On May 10, 2019, journalist Bryan Carmody ( @bryanccarmody ) was awoken when the San Francisco Police Department raided his home with a sledge hammer and guns drawn. They were there to seize his equipment and confidential work material after he refused to divulge who his confidential source was. This despite California's reporter shield law that is meant to protect reporters from having to reveal their confidential sources. They cuffed him for six hours and seized over $10,000 worth of equipment. They did all of this with the consent of two San Francisco superior court judges who signed off on the warrant. Two weeks earlier, two detectives from the SFPD Internal Affairs interviewed him to ask who leaked a police report about the death of longtime SF public defender Jeff Adachi (who had suffered an untimely death and was found in the apartment of a woman who was not his wife, according to the leaked report).
