Iran has no real card to play. If they do that, good bye Bandar-Abbas, Good bye tankers, good bye oil production. etc etc. The smart thing for Iran to do is pull back form the table and call it day. Because they will not win.

 

CVNs aren't just a reg. ship. Yeaaaa 5,000 American sailors gone plus a capital ship..... it's going to be a nuclear weapon. It be a proprietorial response. Or at mim. a massive carpet bombing of Tehran. Either way Tehran is going to be whipped off the face of the Earth.

 

Also, I don't think you understand how massive CNVs are. They also never, ever go out alone. They're are other ships that go with them. So in other to "break the keel" you have to hit it with a nuke. You could put 50 torpedoes in that thing and it still keep going. Now as far as missiles from go fast boats, shore batt. or aircraft, That is if you're able to get close enough. CVN's are on the move, that means you have to have ISR on them all the time. In one hour the AOR has opened up to 200sq miles. So good luck hitting it w/o current ISR.

 

Just so you know ..vetetsnd today swore we were in a battle with ETs in the pacific a few years ago. They are known for that kind of reporting.

Attacking an aircraft carrier would be an act even the easy going trump could not ignore . I understand you think the US military is a paper tiger but you have never seen the US wage war as she did in ww2 not limited by political rules of engagement.

The only way to really do that is with underwater mines, provided the conditions and the environment are conducive to it. The Persian Gulf would not fall into that category.

Iraq tried that in 1991, when the USS Tripoli detonated an influence mine in the Persian Gulf. While damage was extensive it wasn't close to sinking.

Iraq had, and presumably still has, a large stash of the Russian UDM influence mines which is what was used in that attack. The problem for anyone in that region wishing to use them to sink an aircraft carrier is that the Persian Gulf isn't deep enough, the UDM isn't powerful enough, and an aircraft carrier isn't small enough to result in a fractured keel.

A Russian LUGM, which Iraq also has, likewise lacks the power to sink an American carrier. About an hour after the Tripoli set off that UDM, The USS Princeton hit a LUGM which broke free of its underwater mooring. Damage was significant, but the ship was a long way from sinking...
