it is.

If living in a city is your thing then Melbourne better than most.

    So why don't more Aussies

    colonize New Zealand.

It seems like a nice land.

    English speaking.
    Infrastructure.
New structures can be e'quake proof too, as in California.

Find somewhere within 10km of the beach... the inland areas are too hot in summer, near beach areas are also less cold in winter. Australia has beautiful seaside towns. The burbs in Melbourne and Sydney suck... Brisbane suburbs are nicer, love the gardens in Brisbane all palm and other tropical plants... you stick something in the ground and it grows... but I found there were more snakes and spiders in the subtropics. Not sure if it is really the case or whether Sydney and Melbourne are simply more populated...

New Zealand is the land of the long white cloud.. lots of rain.. too damp

Don't move on a whim. Do your research first, visit and spend time traveling around the country. Make a list of your 'must haves', 'would like to haves' and 'don't wants'. Remember once you move to Australia you are a loooong way from home, friends and family. So think it through very carefully, same way as anyone thinking of moving from Australia to the USA should.

Oh, and with regards to all the poisonous critters etc think of it it terms of your own experience. You have about as much chance of being bitten, stung or eaten etc by a funnel web spider, box jellyfish, tiger snake or salt water crocodile in Australia as I do of being attacked by a grizzly bear, mountain lion or rattle snake in the US. So chillax about that issue - except of course with regard to the dreaded 'Drop Bear' those things are viscous ;-)
