Hoosier8 check out https://homedistiller.org/forum/ lots of American's on this site forgot to pay attention to legality From what I read the vast majority of states just do not give a crap for home distillers still no reason to be stupid either. Given every other house is a dope grow these days you should be fine lol. The Mile Hi stills are works of art but expensive I'm very happy with the quality the sort of thing that will last a lifetime no problems.
Distilling booze isn’t a state issue, it’s a federal one. While you are probably correct in saying nobody cares if you have a personal set up going, it is still illegal. License to make enthanol for motor fuel is easy to get from what I understand.
Also everyone just ignores it lol, the guy who makes the still's has the license for fuel and you can see him in one of his videos actually tasting his "Fuel" I know a couple of the southern states where distilling has more history have been considering decriminalising and in actual policing have actually done basically that. Distilling in a New York apartment might be a different matter. If you get caught claim you're 1/32nd redneck and that it's a cultural thing .
You can only get a license to make alcohol in most states depending on state law if you distill it for fuel if you have the Federal Fuel Alcohol Permit. A Federal Distilled Spirits Permit is expensive and hard to get and only the large producers acquire that. If you have a still that is over 1 gallon and decide to distill alcohol you have to register the still with the federal government. That is the same in every state because it is a federal law. Depending on the state, you can own a still of any size if you don't distill with it. Some states ban even that. You can get an artisan distillery permit in Indiana if you intend to produce it to sell but cannot sell more than 10,000 gallons in a year. Other than that, without one of those permits it is illegal make your own alcohol at home in Indiana. Period. People do, but with the old saying, don't tell or sell.
I liked Canadian club, and if I was short on cash, Canadian mist. Drank myself into a stupor for too many years. Now I have been sober for 16 years.
Something that a lot of people may not be aware of, there is still a federal law that technically makes it illegal, a remnant from prohibition days. Technically you still have to register your liquor still ( "still" meaning distillator ), just like you would have to register a machine gun. Just another example of how less freedoms exist than people often think.
Jim Beam is a good go to for me. Not top shelf, and not *gag* bottom shelf that leaves me hoping for death the next morning, but just right. Good stuff at a good price. Got a good size bottle last night for $15. Called itself unfiltered. 86 Proof. Dang near finished it with my brother inlaw.
spade & bushel. irish stuff, strong but good, needs a drop of water. wife likes jim beam cider infused, it's a great shot taker cant touch jack, got sick on it in my teens, 30 years later I still hate the smell otherwise, if drinking to get drunk o, still prefer tequila, gin
As a natural born American, having been raised in Ireland, I can accurately be accused of bias; my guilty whiskey pleasure (no longer inexpensive) is Midleton Irish Whiskey. Irish Whiskey’s (uisce beatha...water of Life) are usually distilled three times, and are often single Pot, are Irish tested. One glass of Midleton, the old Irish version of heroine, and you will be hooked.
Curious to try some Pappy's. Best Ky Bourbon I've had is Blanton's. Texas seems to think it has game in the whisky business, but it don't. A bottle of Buffalo Trace will whip the ass of any Balcones. Stuff isn't even aged a year. Still tastes of yeast ffs. My goto is Glenlivet 12 though for the most part, on the rocks. Seriously, for the price this stuff is better than Makers, Jim Beam, Jack Daniels - maybe even Woodford Reserve. This stuff is pretty good too,
Scotch. I drink enough that I'd break the bank with 'the good stuff', I've found Buchannans Deluxe to be the best taste for the money.
McCallum Whisky can get quite expensive https://www.htfw.com/macallan-anniversary-malt-1928-50-year-old About 20 years or so ago one New Year's eve, I had too much Glenfiddich single malt and felt as though I died. Never touched Whisky since.
My wild Scottish rose of a wife claims some family heritage close to the 16 men of Tain, so I grew a real fondness for anything Glemorangie a while ago. Particularly the Quinta Ruben, which I'm currently sipping. At about $50/bottle it makes a great gift suggestion for the kids (heck, I'm almost 63. I buy what I want. Don't waste your money kids) and I usually get at least two bottles a year. Other than that, my favorite booze is anything free.
I'm more of a beer drinker but once in a blue moon a friend will offer a shot and it's impolite to turn it down. I had a shout of coffee flavored rye the other day. And I sat there and sip it slowly not just slam it down. Damn did every drop burn
Oh look, a thread I last commented on 4 years ago. I retract my previous comment about Buchanans Deluxe, which is not very good (anymore). Aberlour is my favorite scotch, but Johnny Walker Red is good enough for the price.
