I think that there were always connections between the Democrats and the junta that took control after the coup. I recall when the airliner was shot down, Robert Parry the investigative reporter wrote that big bucks were being passed around Washington by Burisma Holdings to keep the blame on Vladimir Putin.

Unless I'm mistaken, the protests in Ukraine started around April 2014. Yanukovich belonged to an opposing group of oligarchs/mafia than the ones Nuland and Obama favored. So blaming the coup on corruption was merely an excuse to eliminate one group in favor of those who were willing to work with Obama, Nuland and Biden.

What I recall is that Yanukovich thought the losses of joining the EU would be something like $30 billion, (I might not be accurate here, I always make mistakes with numbers), while the real amount turned out to be more like $150 billion. What they didn't take into account was Russia's trade deals with Ukraine.

Putin said there was no way it could keep those deals, since EU goods would be coming in with lower tariffs through Ukraine. Putin tried to speak to the EU so some arrangements could be made, but they refused. I don't know what Merkel's game was, but she asked Putin to be generous. Anyway the EU told Yanukovich they couldn't loan him the money that he needed to carry him over, and he would have to borrow it from the IMF.

Yanukovich refused the IMF terms since they wanted him to lower the social services 70% and double the price of gas. He felt he couldn't do that to the Ukrainian people. When Yanukovich turned down the EU, Putin forwarded a large sum as a first payment on Ukraine's enormous debt. After the coup, the junta refused to return the money.

The junta unlike Yanukovich, accepted all the loans of the IMF, and like in Greece, none of the money went to help the people. The difference is that in Greece the money went to pay back the loans, and the rest went to buy military arms from Germany because of Turkey and its threats. In Ukraine though, part of the money disappeared, probably into the pockets of the oligarchs and the rest probably went to buy arms - no doubt from the US.

The intent of the IMF was the same though, it was to indebt the people so the countries assets could be bought up at a cheap price. I believe the average income today in Ukraine is about $200 a month. -

 

We have this idealized self-righteous view of our foreign policy yet when we did deeper we find that it's managed by a bunch of crooks stealing with both fists.

The other thing that I find stunning when I travel internationally is that people love Americans even while they hate our government, they seem to understand that we have no idea what is really going on, and don't hold us to account for it, which frankly, I don't understand. It is our job to remain informed and hold them accountable.
