The idea of free college isn't the same as open access to college. That's like saying everyone can get into Wonka's chocolate factory for free, when the sign clearly says you need a golden ticket.

That being said I'm sure democrats want to expand it to make it so both apply. I would certainly like to see my college tuition be free.

heh if we can add 1.2 trill now, why aren't you screaming about that. Yeah, I think public colleges should be free, just like high school. And I want them to fix the water in flint too.

Here's an idea. Instead of "Free" college for all...how about "free information for all"?

Make a website with the idea that Wikipedia basically wanted. No, don't allow anyone to alter it willy nilly. But basically set up a website that has all the text books and published articles of experts available for free to everyone? For each subject there is a test that you have to complete in order to pass. Once you pass all the tests and curriculum required to get a degree in something you get the appropriate degree (masters, bachelors etc etc).

Granted, this will probably KILL colleges and universities. But those professors can always get hired on by the government to give one on one tutelage if someone asks for it or its needed due to the subject.

And once the website is set up the only cost is maintenance of the server and people to input the information in and take old information that is no longer valid out. Websites are cheap.

Colleges are already starting to do this type of thing. But they still charge an arm and a leg.

Note: This is just a basic outline for an idea, a suggestion. Don't ask me for specifics as I'm no expert.

We need to make it so that people do not need to go to college. At this rate you are going to need a doctorate in how to yell, "GHAR!" when charging a training dummy in the USMC. People should be moving away from brick and mortar schools. Get a job, follow it up with online part time classes to get certs and licenses. Otherwise, our kids will leave this paradigm old, broke, and into a lousy failing economy.

I wouldn't trade classroom instruction for online crap. Besides, modern technology calls for more higher education, not less, and college and university provide personal enrichment and education far beyond mere occuapational training that are in themselves worthwhile. If anything, we need more higher education that lasts longer, not less. With knowledge increasing constantly, and at a pretty good rate, more education is called for. It is also a great way to mingle with a variety of people from different places and cultures, and a wonderful way to travel abroad also. I doubt I ever would have gotten to visit Germany and Ukraine had it not been for the last university I attended.

ny doesn't have free college, it is only free to illegal immigrants & beginning jan 2020, cuomo is forcing nys dmv to issue stated driver's id's to every illegal that wants one... oh, btw, on the application is a lil box that says 'register me to vote', all they need do is check that box and their names get added to the voter scrolls... yes this is happening folks, motor voter fraud comes to ny... i digress, as for the educational (indoctrination) system, liberals have fully devalued it, soon all college degrees will be meaningless (most already are)...

You're wrong that New York doesn't have free college. New York has a tuition-free scholarship.

Why not just go to college like people for over 200 years have in this country. You go to college to make more money. Use that extra money to pay it off quickly and be done with why should Joe the plumber pay for it?

Because there are FAR more people today than there were 200 years ago (max of 1 billion world wide vs today's 7 billion world wide....In the US alone around 9 million 200 years ago... today, 300+ million). Because we are FAR more advanced today than we were 200 years ago meaning that more education is required than what was needed 200 years ago. And (for my suggestion) because we don't have enough institutions/teachers/professors to educate 300 million people the old fashioned way.

And an educated populace is better for our country than a populace that is dumb. Knowledge is Power. And the more knowledgeable someone is the less likely people will be able to pull the wool over their eyes....something politicians love to do.

What does the number of people have to do with anything. People get paid more too. I've read NOTHING about a shortage of professors or colleges or seats in classrooms but what does that have to do with whether the person receiving the benefit of the education and the higher earnings and Joe the plumber paying for it? An educated populace as in the k-12 education is what we afford people and then we pay taxes to maintain that system from which someone can live a very nice standard on living. You want to go on to advance degrees to make more money then pay for it with those higher earnings. Why should Joe the plumber pay for the law degree of the lawyer who lives up on the hill in that fancy house and drives those fancy cars because he makes so much more money?

It's a wealth transfer, paying for millions of kids to learn garbage, preparing them for nothing, while the colleges get rich on taxpayer dollars

And a lot of this make it free bs is happening while many are starting to learn that it is not worth it. We're doing what happens with too many companies in the corporate crony environment. We're propping up an industry people should already understand should be culled.

