Is it shameful? What does this say about the students' commitment to freedom of speech? Are the students being 'snowflakes'?

They're totally correct to say that it is important to bring "prominent, influential and, oftentimes, controversial speakers to campus.". Any prominent, influential and controversial speaker who agreed with that would be willing to speak at a university event without the large paycheck though. Anyone expecting or demanding to be paid shouldn't be speaking there (regardless of politics or family relationships).

I'm in favor or NOT paying ANY speaker from Student fees REGARDLESS of who or what they are.. If the students want to hear Calypso Louie or Al Charlatan then they should raise the money on their own...

Sounds like a 'shameful' waste of school resources to spend that much for anyone to come speak. At most, speakers should get a tax writeoff or something.

Don Jr is even dumber than his father. Just last week he was whining and tweeting about nepotism.

Fifty grand for two speakers? That's near the bottom of the going rate. Colin Powell alone would run them fifty grand. The controversy is leftists fearing that something positive might be said, heard or conceived in regards to our current President, conservatism or the Republican party, thus breaking the spell of the leftist mantra gripping our nation. What's funny or maybe alarming is that anyone would think that these two lightweight, moderate Republicans are controversial.

    On the one hand: lol.

On the other hand: there isn't anyone on the planet who would warrant spending $50000 to speak at a University. $50K of computers, books, pencils or even condoms would be money better spent.

Though Im betting thats not why they're mad. They're mad because TRUMP TRIGGER! Thus my original lol.

this isnt about 50k in speaking fees.

    this is about the speaker.

    that's blatantly obvious.

So as I understand the issue, it's not an issue of Trump coming. It's who's paying for it. If it's anything like what I've had to go through, colleges like to use the student activity fee whenever possible because it saves them money. I'm not exactly clear on what the role of the agency is and who funds it directly, but my guess is that they student body is complaining they are being forced to pay for something that the college should be funding themselves.

My reaction too. Fifty thousand dollars is a lot for the student body to cough up. It is their money though.
