I attended a boarding school for two years of high school. Half a day of classes then half a day of work. You could work half the night too if you wanted to or needed the money. I do not know of a single person I knew there that isn’t a successful net contributor to society and the economy. In fact, even though all but a couple of my graduating class were from lower middle class to poverty homes, all are middle to upper class economically now. About 25% were millionaires by age 40-45.

Learning to work young is invaluable.

I do not think we should defund public schools

And as I said the cost after the pilot programs which as bad as they might be will be tauted as the greatest thing that ever happened in our school systems and must be expanded. And oh by the way because it's federal money we get to dictate to you how you will use it and run the program. We see it time and time again when that camel gets its nose under the tent.

"The legislation would establish a pilot program that gives 500 schools, which serve mainly low-income families, five-year grants of up to $5 million, along with $1.3 billion for summer programming."
There are over 130,000 schools, run the numbers and tell me where the money will come from.

Education is NOT a federal function it is a State and local function. Harris needs to worry about FEDERAL responsibilities instead of trying to buy votes with huge federal spending programs that amount to nothing. Maybe she could introduce a bill to end funding for HeadStart which even by the governments own extensive study has proven to be a total waste of money.

Which raises another question, what if not enough teachers "volunteer" for the program in a school district, what then?

I think kids should be in school for an 8 hour work day but their work should be done, no homework and the kids need to be getting an actual education.

I have read that something like 40% of professional lineman (who seldom get concussions) have brain damage. For players that frequently get knocked out the percentage is higher. This makes me think it is probably a good time to phase out football in schools.

Not free. Guess you missed the part about work. My wife attended four years. Paid her full tuition. School wrote her a check after graduation for what they owed her. There were some scholarships as well. But work was required no matter the financial situation of the parents.

No. Soccer seems like a good sport for kids, i.e., good cardio exercise and is not size dependent like football. I am all for sports in schools. Just not football.

Two of my girls got concussions playing soccer.

"Soccer has the highest rate of concussions among female athletes compared to any sport. In fact, concussions now account for more injuries in girls’ soccer than boys’ football."

    https://completeconcussions.com/2017/06/05/5-truths-concussions-soccer/

Soccer is just more politically correct right now than football.

Thanks for posting that link. I had no idea that soccer had this level of head injuries.

Sadly for you, Congress long ago decided that there was a national interest in its soldiers, its civil servants, its voters, and its citizens having a basic education whether states wanted to provide one or not. The constitution permits Congress to make its own decisions with respect to what was required for it to promote the general welfare and it is not constrained by what you think should be the exclusive purview of the states and I can quote you several court decisions that support the right of Congress to levy taxes that provide monies to states for education.

Here is what you wrote about this bill in the OP.
" Does this intellectually challenged person not realize that the federal government does not control local schools? That all these hundreds and hundreds of school systems have their own contracts with employees that dictate hours? That there is no mechanism to enforce such a mandate on something which constitutionally and statorially she does not control from her little office on Capital Hill.
How do people who are totally clueless about thhe government get elected to make the laws"

You never referenced this bill as involving pilot programs in your op, until I dragged your ass to that conclusion. We know how many schools there are in the US. So does Harris . This bill refers to exactly 500 of them and provides a limit of 500,000 a most per grant. You can stop pretending you caught that little detail until I pointed that out too.

Instead you referenced a federal 'mandate', when no such mandate existed in the bill whatsover. No district is obliged to apply, so there is no mandate. There is no control imposed on any school or district that does not want this cash. This legislation provides an offer for funding for those school districts that want the help in the form of a grant.

Or maybe you knew, but were intentionally deceptive in your OP to mention those little details . If I were you, I'd go with lazy and sloppy reading over disingenuous or dishonest myself.

lol.... my 17 y/o son came home yesterday and had heard of this, his answer was, "oh, hell no!". He said many of the kids were buzzing about it and pissed off.

Soon... soon the kids will learn about the Authoritarianism of the Leftists.

Yeah I wouldn't mind seeing them start to wear some kind of head gear. Saw a little league baseball game the other day and all the fielders were wearing batting helmets.
