Donald Trump said the Kurds and Turks have been fighting one another for 200 years, but to be honest I think he's wrong. I know that during the genocide of the Armenians, the Kurds did the dirty work for the Turks - but they did apologize for it later on..

I'm curious to know what Trump has up his sleeve? I know he's not going to go to war with Turkey, and sanctions might only push him closer to Russia, China and Iran.

It's not just with Syria and the Kurds that Erdogan is acting up. His ships have become a real menace in the Eastern Mediterranean and he's making claims over waters that Turkey has no legal right to. Turkey is also drilling in areas that have been allotted to other nations and Pompeo said this week that the US will not accept it.

So the President has executive power over withdrawing troops? I assumed that it had to go through the Senate. Maybe it did and I just didn't hear about it. All the headlines were, "TRUMP withdraws troops."

Jeannette, do you think Turkey and the Kurds should pay for what Assad has done?

Remember the 3.43 million Syrian refugees who have been in Syria for the past 5 or 7 years.

He really only has two options. To flip or to flop.

As you are a Greek-American. You always distort the facts!!! No suprising here.

Greeks refused "Cypriot Annan Plan 2003",
Greeks violated 1960 Cyprus Agreement by killing Turkish Cypriots and British and attempted to unite island with Greece.

Greeks always reject negotiations to result !

Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots have both right to drill, but they should act together. But Greeks acted one-sided. Greeks made the problem there, that's why we sent the ships, they are still ignoring Turkish Cypriots!

There are not only Greeks in Cyprus, there are Turkish Cypriots in Cyprus since 1574.
Greeks ignore them and their rights and their identity and their right to exist.
Greeks should look at mirror before complaining.

Our ships are drilling after agreement with Turkish Cypriots (North). So we don't care Pompeo will accept or not. We are now in Syria, and we are drilling at the end. :)

Considering congress never authorized the war in Syria and it was the Obama administration that sent US troops into Syria I'm guessing Trump can bring them home without approval from congress.

Well, similarly, I assumed that sending troops INTO war had to go through Congress.

Obama said the American troops would be in Syria only 30 days, and that was quite a few years ago. His excuse for illegally invading another nation was to fight ISIS. If ISIS has ceased to exist, then we have to comply with international law and leave. If we want to be a law unto ourselves, then expect the worse. Enough is enough!

Excuse me, but is the occupied part of Cyprus accepted as a sovereign state by any nation in the world other than Turkey? Now how about a little reality.

The Turkish population in Cyprus before the invasion was 11%. When Nixon was being impeached, Kissinger who was Secretary of State gave his student Echevit the go ahead to invade Cyprus. He forced Greece not to intervene and the Turkish army killed thousands and ethnically cleansed 1/3 of the island. That wasn't unusual, it's habitual with Turkey. This is why Trump warned Erdogan not to dare touch the minorities in Syria.

Britain promised to give Cyprus to Greece at the end of WWI and they didn't - even though it was part of the treaty. Churchill promised Cyprus to Greece during WWII if they helped in the war effort. Greece did enter the war of course, but later they were embroiled in a civil war so Britain thought the better of it and decided not to.

When the civil war ended, the situation with Cyprus was brought up at the UN. To keep Cyprus from being taken from them and handed to Greece at a time when the Cold War was raging, Britain began to rile up the 11% Turks on the island. This policy is something Britain has done quite often to maintain power - Ireland comes to mind among others. It's also what we've been trying to do in Syria.

The demands of a small minority of Turks who were not willing to accept international law and impose themselves on will of the majority population infuriated some Greeks in Greece, so a small group of paramilitary nationalists went to Cyprus and began frightening the Turks so they would shut up. This is the excuse Turkey gives for the genocide and ethnic cleansing of 1/3 of the island, and for going against the Lausanne Treaty and destroying the business', raping, killing and cleansing up to a half a million Greeks in Constantinople.

Anyway the point is that Turkey is an outlaw nation with a megalomaniac leader at the helm - which doesn't bode well for them. The last one in the world was Adolph Hitler, and we saw the end result. Erdogan right now is being kept in line by Vladimir Putin, so he only talks. I fear though if Erdogan should fall - especially now that he's made the people in Turkey think of themselves as being invincible and that they were given some god given right to restore their former empire.

    Anyway this is my opinion.

We have to wait and see. It depends on Erdogan's actions. He wasn't just warned by the US, but also by Russia and Iran.

Oh then Assad destroyed Syria? It was not then the terrorists sent in by Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey, so they could impose on the all inclusive Assad government sharia law. Interesting viewpoint there.

But then again you're aligned with Saudi Arabia's takfiri government, so it's to be expected.

There was an early report that the Russians were coordinating with the Turks and moving their troops in from the south. And, another report indicated the Iranians were mobilizing and c indicting military training exercises on their border with Syria. Have heard nothing more about either over the last 24 hours.

    Suadi Arabia is your ally.

Their prince got Jamal Khashoggi to killed but you also help them to whitewash. Those wahabi monsters killed thousands of civilians in Yemen with weapons that your carrot head Trump sold them. You are responsible all the civilian deaths in Yemen, kids, pregnant women etc.

    ---------
We sent there "Free Syrian Army who are not terorist, we chose them from Syrian people who fled Turkey, and we trained them to take back their stolen lands from PYD terorists. They and other 3.7 million Syrians in Turkey will go back their home soon.

Europe and YOUR GREECE will thank to us, soon. Everyday Greece begs European Union to give more money to Turkey. Because they fear us to open our borders to Syrians move Europe and Greece :D :D :DTherefore Greeks should support operation at first

If leaving Syria means that no more American soldiers return in body bags, it's worth it.

If the Russians are with the Turks, it's to watch over them and make sure they won't commit any crimes - and that they will leave. Or to keep a war from breaking out between the Syrian army and Turkey. Other than Kurds there are also Christian Assyrians and Armenians in the area. Going in with the Turks is what the US was going to do, but Trump backed down. Probably so he won't put American troops in harms way and risk a war.

Erdogan told Putin he respects Syria's sovereignty, and right now there is a peace process going on and the hope is that it won't be disturbed by Turkey's action. Iran does have troops at the border. Maybe it fears for the Shia population, or maybe it fears an uprising of the Kurds within its border if Turkey starts killing civilians. Who knows?

Wait for what? ISIS prisoners have already escaped the prison they were held in after Turkey bombed it. ISIS have already carried out one bombing attack. 100,000 refugees have already left the area, near on 100 on both side have already been killed

If Erdogan goes too far the US will be forced to respond, by law, whether it will be needed is up to Erdogan. Erdogan is going to have to be careful because he could be swallowing the bait hook line and sinker

Wait for the Kurds to sign an agreement with the Syrian government, then Assad could tell Turkey to get out of there and have the full weight of the UN behind them. As long as the Kurds are an illegal entity on Syrian territory, they have no rights..

I think that's the gist of it.

He's going back to the foundational principles of Washington and Jefferson, who didn't want us involved in "foreign entanglements." For 70 years now, from Korea, to Vietnam, to Iraq, to Iraq II, to Afghanistan, to Syria, and to some I may have forgotten, we have been fighting needless wars that don't serve our interests or the interests of those we are warring with.

As the saying goes, we are not the world's policeman.

Perhaps you could explain why Trump has sent over 1000 US soldiers to Saudi Arabia in the last couple of months, still has thousands in Afghanistan yet removed soldiers from the relative safety of North Syria

Does military action normally go through Congress?
