    My fellow bloggers,

My beloved Commonwealth of Virginia is about to become the new front line of gun control. The Democratic party has taken control of both houses of the Virginia General Assembly. The party has not held total power in the Virginia General Assembly for nearly 30 years, and the current mood of the party is that it wishes to make up for lost time. This comes on the heels of a high profile mass shooting in Virginia Beach that the Governor used to push for more gun regulation last summer. Many gun restriction bills were put forward last summer but have been delayed until the new legislative session which begins in January. Now that the Governor’s party controls both chambers of the legislature as well as the governor’s mansion, you may certainly expect a flood of gun regulations....

Meeting with reporters afterward, Northam said he would support eight “common-sense” bills he proposed for the special legislative session he convened in July, after the May 31 mass shooting in Virginia Beach. Republicans who controlled the General Assembly shut down that session after 90 minutes, sending all the bills to the crime commission and promising to reconvene after the election.

He mentioned universal background checks, banning the sale of military-style weapons and high-capacity magazines, restoring the law that limits purchases to one gun a month, and a “red flag” law that would empower a court to temporarily remove a gun from a person deemed to be a risk to himself or others.

“We will at least start with those,” he said.

Asked if he supported confiscating military-style weapons from gun owners, Northam demurred.

“That’s something I’m working [on] with our secretary of public safety,” Northam said.

“I’ll work with the gun-violence activists, and we’ll work through that. I don’t have a definitive plan today.”

Although the legislature does not convene until January, General Assembly members can “pre-file” bills they wish to be considered as early as November 18, 2019. I would expect to see most, if not all, new gun control proposals filed before the legislative session starts. From then until the 2020 session ends gun control will be a red-hot topic. The Democrats have the votes to pass whatever they want for the next two years if they don’t break ranks.

Virginia now finds itself in the national spotlight on gun control.

Sadly, you're in the 4th circuit, which means whatever bans they cook up will stand.

Perhaps all peaceful, non-violent options and course of actions have been exhausted at this point. Perhaps there is no longer any other course of action to take other than the alternative.

How times have changed in Virginia; an article in the May 2, 1833 edition of The Virginia Free Press and Farmers' Repository says:

“Some one has justly remarked, that ‘eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.’ Let the sentinels on the watch-tower sleep not, and slumber not.”

An oft repeated sentiment as valid in current times as it was 200 years ago, one that should be coupled with Franklin’s observation,

Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.”

I wonder how many law enforcement officers the Democrats are willing to sacrifice in their efforts to confiscate 'assault weapons'.

soon only criminals and the elite will have weapons, the latter being the most likely to use them against the gen-pop...

Gun control advocates can be divided into two camps... the Polyanna’s that believe that people will see the light and simply surrender their weapons for the greater good and stop committing crimes and those that expect other, men with guns, will disarm the population with overwhelming force... justifiably (for the Ends) sacrificing multiple Constitutionally protected rights as required.

I've got no problem with any of those other than the possible confiscation. That one goes too far. Personally I think that banning the sale of assault style weapons is pretty dumb, but there's nothing that I can do with an assault style weapon that I can't do with any other semi-automatic long gun.

Thus demonstrating why such a proposal is devoid of any legitimacy or merit, and that the proposal has absolutely nothing to do with so-called public safety.

Such is a matter of debate in and of itself.

More than likely the proposals will cause far more harm for the state of Virginia, when the public at large refuses to comply and essentially dares the government to force them to abide. The state of Virginia will be put in the precarious position of needing to do something, but not having the necessary resources to force compliance.

Wikipedia has 33,000 gun deaths in 2013. x 50 for the years of relevant purchasing power and concern would be 1,500,000. For the time being, I sympathize more with these Nazi scenarios where the troopers come to your town, and round up everyone, and that's over 50,000,000 deaths to Nazis. When's that one going to be?

Riiiight, but universal background checks, banning high capacity magazines, limiting gun purchases to one per month, and red flag laws are all proposals that probably do have merit and will probably impact the issue to at least some extent.

That's exactly the point. Since any semi-auto can do the same thing, if they ban "assault style" rifles there is nothing preventing them from banning other semi-autos.

None of the proposals hold any legitimate merit, as they are all premised on the notion that legal firearm owners are the ones who are going out and committing various violent crimes.

it's bogus on the outset, there is no legal definition of 'assault weapon', it will vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction... give an inch, they'll take a mile, guarranteed... next up a six shooter (revolver) will be deemed an 'assault weapon', then knives of all kinds, soon to be back to 'sticks & stones'...
the dem libs are clearly regressing & devolving the usa, which is their true goal, to disband the united states

You're forgetting the fact that more than half of gun deaths are suicides. I suspect that red flag laws alone would prevent some of those. Universal background checks would almost certainly keep at least a few guns out of the hands of people who might use them to commit a crime. Limiting the size of magazines probably wouldn't do much to begin with at there are already a lot of high capacity magazines out there, but, over time, they'd come off the street. Even criminals will have a hard time getting them eventually if they're not being manufactured for anything other than military use.

    "Probably"

It is impossible to demonstrate the necessity and efficacy of these restrictions on the right to keep and bear arms.

it's pure fantasy, somehow these libs think that the chinese, russians, italians, germans, isrealis, et al will magically stop manufacting 'assault weapons'... they wont, rest assured they'll proliferate the market with their wears, they'll make their way to mexico and then across our open border...
yep, only criminals will have guns & the elites, beware of both, fear the elites more so than the criminals...

Suicides will continue unabated, the method utilized will simply change. Such is not a worthwhile outcome to warrant the curtailing of constitutional rights that would be experienced as a result, all in the hopes that it may potentially save lives.

It has not been working in the state of California, which the ATF has proven conclusively with available trace data. All firearm sales require a background check, all firearms are registered, all firearm owners require a permit, and yet half of all firearms found in the possession of criminal individuals were originally sold within the state of California to begin with.

Currently in the united states, there is absolutely no legal avenue for one to go about procuring heroin or other similar substances. Yet despite such, the trade in heroin and other illicit narcotic substances is thriving. How is such possible?

My hope with this thread is to have a substantive discussion. We can discuss generally the wisdom (or lack thereof) of these proposals we are about to see.

We can look at the evidence, if any, that would be produced before the committees in support or opposition of these bills. For example, in the summer special legislative session alleged expert opinion was offered to claim evidence exists that universal background checks have a positive impact on gun violence rates, while there is no evidence that an assault weapons ban has any impact on overall gun violence rates (yet there was a separate claim that an assault weapons ban had a positive impact on the number of mass shootings). I’m nether supporting nor denying the accuracy of these claims. I’m only offering these as examples to show the kinds of things these legislators want to cite to when they support what they already want to do. This legislative session will give you a chance to see what they claim and weigh the strength of their “evidence”—whether for or against a bill.

Finally, we can actually look at specific language in these bills. Anyone can access the bills online, and I can post the specific language for us to look at. The devil is always in the details, and once written the words will say what they mean and mean what they say. The importance here is any successfully passed gun control legislation will likely become a blueprint for use in other states or even nationally.
