Throughout our nations history only five presidents who have lost the popular vote have been elected via the Electoral College and all five were Republicans??
    John Quincy Adams
    Rutherford B.Hayes
    Benjamin Harrison
    George W.Bush
    Donald J.Trump
The popular vote margin of almost 3 million votes, which Trump lost by, is by far the largest margin. The fact that we allow political appointees to determine our president makes a farce of calling our nation a democracy and actually makes our national election a waste of taxpayer money since it never elects our president.

If our elections DO NOT ELECT OUR PRESIDENT, as they currently do not, THEN WHY BOTHER WITH THE EXPENSE OF HOLDING THEM??????

Then move to another country because we are a Republic and not a Democracy. The electoral college is necessary to ensure the urban areas do not have a tyranny over the rural areas. It has worked very well for 200+ years as the election of both parties has shown.
The founding fathers who set up the electoral college were far better educated and understood the issue much better than you do.

Outside of JQ Addams who was elected before the Republican Party existed, the 4 others who won without winning the popular vote were a handful of turds.

You summed it up perfectly. But when a kook votes for someone and that someone loses the kooks suffer from sour grapes. You are wasting your breath explaining to ignorant people. The republicans and conservatives didn't like Obama's policies but they didn't try to pull off a silent coup or change the Constitution. I do not understand how anyone today can claim to be a democrat.

This isn't and never was a democracy, its a Constitutional Republic. If you can't accept that, perhaps this isn't the place for you...

The thread name is misleading, my guess intentionally so. Every one of the 45 Presidents was elected by the Electoral College (many of them twice, one 4 times).

You do realize that the Founders did this on purpose, not as an accident. The last thing they wanted was a democracy. They wanted to keep power dispersed, so that no group, even the majority, had most of the power. It's a feature, not a fault. The whole purpose of the three branches of government, dividing legislative power between the people and the states, and the electoral college was to keep power dispersed and harder for anybody to use.

a number of states allow their delegates to vote against the popular vote. if you recall, a number of Republican delegates announced that they wouldn't vote for Trump, enough that it would have put him under the 270 threshold, and force the election to go before the senate to be decides (which has never happened)

The republicans then fired those delegates and appointed party insiders who would vote for whoever the party told them to vote for.

This is how the system is designed. It's designed so that in states where delegates can "vote their conscience", parties can just appoint delegates who will vote for their candidate, regardless of popular vote, and that is the reason the EC is corrupt.

Parties should have no say in who sits on the EC. In fact, I believe that it should work similar to jury duty, but with a set standard for who is eligible to serve.

We are not a democracy and never have been. Nor does anyone want a democracy after living in one.

I understand your dislike of the EC but it is in place for a reason. Personally I believe those reasons are in fact still valid.

We are a Constitutional Federal Republic, which includes limited democracy. The people elect the legilature, who appoint the electoral college, who elect the president.

    Exactly, not a democracy.

Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what to eat for dinner.

According to the textbook definition, you are wrong:

    https://www.google.com/search?q=def.....69i57j0l5.3157j1j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives.

Even the textbook definition does not limit democracy to direct democracy.