Do you want an educated populace equally as much as possible? Or do you want just a few others with more knowledge to make decisions for those with less and number far more?

    Irrelevant.

Why do you think even colleges only accept X number of people ever year? It isn't for lack of applicants you know.

Joe the plumber will benefit the same as everyone else. More knowledgeable people means more ideas which in turn means something may come along and make Joe the Plumbers life much easier. That's how the US advanced the world far quicker than any other country in time, in a far shorter time span than any other country in time.

You do know that k-12 was instituted at a time when most people couldn't even read? Couldn't even pass a 1st grade test? The founders got schooling, k-12, going because they knew the same thing that I do. The better educated a populace was, the more productive they were, the better the economy, the better everyone's lives would be. They also understood that authoritarians and dictators like..no...love an uneducated population. So they set out to prevent that and improve everyone's lives.

And if Joe the Plumber wants to he could do the same thing....btw....did you know Joe the Plumber took advanced learning to learn his skill also?

K-12 is no longer enough in this day and age to get out of poverty. You need "advanced" skills to do so. You want to reduce the poverty problem in the US? Give people more education to do so. In the end it will improve your life also. This is proven in our society all around us. We went from a fledgling country with barely any educated people beyond just making an "X" as a signature to one of the most advanced countries in the world. You think this happened in the short amount of time it did for no reason?

Besides, what would you rather you have the government spend the money it gets from Joe the Plumber on? Wars or education? Making new laws that most people will never understand because its all in legalese or education that prevents them from taking advantage of ignorant people like countries that are dictators?

Look beyond money for once and look at the advantages. Besides, my proposal would actually cost less to the American people than what is currently in place and most everyone finds acceptable.

So who gets left out? The lazy and the rich??? I guess the point that not everyone makes the scholarship shows that New York isn't going wrong with its free education.

That also shows why I didn't agree with the OP that we should use information from the 1990s to judge the current day standards of free college.

Seems we've had a higher educated populace without taxpayer paid college or are you claiming different?

    Salient point

Prove there are enough spaces in colleges for the persons who want to attend.

And more plumbers mean better health conditions in our country and the US advanced the world far quicker that any of those other countries who provide free college and in a shorter time span.

Did you even read the OP about how free college for all has already been proven a failed policy?

Actually that sounds more like to day than 100 years ago.

He choose to be a plumber, count your blessings people still do choose such jobs these days. He probably apprentice, paid his own way. The person going to college will earn about 30% more than he, they can use that 30% to pay for their college.

False on it's face. I for one have no college degree and probably in the top 25% of earners and have a nest egg only the top 10% could claim.

    False choice.

If you think government funded college for all will cost less I got a bridge to sell you. Why do you think college tuitions are so high now? We keep pouring money into it by various means.

Student: Wow college cost so much
Government: oh well here is some more money
College: hey more money coming in raise tuition rates
Student: Wow college cost so much

I've done both and online is far superior to brick and mortar. It isn't even close. And in the trades, you are never done learning. Ever. This leaves you with two major options; stay in brick and mortar schools forever or get to work. Take part time classes. I've even taken continuing education classes in brick and mortar schools while working. I was in one 3 month class and it was very important to me but it didn't put my life on hold as today's broken system does. As for the social experiences you reference, I had those in the USAF where I learned to work on high tech. I was stationed in Germany, 6 months in Spain, visited Paris, Amsterdam and Austria over seas. In the US, basic in Texas, training in Mississippi, 18 months California. There are many civilian occupations that include travel too.

"Those that can do....those that can't teach" Those words make more and more sense to me years after my father said them to me He was a successful bushiness owner that he built with his brother after they returned from WWII. My Dad was asked to speak often in College business classes in my home town. He was proud to share his work ethics and business practices with young aspiring students until he came to the realization his experiences were not only being held up to ridicule by left leaning professors, but that he was mocked in his absence by them.

Education needs to depend much more on wise experience veterans of life's experiences. Instead we rely on a 'professional educator elite" that has little experience outside their little clique of snobbish, holier than thou, Marx influenced dictators!

Can you imagine if it became policy that no Federal position could require a college degree? Maybe the states and private sector would follow suit. You would see college attendance and pricing collapse without government support. And as people start finding out college isn't worth it, that is what is happening. The government support I mean.
