Why do the Democrats need a perfect, walk-on-water, candidate when the Republicans pulled a booger out of their nose, stuck a red cap on, it and called it President.?
Because that "booger" is so far superior to any candidates the democrats can find that they look like jackasses trying to hump flagpoles by comparison.

I’m of the opinion the electorate is lazy and looking for someone else to do their work therefore create messiahs. The conundrum for the Democrats is over-thinking the situation this cycle. The goal is a candidate that can bring the different factions of the party together. An energic party wins this election. Currently they’re worried about the wrong stuff but no, they don’t need a “perfect” candidate to beat a candidate constrained by a smaller shrinking base. They only thing to fear is fear itself and today that is the conventional talkinghead media wisdom: playing it safe.
The Democrats have a number of qualified candidates and to list a few - Klobuchar, Buttigieg, Biden, possibly Bloomberg. Any of these would beat Trump in a debate and in a general election. I tend to discount Warren and Sanders as to far left for most voters. Klobuchar is a successful, tough midwest (Minnesota) Senator that would look good on the top of the ticket. Except for his age, Buttigieg is tack sharp and never misses a beat, look like later for the top slot - but that's what they said about Obama. Biden? Probably the front runner unless Bloomberg takes a big bite out of his numbers. Either would destroy Trump. This is a tough lineup and Republicans that dismiss it are destined to defeat. What about the coasts? Biden and Bloomberg will lock up the coasts, Bloomberg for sure. These two have a lock on African-American voters, especially Biden. IMNSHO Biden and Klobuchar would lock up the election. Now the Democrats need to sort it out.
