Appreciate it, that was 26 years ago, wasn't any fun as I was the one who signed the DNR, my mom was never going to recover and we had a pact that neither of us would allow any family member be kept alive in a vegetative state.

It did however get me very involved in the justice system and personal self defense

I do have to laugh a little, as I remember the story of Col. Rex Applegate. He had served with the precursor to the CIA, the OSS, at the outset of World War II and had been assigned to develop a close combat fighting system that would be effective, efficient, easy to teach and learn, and make the trainee effective with both armed and unarmed combat, and knowledgeable in fighting with many different dedicated and improvised weapons. He was a combat veteran and storied instructor, whose 1943 book "Kill Or Be Killed" is still considered one of the best resources on fighting techniques out there.

Near the end of his life he was a highly sought-after and well-traveled speaker and lecturer. There was one time when he was lecturing at a seminar in a large city, and after dinner one night he decided to take a quick walk to enjoy some fresh air and get some exercise before he retired for the evening. He was 80 years old, and walked with a cane. All the group of miscreants saw was an elderly man with a cane...and five would-be street toughs ended up in the hospital with assorted contusions and broken bones!

I take an odd amount of satisfaction in that tale, and one of the reasons I continue to train as hard as I do is because I hope to be that tough and capable at 80 years of age!

That's a position that is never easy to be in. I was in a similar situation with my mom; though with her it was a heart attack and stroke that we were dealing with, not a criminal assault. Nevertheless incredibly painful; my mom was a tough and no-nonsense, but also incredibly kind and compassionate woman and I thought the world of her.

The fellow that trained me in Belfast was trained by Applegate in WWII. Aside from various techniques, one major thing he taught me, himself learned from Applegate, was commitment to attack in defense.

Exactly so! It is awesome you were able to train with someone like that!

She'd be more effective with a firearm.

    Apparently 95% of Americans disagree.

A percentage arrived at with zero factual verification, of course.

Fortunately, I have the ability to think for myself. Just because 95% of Americans are wrong doesn't obligate me to join them in their silliness.

See now, that's just the thing. Who's thinking more for himself? The guy who carries every day, or the guy who doesn't? Because it seems to me that the guy who carries is owned.

How so? When I carry, I hardly think of it.

Presumably, you stated that 98% of Americans (or people) do not think you can defend yourself better with a firearm.

Let's look at it this way: I've carried a gun personally and professionally for nearly 3 decades now. It inconveniences me not a bit... and doing so saved my life. That said....

Let's say you just have two guys: one who carries and one who doesn't.

The guy who carries might carry a gun every day of his life, his entire life, and never need it; just as the guy who doesn't carry might go his whole life without ever needing to think about defending himself.

    BUT...

If the guy who carries never needs his gun, what has he given up? Nothing.

If the guy who never carries gets murdered, what has he given up? His very life.

    So much for being "owned".

Maybe we should make it illegal to not use your gun if the opportunity presents itself...

But seriously, 'what if someone carrying a gun doesn't use it?' isn't an argument anyone poses for or against anything. Folks that may have decided to stay out of it have no bearing on the discussion. If the caveat 'Armed citizens successful 94% of the time when they engage...' was added to OP, would it make any difference to the findings other than making it more difficult for you to find something to gripe about?

Or put another way, can you tell me the difference in an active shooter scenario between someone who has a gun but doesnt use it and someone who doesnt have a gun?

For myself when I carry I go to extremes not to get into situations that could product violent. In fact far more then when I am not carrying.

Unfortunately, whether intended or not on the part of the recipient, violence has a way of tracking down and finding everyone equally.

Sorry there are all manner of times when a citizen can get into a heated argument with another citizens for tiny an unimportant reasons. Sadly a few of those times had resulted in violent.

My favorite example was when I was ready to park my car in a very busy parking lot when another driver who was way behind me got his girlfriend to jump out of his car an run to the parking space.

I got out a large books an told them I would read the book cover to cover slowly before I would move my car away from the space in question

Now this was a dumb move on my part over a damn parking space but at least on that day I did not have a firearm with me to defend myself if "need be".

Below is an example of what I was talking about.
