    Hello,

next years, two candidats will probably run for president and be above 70.

    D. Trump will be 74
    B. Sanders will be 79

By the way, I don't consider it's fine to discriminate against people, but starting an age, it's not only about back pain, and your brain start to age aswell. I don't mean that all old people are stupid or something else, by the way we could argue that some old people are much smarter and wiser than younger people.
However, the more we age, the more the risk of dementia, alzheimer appear. People who took care of old people could confirm that one of the first warning sign of dementia could be an increased agressivity before the dementia is diagnosed.
Furthermore, starting an age, there is an increased risk of an invalidating stroke.

I don't consider that the argument that old people are out of touch of some societial evolutions is valid. Some old people manage to keep in touch, and it's also because they don't care of some trends that some old people are wiser.

Would you agree to put an age limit to be president ?

It's not a debate about Mr Trump or Mr Sanders themselves. If you want to scream your hatred of one or another, find another thread.

Or they could simply be calcified in ignorance and stuck in 1960s.

There are LOTS of reasons old people shouldn't be president.

We already have systems in place. We have a very long primary and general election full of debates, and opportunities to judge the mental acuity of our nominee. The process is very physically demanding. You are on the road, you are up long hours, and you are on your feet for long periods of time with very few 'days off' the Presidential race is exhausting. Should you end up ill or debilitated there is a vice president who can take over. If you want to pass a law requiring annual physicals including a test for alzheimers, then I am fine.

The moment you put an age limit on any of this you lose me. The voters are the people who get to decide how important age is, and how worried they are about a specific candidate. It has become a campaign issue before, and will again and that is the way we really protect everyone. You don't protect us by denying us access to candidates based on their age, gender, race or religion. No thanks.

Right, you can't run for President until you are 35 according to the Constitution.

That's not about if you hate old people or not, if you hate old people, it's your own problem, but if they're able or not.

It's not during the primary that the problem exist, it's during a mandate. If someone during his presidency has a stroke or start to have dementia. That can cause heavy problems.

well I will support a law obliging yearly physicals alongside testing for symptoms of dementia with the results made public record, as long as both Pete buttigieg and Joe Biden are covered under the statute. Stuff happens. Presidents get sick, get shot, and disabled, have surgery during their time in office, yet our republic somehow manages to work through these problems. I will not presume to tell voters they cannot vote for the candidate they want, because other people that age sometimes get ill or lose their mental acuity.

Voters are best able to decide if a candidate is mature enough, smart enough and capable of being President, without being told it just can't be so, because that candidate is 34 years old instead of 35. Our system presupposes that voters are good at making these calls. I say let them.

If the 22 year old can convince sufficient number of voters throughout 50 states, that he or she is better able to run the office than their opponent of 55, there may be damn good reasons to think that true. The same is true with the 92 year old. Voters are not stupid. They see the increased risks of going real young or old for their leader. Those questions will be asked and debated as part of the process. Your 22 year old and 92 year old will have their work cut out for them, they will have to be very convincing. If they are... well they may just be right!

Biden turns 77 in less than a month, and we can see the senility and dementia starting to manifest pretty much anytime he opens his mouth.

I'd like to see the age limit be 65 on the day of inauguration...

The 'we' includes voters. Either have confidence that they will pick well, or ditch the whole process and rip up the ballots.

there's as many reasons why youth shouldn't be 'in charge' either.

that said, we've always looked to our elders for guidance... alas, they could've been senile.

i'd be more concerned with 'lifetime' appointees such as scotus, power & energy, agriculture, et al...

You forgot JOE BIDEN, who is 76 years old right now! And 'Dizzy Lizzy' Warren, the 'front-runner', who hit 70 this year (in June).

I hear all this stuff about how people are more physically resilient now than they were decades ago, and in some ways that may be true for a lot of the "Baby Boomers", who have become known for taking better care of themselves. I did vote "yes", that those over 70 should be able to run for the presidency, but, I think it would be better overall if people were between 50 and 70 when they hold a position of such incredible authority and sheer power! The stress alone must be unimaginable!

That said, in other countries, the age of SEVENTY, is a hard-and-fast retirement age for some positions. Example: In both Great Britain and Germany all judges must (MUST) retire at age seventy!

I'm a retired, older Baby Boomer. We aren't all physical "basket-cases", and in some ways I think your mind clears considerably when you are freed from the everyday-bullshit of having to work all the time. But, in truth, I'm not as physically strong as I was when I was 40, and I doubt that few people are....

And a president? That is surely a situation of "everyday-bullshit" and "having to work all the time".... :oldman:

I think that is a question for the voters.
There was a time when many didn’t figure Blacks or women could do the job. As far as age, I know people over 70 with better physical stamina, wisdom, experience and mental acuity than people half their age.
But, I am a bit biased, I am in my late 60’s, cycle 40-65 miles four times a week weather permitting (more miles than I drive) and few of my younger acquaintances can keep up, I feel better physically than I did when I was 30-40. While I am retired, I spend much of my time doing original scientific research into topics I didn’t have time to do when I worked for other interests. Could I do the job? Perhaps, but I long ago decided against a political career because of the requirements for knee bending, deception, and poly-speak ran against my inner moral compass.

No, they also shouldn’t be allowed to vote.
They do not have to live with the consequences of their actions.

    Also yearly driving tests.

I think no age limit. For one, as much as I think Joe Biden is a good man I also think he's loosing it. I'm 85 and am more confident in my speaking than Joe is in his. I think it should be up to the voters to determine if an individual is or isn't displaying 'unusual' signs of aging.

I think he might have been a good guy at one time, but no one working around Hillary Clinton remains a good person. Now that Clinton is no longer influential he may be reverting back. The whole bad apple spoiling the bunch thing
