The use of "Democrat" depends on context and use. You can use it to denote one Democrat such as saying 'Joe Biden is an old Democrat ' which is fine because you would be talking about one person. If you are referring to their party you need to use the name they have called themselves for almost 200 years. They are the " Democrat Party" a group of many individual individuals.

I have not been a Democrat for over a quarter of a century and do see most of the Democrats running in the Democratic Party primary as fools, too old to serve, not Democrats and not electable.
